Saw the call outs for the open and 212 finals. For the open I think Curry edges Hadi by a little bit. Depends what the judges are looking more for. I think Hadi had the shoulders and legs and his midsection is solid, however Curry’s chest looked better.
Edit: I have no judging experience this is just one novice’a unsolicited opinion.
Not many white guys at the Olympia this year. The ones that were there looked like they were black, because of how dark their fake tan/ melanotan is. The middle eastern guys were the lightest guys on stage.
Some argue he’s the best ever. I’m not knowledgeable on the sport enough to have a well informed opinion but listened to a podcast maybe a year or so ago and they were talking about that.
Said at the minimum he has multiple things that will never be broken.
The issue for Dexter in the GOAT discussion is he has won 1 Olympia when other guys have won 8. In particular, some of those guys have won Olympia’s against Dexter.
That’s always going to make it a tough argument, particularly when you have guys who only compete in the Olympia.
Hadi looked really good. He doesn’t have as small a waist as the others ahead of him. Same reason why Kai Greene never beat Phil Heath. Hell of an impressive physique nonetheless.
I felt like, and I’m sure I’m not the only one, that the ‘classic’ division realy was this years big category. I was just so much more impressed by the physiques and more interested in what was happening and who won than in the Open.
Part of that, for my part, is that the Open felt like it really lacked for depth in competition. Neither of two previous title holders were competing, and without Phil, Rhoden or Ramy competing you’re missing 3 of the top guys, last years top two and the top two from 2017.
Also the conditioning in the Open this year, with the exception of Hadi, just didn’t look up to par. I can’t help but feel like Curry wouldn’t have placed top 5 with the physique he brought this year in any of the previous Olympias this decade.
Classic on the other hand was super close fought and all of the top guys brought just insane conditioning by contrast.
To me classic was what bodybuilding should always have been about, but then i’ve never been a fan of the mass monster trend.
Personal Opinion, but I just don’t like Bonac’s shape - it’s probably a genetic thing he can’t help but Hadi and Curry definitely look more proportional to their respective bodies.
On a side note - did anyone else catch that they are bringing back the Ms. Olympia class starting next year?
Not really a surprising move given the number of female classes already. My guess was they were waiting to see what kind of crowd that “Wings of Strength” show gathered before they made a decision.
This is going to be interesting. Two things to consider:
1- They ended the class originally because no one really cared. No advertisers, didn’t sell the tickets and bring in the money like the other classes… never badmouthed or disrespected the athletes, but if the audience isn’t there…
2- Today’s Women’s Physique competitors look like the female “bodybuilders” of the past… so just how far in terms of size and conditioning are they expecting from the newly returned FBB class?
I think now the audience has come back - maybe due to social media bringing some “fringe” sports back to popularity or maybe because it has a circus side show feel to some (a “look at that freak” kind of mentality. I disagree with that view, but that may be some of the audience).
I agree, but looking at the “Wings of Strength” instagram page, it looks like their female BB athletes are a bit bigger than in the past. I am curious to see if it will draw enough attention next year for Olympia to keep it or if the division will be included at this Dwayne Johnson show they are promoting in Atlanta.
Turning the Olympia into an Expo and “fitness” weekend like the Arnold is probably the best thing they have done to drive audience/views up. Adding in Strongman, powerlifting, MMA, creates a bigger draw for sure.
Curry definitely more proportional, but Hadi has the waist of someone 50lbs heavier, and the forearms of someone 75lbs lighter. Far and away the best conditioning on stage, don’t get me wrong, but the waist is so important in flow between the biggest muscle groups. Forearms aren’t a game changer, just make his arms look odd.
