MMGALB727's Training Log

OK so I have been a bad updater and follower… still don’t have much time to do either… but will give a quick recap… For the time being, I am choosing to refrain from taking any of the medications I was prescribed (with the exception of the progresterone cream). I took the Synthroid and Cytomel for a couple of days… but have decided to not take them for now. When I went to pick up the glucophage (aka Metformin) it was not ready yet, and since then I have decided against taking it.

I HONESTLY believe that I can HEAL MYSELF by cutting out refined sugar, dairy, and any grain or anything containing gluten. (I am also supplementing with adrenal support, a great multi vitamin, Vitamin D, Saw Palmetto, fish oil and ZMA).

My boyfriend’s mother works at a VERY highly regarded alternative medicine clinic in Asheville, NC and she said she has seen numerous women completely get rid of their ovarian cysts after giving up dairy… whether this means they are “cured” or not doesn’t matter much as long as they are not having the problems that PCOS causes…

And I guess it’s a good thing that I never drink alcohol anyway… and the only carbs I am eating come from berries, sweet potatoes and the occasional raisin…

The reason I think that giving up gluten can help is because the more research I do the more I learn about how when you eat gluten and you are gluten sensitive, your body views this as an attack and sends anti-bodies through your system to attack back at this “foreign invader”… well, sometimes your body mistakes it’s own tissue as the “foreign invader” and begins attacking it again. So if you stop consuming this thing that your body views as the enemy, your body stops sending the anti-bodies to attack… and there will no longer be anti-bodies to attack your otherwise HEALTHY TISSUE. Obviously this is an elementary explanation of what’s going on… but I know I want to give it a try. So I am going to give it a 3-6 month trial run. Absolutely NO GLUTEN, NO DAIRY, and as little refined sugar as physically possible. =P Sound fun, huh?

Like I said, I am very interested in going about this in as natural of a way as possible… and I am very excited to see how my test results change after a couple months of this… =D

Had a great workout yesterday! I had been so busy all week that I hadn’t gotten to work out much at all… so today I combined my Deadlift workout and Idid my Military Press at the end. Looked like this:

Conventional Deadlift (max = 341, ----> 300)
3 @ 240
3 @ 255
AMRAP @ 270… I got 5! YAY! PR for reps!!! WHOO HOO!

Sumo Deadlift (alternated between stiff-legged and regular… so I did 3 sets of stiff legged sumo DLs and 2 sets of regular sumo DLs)
5 sets of 10 reps @ 145 (only 60 second rest in between… YUCK! PUKEY feeling!)

Military Press
3 @ 70
3 @ 75
9 @ 80 —> little disappointed. Last week I got 10 @ 80… but I was pretty beat from DLing and hitting a PR for reps there… so it’s OK. I am exhausted though! Will rest tomorrow and squat on Saturday!

oh you have to have more than 1 pr a day? geezow woman no wonder you have adrenal fatigue and your body in general is shutting down.

p.s. you said youre supplementing with vitamin d. what kind? whyd you choose that one?

howd squatting go?

Haha NO! I don’t have to hit two PRs in a day… but I would like to at least MATCH what I did the week before, SMART-ASS =P

Yes I am supplementing with Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol - the kind produced by your body wen exposed to sunlight) I take 2000 IU’s 2x a day for a total of 4000 IU’s a day… I have read that it is more effective in humans than D2…

Squatting sucked donkey balls! I will write about it below =(

So as I mentioned above, my squat session yesterday SUCKED! I felt OK in warm-ups… but by the time I got close to my work-sets the weight felt HEAVY… my legs felt so WEAK and my lower back was HURTING! I have never had pain like that in my lower back before… it feels OK today, but yesterday it felt like my spine would snap! I was still super sore from Thursday and I wasn’t even considering how much hamstring I needed for my box squats =P

Barbell Box Squats
8 reps @ 45
6 reps @ 95
3 reps @ 135
2 reps @ 165

1st workset (195)
**did 2 and thought I wasn’t going to make it…YUCK! My back started hurting so I foam rolled and stretced for a bit…

2nd workset (205)
** did one and thought my spine was going to snap (this sucks seeing as how I got this for 8 last week! =(

3rd workset (220)
** didn’t even attempt it. I had no spotter and my back was KILLING me… so way I was going to try this!

