So… got back from the Doctor today… interesting news to say the least. Here is the recap from last time:
I have adrenal fatigue (duh!) and hypo-thyroidism. I also have Polycystic Ovarian Disease (or Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) aka PCOS or PCOD. Her main goal is to put me on as little prescription medication as possible, and to try to get me healthy so that my body can heal itself. So, last time she recommended Adrenal Support, a Pharmaceutical Grade Multi-Vitamin, 4000 iu of Vitamin D per day, 160 mg of Saw Palmetto 2x per day, and a topical Progesterone Cream 1x per day (20 mg). She also sent me for more blood work… she wanted to know WHY I was hypothyroid… (environmental, auto-immune, etc) before she prescribed anything. I also had a vaginal ultrasound to see what my ovaries look like… On my own, I have chosen to avoid wheat and dairy as much as possible. When I told her this, she thought it was a great idea, but told me she didn’t want to overwhelm me at first… that’s why she didn’t suggest it herself. She wants me to give it up altogether for 3 months minimum <— EEK! I will have to mentally prepare myself for that one… but I can do it! (I have felt better since I started avoiding it… and when I eat it, I tend to feel crappy the next day).
Here is what I found out today:
My Hypothyroidism is Hashimotos… an autoimmune disease where my body sends “little soldiers” to attack my thyroid and cause it to be sluggish and underactive. This cannot be helped by Armour thyroid, b/c it is derived from pigs… and if my body doesn’t like MY thyroid, it sure as heck won’t like Pig Thyroid hormones! So… She has prescribed me Synthroid and Cytomel to help with that. Also, it turns out my ovaries are covered in cysts… so she is giving me topical Glucophage to help with that (actually a diabetes medication that will help shrink my cysts when applied topically over my ovaries). I am also insulin resistant (part of the reasons carbds make me feel half-silly when I eat them). Oh yeah, and I definitely need to get my mercury fillings replaced… but that is expensive and will be done gradually.
So… The sucky part is that I will have to be on Thyroid meds forever… BUT… the good thing is they will make me feel MUCH better! AND… she said treating my thyroid and my PCOS HUGELY increases my chances of being able to conceive later in life! =D She said if I didn’t start fixing these problems now, she believes that conceiving naturally in the future would be nearly impossible. So… these are GOOD THINGS and I am so glad that I listened to my body and caught them now!
Thanks in advance for your support! =D
I am so pleased you are getting a handle on things, and seem to have found a great doctor.
oh molls.
hugs
fondles
fistbumps
Hi Molly,
Your doctor is something else! For her to be that thorough speaks volumes.
I’m glad you got the answers you were looking for.
yes, I am happy that you got all the answers!!
Could you imagine walking around just pretending nothing was wrong and ignoring the symptoms?
So what about dairy and wheat is related to the thyroid? I found out awhile ago that I had a sensitivity to wheat when I was much younger, but my mom didn’t tell me til now… so I try to stay away from it…but dairy? I’ve heard it can surpress the thyroid further, but no one ever officially told me that…only what I’ve read on the internet…
I’m STILL waiting for my follow up appt with the endo…
I would like to know the WHY as well…is that when the ANTI-thyroid tests? I think mine were out of range…
CBear - thanks for the fondles and fistbumps! I can get them in person tomorrow or Saturday! WHOO HOO!
Skye - yeah I like her a lot too! I am also lucky enough to have someone in my life who works at an alternative medicine clinic and has been FERVENTLY researching health, wellness and natural remedies for over a decade. She has had experiences with amazing, progressive doctors as well as ignorant a-holes who have almost killer her, and everything in between. She also has a VERY large network of people (doctors, nurses, patients, etc) with whom she corresponds almost daily. She is a fantastic sounding board for me as I am very new to all of this and she has been around for a while. Just as with diet and training, there is so much information out there and it’s very hard to know who to trust. “do this! Don’t do that! This is bad for you! This is good for you! Well… it depends!” AAGGH! It’s enough to make you crazy! Luckily I have been in the “training game” for long enough that I feel like I can take “new” information with a grain of salt and discern for myself what is true/not true/exaggerated/dependent upon other factors, etc. But not with this… with this I am at the mercy of others and I have forgotten how much that sucks!
So… that being said, my “ally” in all of this seems to be very impressed with my doctor so far… but she is slightly concerned about the glucophage prescribed to treat my cysts. She has not seen this done before and has emailed some VERY reputable friends of hers who have not heard of it either. I am doing some research of my own right now and plan on going into my next Dr.'s appointment with some questions for her. I also plan on grilling my compounding pharmacist about it when I go pick up my medication today. I will update you all as I get more info! =D
Betty - As you likely know, MOST of the population has at LEAST a sensitivity/mild allergy if not a full blown intolerance to wheat and dairy products… continuing to eat these foods will POUND your adrenals. Think about it… you are consistently eating things that your body recognizes as an “enemy” and this is causing your body lots of stress and forcing you to spend a lot of your time/energy/resources fighting these stressors/“enemies.” As we also know, when one part of your body is under large amounts of stress, it affects others as your homeostasis is disrupted. Here is just one little explanation of how these glands/organs are related:
Also, what did you mean when you wrote this:
“I would like to know the WHY as well…is that when the ANTI-thyroid tests? I think mine were out of range…”
What is the anti-thyroid test?
Had a pretty good workout yesterday!
Barbell Box Squats (@ 80, 85, 90%) (max = 255, using 230 per 5/3/1 manual suggestion)
3 reps @ 185
3 reps @ 195
AMRAP @ 205… I got 8 reps! YAY! I actually kind of surprised myself since everything felt heavy and I didn’t have my iPod and the music they were playing was TERRIBLE! But, last week I got 200 for 8 and it was a PR for reps… so I am THRILLED with 205 for 8.
Then following the 5/3/1 “Boring but Big” protocol, I decided to choose another version of the squat and do 5 sets of 10 @ 40% of my 1 RM. I don’t want to be boring, OR big… BUT I was too lazy to decide on another exercise. =D
Barbell Back Squat (wide stance) max = 255 *.4 = 101.25
5 sets of 10 @ 100 lbs (90 sec rest in between)
*** This was not cool! In fact, it kind of sucked… bad. But, it’s over! Feeling a little tight today… but not too sore.
Overall, pretty good workout
oh, I meant as far as telling HOW you have hashis, as opposed to just “normal,” hypothyroid…I think there are specific blood tests to do for that…and I misspelled it…it’s called thyroglobulin, or something like that, lol…
I was just told I have hypothyroid, with no real reason other than, ‘just because.’ uhh…sounds like you couldn’t get any luckier with the support that you have at least!

