Muscle Imbalance [CHEST]

Hi Guys,

I am trying to workout on dumbbells now to even out my chest as i have been using barbells for quite awhile now. I am right handed and as you guessed it my right arms and chest are a lil bigger than my left. I have no problems working each part (other body parts, shoulders, biceps, triceps) unilaterally but while working on the chest, I cant get the same feel on my chest using flat bench dumbbell presses. It seems that my triceps get tired first or I just dont get as much feel that my chest is getting a workout. It is a different story when I use barbell presses. I really try to maintain good form while using the dumbbells and retract my shoulder blades as well to get the chest more involved. Can you guys help me out?

Thanks,
ChoBo

Well I cant say I have the same prob but I will try and help.

I think you are doing it right by keeping good form. Stick with that.

You say you are not feeling it in the chest much. Could be do to lagging tri’s anyway. So, it wont hurt to get them up to par with your chest and will result in a better BB press in the future.

Couple options you have is to pre exhaust the pecks, or post exhaust them. I would lean toward POST so as to not be detrimental to the db presses.

In other words after you are done with all your work sets on the presses, do some isolation work on your pecs to finish them off. EX. db flys.

Hope this helps.

Phill.

Here’s another idea for a pec imbalance.

Try doing pushups with the right hand elevated up on a block or step. Make your left arm and left pec do all the work. Keep your right arm stationary; it’s just there for balance.

It will feel weird, but it could help give the left side the extra work it needs to bring it up to speed.

Phill, thanks man, gota try that pre-exhaust or post-exhaust method, i never thought of that. I will try that as well Shaw. Thanks a lot guys
