Muscle Growth Question

My younger brother would like to know do you have to be sore after every workout in order to grow/ gain muscle?

PPP’s Youner Brother

NO

Short answer: No.

Maybe someone else can post with a longer and more technical version, but I need my beauty sleep.

Wow, that’s a tought one. The answer, I think, is no. But, the why part is a little complicated. Throw “muscle soreness” into the search engine and see what you get. Also, check out these articles:

Hopefully this helps a little. I’m sure there is much more out there in the archives as well.

Maybe one of the Big Guns can chime in on this one when they get a chance.

If you mean “sore immediately following a workout” please read Ian King’s guidelines for justification.

If you mean DOMS it is still no: there is no relationship between DOMS and muscle growth.

i once posted the same question on another board. the reply? well, they said that soreness was a result of putting the muscle through excercises and routines it wasn’t used to, once you adapt you become less sore.

you should rather monitor your progress by keeping track of sets and reps (with weights). as long as they’re the way up, so is your size.

(a little crude, but i think you got the idea?)

TY small I appreciate it !
