Muscle Preservation and Early Morning HIIT

I’m due for a cutting cycle and I understand that early morning HIIT is a great way to accelerate fat loss. However, I also understand that strenuous exercise and energy expenditure after an 8 hour fast can be very catabolic. Does anyone know about efficacy of taking in some protein without carbs or fat before training first thing in the morning? Will that help preserve muscle without inhibiting the fat loss?

Cheers.

John Berardi has addressed this before in one of his Appetite for Construction articles.

He said something about taking in a liquid protein and carb meal about 30-60 minutes before you perform your workout.

Or, you can take half a serving of Surge before and half after.

To tell you the truth, i was suprised to hear that Beradi recommended that. I thought having BCAA or straight whey isolate protein would be good eonugh to stop the catabolic state. I ocassionally use whey isolate shake and 1 TBS of virgin coconut oil which is mostly MCT that are immediately used for energy.
