My Quest for the "Bodyweight OHP"

I find that I get into a better position when I clean the bar, as opposed to unracking it.

First update: hit 155 today. Up from 150

Nice work.

Can anyone answer this question for me when they get a second? I want to work on my sticking point for the OHP by doing this. I should be able to put MORE weight because of the shorter ROM, correct?

Not necessarily- starting from a dead stop at your sticking point may make it harder. Everyone is different. Some people can generate better force out of the rack position than they can from pins.

When you say rack position, do you mean standard starting position?

I’ve got to agree with flapp, it’s a ā€œsticking pointā€ because you can’t get Max Force at that point. If the pins are at that spot, you shouldn’t be able to do more weight.

With the pins Above that spot, removing the sticking point, you should be able to lift more.

Got it.

But I SHOULD put it at my sticking point and hammer it, so I can push past it on my next attempt. Just with less weight, correct?

Try it out and kinda ā€œfeelā€ it. Different dudes use different approaches. I’ve seen lower weight for lots of reps from the sticking point.

Or moderate or ā€œpretty heavyā€ singles or low reps for the sticking point. And possibly one or 2 other positions.

Dan John said to load weights so heavy the bar will not move, at the sticking point, and push as hard as you can a few times.

If you want to get fancy you can set one pin a little below where you stick, press off that into a second pin where you stick and push for a few seconds. Josh Bryant and Thibadeau have more on that.

out of curiosity…what is your current best bench?

220 was my last PR for Bench. Its my weakest lift in terms of advancing. Stuck at trying for 225.

I did notice that I was doing my leg drive ALL wrong, and pushing up, instead of, back and towards the bar. I watched a video by Allan Thrall, and it helped, but I am still trying to figure it out exactly. The bar always stalls right where he says the leg drive should pick up. Stuck at about 3/4 of the way to lock out.

Its been about 3-4 weeks since I attempted bench PR.

Well if this makes you feel any better . Unlike some guys you might see, your OHP strength is on par with your Benching strength. Old rule of thumb you should be able to OHP 2/3 of what you bench. Since you fall into that range your OHP is not underdeveloped relative to your bench.

Forgot to ask. But what is your height?

5’11

and if I want to be petty 5’11 and 3/4

Who wouldn’t just say 6 ft. at that point?

Me and my dad are both that exact height. We just say 6’.

Id rather just say 5’11, than have someone measure me and argue with them.

I don’t care that much. Although it would be nice to say I’m 6 foot, I think I stopped caring a long time ago and just accepted reality. LOL

I’m 5’10ā€, so I really have no way to make myself appear to be 6 feet tall. Aside from wearing heels, that is.

I like saying I’m shorter, because then it makes my bodyweight seem more impressive.

I know. 5’10ā€ @ 170 sounds so much skinnier than 5’9ā€ at 170.
