Maine History on Racism and Xenophobia
While Maine continues to grow in culture and race, it is important to acknowledge the history of Maine that is embedded in racism and xenophobia. Beginning with the forceful removal of Native Americans and dissemination of their culture until the 1970s, Maine has had a recurring history rooted in division and segregation. The Free State opposed slavery laws during the Civil War, however masked its treatment of African Americans through untold stories of horrific conduct toward the Malaga people. The 1920s were a time of resurgence and revival as the Klu Klux Klan became a political force. The Klan, widely known for white supremacy and hatred of African Americans, targeted French-Canadian and Irish immigrants; in part due to the negligible number of African Americans residing in Maine.
The 1920s set a haunting tone showing a repetition in history as laws were made to eradicate the French language, segregate communities, and create a social hierarchy based on class. More recently, with the influx of new immigrants, Maine continues to battle racist sentiments set by its founding fathers and policies based on inequity. From banks and real estate professionals engaged in a racist lending practice known as āredliningā to keep people out of neighborhoods because of race or nationality to implicit othering of minority communities, the effects of Maineās systemic racism are still felt today.

They targeted every non-Protestant, non Anglo Saxon. Germans, Northern Europeans, Asians et cetera. Blacks were just more prominent than whites whose last names were not Smith in the south.
It grossly misrepresents Maineās history. Maine basically rejected Klan policy immediately. They were somewhat influential in that one governorās race but never managed to defund Catholic schools until 100 years later with woke Democrats in power.
French was never banned or attempted to be eradicated. They made a public policy decision to teach in English to give the children of Maine (Lewiston especially) the best chance of success in Maine, not back in Quebec. Multi-language learning was always supported and still is, to whatever degree a local public school can support instructing in 12 languages.
When I moved here roughly 30 percent of Lewiston spoke French at home, a greater proportion than even New Orleans. Nobody tried to eradicate French.

Maine was one of the most tolerant places on the planet last century.
Woke Democrats will go down as the ones who eradicated French in Maine. Many French have left Lewiston after raising families here for generations. Lots of Mainers are gone. I donāt think youāll be hearing much French at all in Lewiston 50 years from now. You donāt hear much today.

I donāt normally pay much attention to AOC except for amusement, but her taking pronouns out of her bio is a HUGE sign of woke crumbling in front of us.
Sheās woke royalty and has gained a great deal personally by accepting her ordained role as a High Priestess. I would not have predicted something like this at all.
