Well you and jsbrooks have given me some food for thought.
I may give a larger meal in the morning a try on my day off.
the most important thing about eating good before training is obvious…give yourself plenty of time to digest but not to long or you will loose the benefit of all that energy…it’s trail and error on timing
But see that is the thing. I am not getting my ass up 2-hours before the gym so I can have a king’s breakfast, then get to the gym, then get to work.
I work too many hours as it is, efficiency is a valuable thing to me.
I may try a little more of a meal and a small bit of lead time, but no way am I getting up at 3:00am and hanging around to let food digest before I go to the gym.

That will be my problem too when I start work this Monday. I’m going to be working a lot of hours. That’s why I think I’ll go with the Surge peri-workout. Then breakfast. Then leave for work. I’ll see how it goes.

I hear ya, everyone is differnt so they have different needs for what they are specifically doing in the morning. I know I hate to eat breakfast but I am trying to keep my muscle mass and loose BF at the same time.
Fasted Cardio? Is that cardio done fast or fasting while you do cardio? I used to get up in the morning and just drink a pot of coffee and then train like a madman, but I don’t think that was too smart either.
fasted meaning on an empty stomach.
I want to protect my muscle gains also which is why I down the BCAAs
Coffee is a good thing as is the Grow!, for me anyways, but I will give a heavier meal a try.[/quote]
Get some form of protein in ya so the BCAAs can do their thing, they really don’t do a whole lot without the protein
Just get on a good protein shake before you train and add your BCAA if it is in powder form

I do take some Grow! ;>
but it is a good reminder for me to keep an eye on my protein

I’ve always been a breakfast person and can’t function without one, but I’ve known people who’s stomachs just don’t let them eat that early, so you may be better off doing your thing. But I have found that waiting at least an hour made a huge difference in performance, so give that a try.
I know this is whiney and wussy, but I don’t like the thought of getting up an hour early to hang out and warm up! holey moley… that is 3:00am or 3:30am! I don’t know how Ronda does it

I don’t think that’s wussy, getting up a 3:00 am sucks! When I do have to get up earlier to get in a workout I use the extra hour to take care of chores around my apartment. Take the trash out, wash a few dishes. Basically get up and get active. I haven’t had to get up to train at 4:00 am in about 6 years though.

I can call you when I get to the gym if you want…you’ll have plenty of digestion time that way…and then more time afterwards for coffee on the beach.
i usually wake up 1 hour prior to working out.
in that time ill have a scoop of whey with my creatine.
then before i get into the gym ill have like a bananna.
after my workout i have my shake and banana with my creatine.
then i wont eat till atleast another 2 hours. sometimes i wait 3 because i just dont feel like eating.
anyways the meal after my post workout shake would usually be something solid like steak chicken or hamburger something along those lines.

awesome… sounds like I have found a solution
I do love coffee on the beach
BodyBldgBabe once told me she had a lamp that simulated artificial sunlight that would start dim and get progressively brighter being it’s brightest when the alarm went off. I’ve been thinking of trying to find a lamp like that.

so what is your workout like?
do you lift or are you doing cardio?
have you ever tried a heavier meal before a workout?
My work schedule dictates when I eat. Normally I work out a few hours after I wake so it’s a protein shake. On occasion I have to work out an hour after I get up. Then I resort to eating a jar of the desert type baby food.
Don’t laugh it’s quickly and easily digested and tastes pretty good. I’ll also mix a scoop of BCAA’s, creatine and glutamine in 24 oz. of Gatorade which I drink during my training.

I have used the baby food too…it’s digest almost immediately I sometimes use it during my work out if I feel I need a boost
I currently work in retail and my work schedule is all over the place. When I have the late shift and have to workout in the morning I do as follows.
Upon waking:
1/2 can of Spike Shooter
1 or 2 scoops of powdered Gatorade with 8-10 BCAA tabs.
about half hour later on my way to the gym (I live 10 minutes away) I start drinking my 1st serving of Surge. I’ll usually finish this after my 1st or 2nd movement for the day. Then PWO I’ll have my 2nd serving of Surge.
This is actually a plan that Berardi laid out in an article on here a long, long time ago that I somehow stumbled across. Anyway, I’m not the biggest (yet), but the scale and performance are moving in the right direction so its working for me.

I follow a body part split (2 muscles per day), 10-12 sets per muscle, most of them to failure in the 8-10 rep range. My workouts are intense, and I feel better without having much in my stomach. Spike tabs are a big help.
I’ve never tried a big meal before my workout because I need a big meal before I go to work. After my workout I shower and have a 1000 calorie smoothie as soon as my stomach can handle it. Then I’m out the door.
Early mornings are the best time for me to lift - I don’t care about my CNS getting warmed up or whatever. My energy levels are actally lower after work that at 5:30 in the morning. Plus I like to have all day to eat after lifting.
I am bumping this thread because of the new FA article which suggests the morning lift.
I am sure it takes some time to get used to it, I just want to know if anyone has recently made the switch.
I’ve been fighting off some serious energy drains due to anemia of all things, and I feel narcoleptic in the afternoon so I am thinking I may actually be more awake first thing in the morning.
So… had anyone made a recent switch or gone both ways?

Well, I have. Granted, I’m currently dieting, but I’ve gone from training in the late afternoon/evenings to training in the mornings due to class scheduling.
I’m actually really enjoying it. It helps me eat bigger earlier so I can minimize my caloric intake as the day goes on, it makes me feel better throughout the day, and definitely helps my metabolism get going in the morning.
I do Fasted Morning Cardio in the morning supplemented with BCAA and HOT-RX, and will generally do my lifting about 3 hours after said cardio. I’m enjoying it so much that when I bulk I plan on lifting first thing in the morning.

but when you say morning what do you mean morning? I wonder about those folks getting up at 3:30am, or 4:00am, or 4:30am so they can get the workout in and then go to work.
Did it take you a while to get used to the change?
Because I work and have a family, I work out early. I am up either at 4:30 or 5. To the gym by 5:30 or 6. I have BCAAs, a casein/whey protein shake with water and flax, half a bananna, creatine. Beta-7. I dropped Surge for now because I am dieting.
I sip on a Spike while driving there. (I heart Spike!)
I eat when I get home, before I head off to work.
Yes, at first it took some getting used to, but it is really good to know it’s done. I’ve been doing it for a few years now, and I think it works best for me.
Well I am going to give this a try. I will be getting up at 4:30am and sucking down some BCAAs and getting to the gym by 5:00am and doing my schedule until 5:45am
Now I am a chickie so that means I have hair to try and style and all that crap. I wish I looked good bald.
I start work when I get there so I try to get here as early as possible and am shooting for 7:30am.
