Mixed Grip Barbell Shrugs

I appreciate everyone’s feedback. I’ve decided to give straps a shot. I want to keep advancing my grip, but also don’t want my grip to be the limiting factor in my shrugs.

SSC, you’re jumping to conclusions without asking about other factors like range of motion, form, timing, etc. On barbell shrugs, I use strict form, slow reps x 10, and full ROM. I focus on trap recruitment without cheating from arms and legs. You can do far more weight with shitty form. And if you think shrugs should exceed deadlifts in the amount of weight you can pull, that tells me your shrug form is pretty shitty.

Bottom line: by my calculations, you shouldn’t pass judgment without getting your facts together first.

Of course you talk about “shitty form” with no pictures of your traps.

Shut up or back your shit up.

Now leg drive is shitty form for shrugs. That’s grand.

So worried about your grip strength stagnating but you wont even allow your hands to get stronger by throwing on some more weight and using some leg drive to keep the bar moving.

You think his “calculations” about doing so much more weight with shrugs than with deadlifts make sense?

He was the one passing judgment, not me.

Dude, if you truly believe that I was accurately trying to guesstimate your deadlifting poundages (or anyone else for that matter, including Kouidyiadkakides) wow.

The entire thread is a bunch of guys saying “Hey, you shouldn’t do it in the way that you’re asking about.” And then you reply “Yeah, but I wanna do it because… . . . . …” Whatever. Do whatever the fuck you want to do. I truly don’t give a shit what your form looks like, but I know that any frat bro or any post-pubescent man can probably shrug 275 without any kind of issues.

By the way, I know guys who shrug 675 x a lot, and you know what, their traps are rather large.

Or you could read my posts? There’s that option too.

But I bet their form is so shitty it doesnt even count. They dont win at shrugs cus of the leg drive

To be fair, I don’t think they got three white lights from the shrug judges during the competition.

Most of the guys in this thread had something constructive to add, whether pro or con on using mixed grip for shrugs. You added nothing, except to comment on how you couldn’t understand how I’m “only” shrugging 275. My point was that unless you know my form, reps, timing, etc. you’re not in a position to judge. And even then, what value are you adding by putting me down for my shrug weight?

Again, thanks to those that provided constructive feedback. I’ll give straps a shot.

My Advice is use a standard grip, get some straps, get into a squat rack, and push your self a lot further. Honestly, i didnt really notice much trap development UNTIL i started shrugging 500.
I feel like I keep sounding like an asshole throughout this thread, but I don’t understand a 275 shrug. OP, by my calculations, is deadlifting… 185 x 6 if he’s only doing 275?

I just now realized, this thread is extremely full of fail.
Uh, what?

Shrug strength now determines deadlift strength?

And how did you come to this calculation?

I think that was the biggest ‘fail’ in this thread…
Taking comment that says “by my calculations” 100% literally on bodybuilding forum = angry midget.

Now SSC, how DID you come to that conclusion?? Surely you aren’t taking some poetic liberty assigning arbitrary numbers to a person you know nothing about. That’s an internet crime punishable by making blowjays to everyone.
Lol, god damnit. Will I always be an angry midget? :frowning:

And btw, does chalk really help all that much? I personally find difficulty using straps because my hands are so tiny… sometimes it makes it harder for me to hold on to the bar/dumbbell.
Yeah chalk helps a lot.

By my calculations it adds 200lbs x 8 reps to my shrugging weight.

No but seriously I have normal sized hands and can get 5pps on smith shrugs for 6ish reps. Without chalk? Maybe 4pps for less reps beause the bar slips.
Sweet, thanks! Will have to pick some up this saturday.

Yes, please excuse me. My sarcasm detector is often inhibited by bouts of angry midget syndrome. :frowning:

forlife…

just use the straps, you’re not less of a man for using straps,
and how you’re defending your 275 shrug by saying others is shitty is a classic defense mechanism.

funny how you can learn so much about psychology on T-Nation!

It’s pretty clear that he is using the SuperSlow method. So, if a+b=c, then by my calculations (thanks for letting me use your calculator, SSC) he shrugs 275 plus the amount of dicks he has (0). 275+0=275. He clearly weighs 275lbs and we should all shut up and start bowing down, in accordance with the SuperSlow method. Thirty seconds down…and stay there forever.