My legs were sore and my spine was hurting… I didn’t think that loading my spine for step-ups or even using weight for my accessory work for very smart… so I decided to do some single leg squats

Single Leg Squats (onto bench)
2 sets of 10 each leg

Lying Leg Curls (just to get blood into my hamstrings to help with soreness)
3 sets of 15 @ 55 lbs

Done…

***I am going to re-do this workout next week. Squats are usually my first lift of each wave… but I will now move it to the end of this wave because I want to get a good squat workout in before I de-load. =D

Hey Molly, I know a while back you were doing WSFSB…are you still doing it? Or have you changed to something else?

Nope… I’ve been doing 5/3/1 since late March and loving it! I saw that you were getting ready to make the switch… I think you will like it too! I LOVE the idea of steady, consistent progress (the premise behind 5/3/1) and it’s definitely working! I have hit several rep PRs since I started the program… Plus it’s LOTS of fun!

I am getting ready to make the switch but I realize I need to do some serious planning. I don’t even know what my 1RMs are. I’ll probably get that done Saturday. I’m excited, can’t wait!

Good Luck Sky! I can’t wait to hear what your maxes are! =D

Decent workout today. My lower back has been acting up a bit… It bothered me when I squatted last Saturday and then once or twice just doing chores around the house it has felt like it was going to go out… today was deadlift day and I was supposed to work up to 95% of my max for max reps… but I thought that wasn’t very smart with a questionable back… so I decided to forgo that set and be smart for once =D

Conventional BB Deadlift (Max = 341, using 300 as my max)
5/3/1/ @ 75%, 85%, 95%
5 @ 225
3 @ 255
0 @ 285 (didn’t attempt it… my back was bothering me)

Sumo Deadlift (switched back and forth between stiff-legged sumo DLs and Regular Sumo DLs) so I did 3 sets of regular Sumo deads and 2 sets of stiff-legged sumo deads…
5 sets of 10 @ 155 lbs w/ 60 sec rest in between

Done! Ran out of time… had to go =D

Had a great workout yesterday! Worked out with my friend Katy for the first time in forever! It was a Military Press Day, but decided I wanted to squat too since I hadn’t had a good session lately…

Military Press (max = 100, so I use 90)
5/3/1 @ 85, 90, 95%
5 @ 75
3 @ 80
7 @ 85

Squats
5 sets of 10 @ 115 lbs (only 60-75 sec rest in between… KILLER!) My quads HURT today! =P

Pullups
5/4/4 ** having “dead legs” from squats didn’t help much. I felt soooo heavy! =D

All in all, good and quick workout! Will probably still be sore tomorrow! =D

I totally forgot to update about my workout from Monday… it was Bench Press Day and I am SORE! =D

Barbell Bench Press
warm-up with:
7 @ 45
5 @ 75
4 @ 95
At this point, things felt kind of heavy =( I just decided to keep going up and see what happened =D
2 @ 115
2 @ 135
2 @ 135
2 @ 140
*** my coach and his friend were helping me and just started experimenting with different things…
2 sets of 2 reps @ 115 + a 21 lb chain suspended from bands on either side (touching the ground)
2 sets of 4 reps @ 95 @ a 21 lb chain suspended from bands on either side (touching the ground)

Ummm… FRIED! My arms were fried! Then I did a couple sets of pullups and some rope pressdowns (I was in a hurry and didn’t expect bench to take so long…)

My front delts H-U-R-T! =D

'Bout to go deadlift! =D (probably very light… I am squatting Saturday with CBear and don’t wanna be sore!)

