MLB Pitcher Rants for PED Use...

Bronson Arroyo, a Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher and former All-Star, admitts to taking amphetamines and andro during the so called ‘Steroid Era’ until they were banned…big deal, right?

But wait…he has NEVER tested positive for any PED. He is ranting about how messed up the league and the public is on PED use.

Some of my favorite quotes from the interview:

“You think this country really cares about what ballplayers put in their bodies?” Arroyo asks. “If we really care, why are we pumping Coca-Cola in every kid’s mouth, and McDonald’s, and Burger King and KFC? That (stuff) is killing people.”

“Whether you think it’s right or wrong, the union (MLB Players’ Union) is there to make sure we look good in the media, make as much money as we possibly can and continue our career as long as we possibly can.”

“I don’t regret a thing,” Arroyo says. “Neither should anyone else.”

“It might be dangerous,” he says, “but so is drinking and driving. And how many of us do it at least once a year? Pretty much everybody.”

“I can see where guys like Hank Aaron and some of the old-timers have a beef with it,” Arroyo says. "But as far as looking at Manny Ramirez like he’s (serial killer) Ted Bundy, you’re out of your mind. At the end of the day, you think anybody really (cares) whether Manny Ramirez’s kidneys fail and he dies at 50?

I was watching ESPN changing into my workout clothes today and caught the analysts reporting. It was refreshingly interesting how they took this story. They said that they were waiting for players to stand up and speak out about this ‘witch hunt’ (term actually used on ESPN!). They also stated that steroids have many medicinal purposes and why should we judge these players…I couldn’t believe my ears!

I instantly became an Arroyo fan, he is 6’5", 195 lbs. and is attacking this epidemic. He probably would never be accused, yet he is coming to the front.

Thought is was a good read, mainly baseball directed of course, but a fresh breath of air next to all the kissing ass by caught PED users. We can only hope this continues in MLB and filters down to the legislation in this misguided country.

Sorry for the rant, but the recent articles I have been reading about ‘Physique Profiling’ and illegal searches have had my blood boiling along with many of my T-Nation brothers and sisters.

He’s the link:

Thanks for posting that. I read Arroyo’s comments this morning on ESPN and was waiting for some of its baseball headpieces to start condemning him, but maybe, just maybe he’s shed a small amount of sanity onto the whole situation. He’d have come across a little better if he’d left out the drinking and driving rationalization, though.

I’m glad you liked it. I’m an ex-college baseball player turned bodybuilder, so I’m double interested in these articles…lol. The drinking and driving thing was a little off base, I think he was trying to get at how there are thousands of alcohol related deaths per year, yet it is legal and rarely talked about. I hope other professional athletes add to this movement, and don’t just let it fade away, and miss a great opportunity to help snap people back to reality.

About time

Baeball has always had bogus testing. When the controversy broke out they tested all the players and kept it secret until recently (a few names have slipped out). But since then you look at who they have “caught” and it’s a bunch of minor league scrubs. It’s like feeding the giant a few sacrificial lambs to keep him fed and not hungry for more. Anybody that thinks there isn’t still roided up baseball players and football players is kidding themselves.