Honestly, CBear!
You might as well go ahead and throw in the dry humps

Betty - she knows that my thyroid problems are Hashimotos b/c my antibodies are sky high I believe… indicating that it’s an autoimmune issue (my body is trying to fight itself)… =P
Who told you that it was ‘just because?’ YUCK! Tell them you need answers! Seriously, the treatment is dependent upon WHY you have it!
Skye - please don’t give CBear any more ideas! She comes in town tomorrow! EEK!
Anti-bodies, THATS what I was trying to say…interesting!!
The nurse who I had who was my PCM is the one that diagnosed me July of 08…gave me some pills and sent me on my way…but that wasn’t good enough for me!
I set up an appt with some fancy shmancy endo. place, and all they did was run more tests…I thought the appt would be more formal, but I didn’t even have time to ask questions or anything! my follow up appt is next month, where I plan to get some answers, damnit!!

… how did you KNOW?..
Molly, you’re safe. It’s been only 1 week this time. Still relatively sane… by my own standards, low as they may be.
Betty - hope you get answers too!
Cbear - I know it’s only been a week, and yet my ass still gets fondled within 30 seconds of seeing you for the first time! haha… I know… it looks so nice in a jean skirt that you can’t help yourself… right?
Had a KILLER workout today with Cbear!
Flat Barbell Bench Press (80, 85, 90%) (max=155, using 140)
3 reps @ 110 (80%)
3 reps @ 120 (85%)
AMRAP @ 125 (90%) I got 6… felt OK about this. Everything felt a little heavy today… so wasn’t expecting much…
Kroc Row
28 reps @ 85 lb DB
Then, my coach Jim put CBear and myself through HELL!
Here is what we did (using a band and some assistance from him) (no rest in between)
5 super wide grip pullups
5 shoulder width grip pullups
5 wide grip chin-ups
5 should width grip chin-ups
5 neutral grip chinups
Then we rested 1-2 minutes and did:
12 plate swings and 8 “woodchoppers” on each side with a 35 lb plate
Then we did it again (PUKE!) we DID remove all wide grip pullups/chins (so we did 3 sets of 5) and dropped to a 25 lb plate for the woodchoppers…
I thought I would die!
Dang! You guys have inspired me to keep working on my chins/pull-ups.
Great work!!
Whoa that’s a tough workout.
