Happy Thanksgiving.
I look forward to seeing your vids. your lifting is very impressive.
A couple of them were quite exciting to make…for me, anyway. And thank you. “I am but an egg.”
Points if you can tell what book that’s from.
Ah, one more baby martian.
Like your new avatar, makes me think.
'scuse me, Love Machine. Overall, for squatting would you recommend Oly lifting shoes compared to Chucks?
Remember, arms in o-lifting are only for pulling/pushing your body under the bar. Try to keep them straight/relaxed until you hips and knees are done with their work. Its amazing how much quicker you are when you wait on the arm involvement. Other than that, your lifts looked pretty good. Good back position.

No, Chuck Taylors are better if you want to move loads of weight. I just use my oly shoes because it makes it harder for me to squat. I’m a bit off, you see…

Thanks Carl. Everything I’m doing correctly I learned from watching your vids.

these shoes are frenchie approved.
Really great work on the olympic lifts DCA.
You’re already handling an impressive amount of weight considering your technique. (Damn, that sounds like an insult but it’s actually supposed to be a compliment!!!)
And as your technique improves I’m sure your poundages will fly up. What with your vids and Carl’s I’m seriously considering having a go myself.

No offense taken. Carl said the same thing a while back the last time I took a run at the O-lifts. It’s actually encouraging to hear. I’m making the lifts a part of regular training and hope to get much better at them. I like the effects. My mid back is thickening up, I’m getting stronger hamstrings and traps and my hips feel great from all the lighter and deeper squatting. The frequent, lighter pulling seems to be helping my low back as well.
The technique is so nit-picky, a game of inches for me, that it should keep me interested for quite a while as I attempt to get it right.

You should. You have the flexibility. Those Oly lifts are really fun.
Warm up
Dislocates
Light squat cleans
Clean and Jerk
135x3,3
165x2,2
185 1x10 sets
Using the hook grip on these. Might as well get used to it. Didn’t hurt at all, as it turned out.
Pendlay Row
205 8x5
I listen to your vids to hear the sound of your place rattling when you drop the weights
You drop nice and low in the squat section. As I am totally untrained for this would you mind sharing your cues?

That’s an interesting question. I don’t really have any verbal cues. I try to connect a certain physical sensation with the correct movement I see in the videos, so it’s more kinesthetic than auditory. I don’t think in words while I’m lifting. I just try to replicate a chain of sensations throughout the lift. frinstance, I know my jerk is not right because it doesn’t feel solid. None of the jerks felt right except a couple of them, because they just settled into place with no effort.
I touch my shins to the bar at a certain place, set my shoulders and arch the back and get my butt to the right height. When that feels right I pull until the bar reaches a certain height and then I jump. It’s all by feel. No verbal commands are being barked in my head to hit the right spots. I still need a LOT of practice.
That’s probably not very helpful from a coaching/advice standpoint though.
Glenn Pendlay’s oly drill vids are very helpful in this respect. Have a look at the California Strength site.
oki cool.

skinamarinky dinky dink skinamarinky doo!!
they’re just not always GOOD words.
Hey DCA! A little frenchie told me you started Oly lifting so I wanted to check you out. And I can tell you’re already pretty advanced! Great stuff!
Good on you for learning the lifts via vids, I don’t think I could do that. But as I’ve just learned you’re 100% correct, its really about “feeling” the lift. As the coaches told me last night, you need three things for Oly lifting - flexibility, strength and some sort of kinesthetic sense. Looks like you’ve got them all! Well done sir.

Thanks, Mascherano. I was right about something? That’s such an unfamiliar feeling…

Haven’t done high bar squats in a coon’s age. They feel pretty good. I’m debating with myself pretty hard about going all in on Oly lifting. I sure want that 285 bench though. I’ll think about it some more.
