wow bwg thats a huge compliment, esp coming from you!!
I HATE, repeat HATE front squats. I rarely do them, and if you do them regularly that makes you so freakin hardcore…I do them because god damn it makes you look like a badass, and it is rare that even guys do them in my gym. I have trained almost all my chicks to do them do, just for that reason…ever want to sack up you can do front squat bar placement lunges. THAT will get you some looks. Havent done em yet but Ive trained with them…
Oooh! Yeah my old training partner would do those (I believe they are prescribed in Max Strength by Eric Cressey… which she did for a while). I have done them a few times… but I only use a safety squat bar turned backwards for front squats and front squat placement lunges. Which makes me not as hardcore =( Still got insane looks though!
My FAVORITE front squat experience thus far was about 2 months ago when I was lifting in the same rack as this guy from my gym who thinks he is AWESOME! He was back squatting and I was front squatting. He was only using 10 lbs more than me, not squatting nearly as deep as me, and I was going for more reps. Ha! (plus he was grunting a lot… I mean, it was 175! Give me a BREAK!)
I like your grammar!
I’m mostly too much of a pussy for front squats. But now I’m inspired.
Also: how do you actually spot someone on a squat? (i.e. what do you do if they fail?) Spotting people stronger than me is terrifying because if they were to actually drop the thing, I couldn’t pick it up.
Note: When I spot or teach spot for females and they have considerable weight on there you can’t curl up the bar like he shows. In that case I stagger my feet so I’m stable and hook under their arms to the front of their shoulder/upper chest area to get them up out of the hole. The most important part of spotting is the prep work - make sure they’re in a rack and the safety bars are set to the right height!

molly i LOVE stories like that! but i have a question. did your friend do max strength or did she do Eric Cressey?
bwg- front squat lunges. now ya went n challenged me. ya know im gonna HAVE to try em, right?
Let me know how they go! If you are REALLY crazy, and SO old school hardcore, try “zercher squats!” in fact…i should tell deja about those, they will give her a different balance point with the bar and she’ll be able to get a better feel for going lower! ZERCHER SQUATS: - YouTube (i advise following their suggestion for using the easy bar for these…)
those are some sick zercher squats. absolutely sick. alas, my gym has an ez curl bar (go figure. 3, actually) but no “real” ez barbell like that one. another reason for sadface to my gym! ah well, it lets me do most stuff, including bang plates around on the floor. even if they dont understand why i wanna go for max effort triples. sheesh.
bobbi thanks for posting the spot video!
molly, keep ur gramatticlularness for the grownups, mkay?
alisa- im lucky that i havent had to spot anyone that completely bailed on a lift… everyone so far has been smart enough to acknowledge that they need help, and keep goin so i dont have to lift/curl/row the entire weight by myself. now that i went and said that, i should knock on some wood.

Leads me to believe there might have even been a small conversation about me…
Don’t mind my head in the clouds
less of a small conversation about you, more of a conversation about how small you are.
gymgirl, thanks!
Damn! Did the pics I posted on SAMA get spread around?! Must have been a huge douchebag who did that to me. But you know what they say, the camera really does take off 8 inches! You can ask stronghold.