Oh yeah… feeling OK right now. Started my period last week… UGH! And the water weight decided to come along for the party too! YUCK-O! Hopefully it will be over soon.

I have my next Dr.'s appt on Monday the 27th (my birthday!) and I am a little nervous to tell her that I am not taking my medication yet. Obviously (as Cbear would say in a whiny kids voice) “she is not the boss of me!” BUT… I do respect her opinion and don’t want her to think otherwise. I just REALLY want to try it without medication for a while… which I don’t think is too much to ask! I just need to suck it up and stand up for myself… =P

I just had to say something…If you have hypothyroid, especially hashis, it’s not going to better…

Quit being stubborn!

Betty - I appreciate the link… but with all due respect… I don’t necessarily agree with you. In fact, here is a quote from the link you just posted:

"WHAT ELSE MIGHT I NEED TO AVOID WITH HASHIâ??S?? Research shows there can be a strong connection between having Hashimotoâ??s disease and gluten intolerance, or Celiac disease. Celiac disease is a digestive disorder that results in an overreaction to gluten, a protein found in most grains like wheat, rye, oats and barley, which can be found in breads, cereals, pasta and many processed foods. The overreaction, in turn, causes autoimmune damage to the intestines, which results in poor absorption of nutrients.

Gluten can also trigger the very autoimmune reactions that cause you to have Hashiâ??s. As a result, some Hashimotoâ??s patients experiment with eliminating gluten from their diets, and with good results."

For now I am completely eliminating anything with gluten, dairy, corn, rice, nuts and avocado from my diet. From the research I have been doing, gluten sensitivity/intolerance can CAUSE autoimmune diseases (as well as cancer, problem pregnancies, etc). Taking something like Synthroid for a long enough period of time can shut down your thyroid completely… NOT a chance I am willing to take without exhausting other options first. Why NOT try something reversible like changes in the diet BEFORE trying something potentially irreversible like taking Synthroid?

Again, I appreciate your concern… but I don’t consider myself stubborn for NOT taking prescription meds the first time they are thrown at me… but rather smart for doing my own research and taking control of my health and disciplined for being willing to drastically change my diet and lifestyle. In the end, I may have to take meds… but when I do I will know that I am basically out of other options.

if she wasn’t stubborn, she wouldnt have her MBA, graduated a year and a half early from college, become an excellent powerlifter, a figure competitor, a beautiful woman, a great friend, or any of the other things that make her the fabulously dynamic woman she is.

You’re going against the American Grain.

literally.

just shut up and have your whole grains. and your cow juice. the fda says theyre good for you. while you’re at it, cut down on the protein and fats. you’re killing your kidneys.

NATURAL HEALING?!?!?!

you damn hippie!!!

those doctors went to MEDICAL SCHOOL!! have you? what do you really know, anyway? sounds like a bunch of voodoo to me. speculation. you can’t prove it.

its strange and i dont understand it. kill it with fire.

but seriously, momma, i’m so glad you’re feeling better, and looking better. any lifestyle change is gonna be rough, but we all know it’s better for you in the long term.

and anytime you need me, i’ll be happy to rub salt in your wounds. while im giving u a hug, of course.

Wasn’t trying to stir things up. I have hypo-t as well.

And I get it…I really do, or maybe I don’t?

I am interested in the connection between food and autoimmune stuff…it’s hard to separate fact from fiction over the internet…

I WAS gluten intolerant when I was younger, so it’s interesting for sure! My Mom says I grew out of it, but do you ever really grow out of it? hmm…And there are no thyroid cases in my family that I know of! Has my diet been the missing answer all along?
Feel free to post any handy links you may come across that are legit! I need some solid info to throw in the endo’s face when I go back!

How has your energy been lately, btw? Are you completely dairy/gluten free now? I avoid it 90% of the time, but haven’t fully taken the plunge.

Thanks Molly!!

Hey Betty! I understand your concern… I am still trying to navigate all of this too…It’s VERY hard to know what to believe and what is just “hype”… and even though I think I have found a great Dr… I am still a tad skeptical about everything she says as well… It’s just so confusing.

Here is a fantastic book about the connect between grains and autoimmune disease:

I just bought a used copy in “like new” condition shipped to my house for $9! Can’t beat it!

From what I have read, you DO NOT “grow out of” gluten intolerance… you “mal-adapt” to it. This is where your symptoms may disappear for a period of time, but the grains are still wreaking havoc in other ways until one day you hit a “breaking point” and you wake up with all of these problems… sound familiar? (ahem, ME!!!)

Energy has been good. I am COMPLETELY gluten free and I have also given up rice and corn as foods (but realized that one or two of my gluten free products contain rice flour or cornstarch… I am still researching this, but will likely eliminate these completely for a minimum of 6 months). As for dairy, I have been eating heavy whipping cream and butter as they do not contain the proteins that are supposedly dangerous and are given the "thumbs-up: by alternative medicine doctors who are typically against dairy, but other than that I have been dairy free (no milk, cheese, ice cream, cottage cheese, whey protein powder, etc). I am switching to “ghee” instead of butter (an Indian clarified butter that contains no casein or lactose) and coconut milk instead of heavy cream. So yes, as of next week I will be 100% dairy free (even though what I have been eating is not considered harmful, I want to be extra safe) and I am already 100% gluten free.

Like I said, energy has been MUCH better! I don’t have any formal readings (i.e. lab work) that say that changing my diet is working… but I am sure I will. I want to give it AT LEAST 6 months to work its magic. I also switched over to all organic. Literally, 98% of what I eat now is organic (some spices are not, and when I eat out at restaurants)… it’s EXPENSIVE… but worth it. =D

I tired doing the 90% thing for a while (well more like 85% as I would have gluten and dairy on my cheat day which is technically about 14% of my week =D) and I felt better during the week and every Sunday (my cheat day) I would be like a zombie… a well-fed zombie… but a zombie nonetheless. In fact, on 4th of July weekend (last time I cheated with the stuff) I could hardly stand up to watch the fireworks outside my house, and ended up passing out on the couch b/c I couldn’t stay awake… it was awful.

I definitely recommend reading that book… it has TONS of peer reviewed research articles references in the back and even teaches you how to talk to your Dr. about certain tests you want and why you think giving up gluten is a good idea for you…

Anyway, glad we can share info back and forth. =D

Thanks, I appreciate discussing things with someone as knowledgeable as you Molly! We go way back, from when I first came back around this place, lol

And yes, I think when I get pg with my second one, it caused my body to go whacko, which was my breaking point…oh man, and I ate a LOT of pasta when I was pregnant with her…blush

I feel your pain about the carbs…I am convinced now that I just can’t have the stuff…last night I had mostly sushi without the rice and a few pieces with, and I now I feel all hungover…just a small example…
But it’s happened before! It’s not worth feeling like crap!

The 90% thing just happens that way…I am too chicken to give up dairy completely…I only have it 1-2 times a day…as for wheat, I can live without it…rice too…tortilla chips? Not so much! :stuck_out_tongue:

It’s hard too, because I don’t have anyone holding me by the hand through this really…No one has ever said,‘no, you cant have that.’
I don’t want to make myself even more sick by giving up foods and not replacing them back in with proper supplements…I’m a poor college student, and we live off of the hubby’s military check…not the richest people in the world!!

So if your tests come back the same/unchanged, what then?
Can you see eating this way forever? And what did you read that put the final nail in the coffin?!

And where did you read the stuff about synthroid? Cause that’s what I’m taking, but am scared now! I stopped taking it awhile back on my own, because I wanted to see how the tests would come back…the first month was ok, but after that I felt like I hit a wall and went back on the meds…

Is your doc comfy with you just trying the cleaned up diet first?

Well, I will get this posted before it gets too long!

I just made an appt to go back to the endo on the 19th of AUG! Plenty of time to do more reading and write up a list of questions!
