Minocycline and Catabolism

The package insert and other medical texts indicate that the tetracyclines can cause decreased human protein synthesis. However, taken in doses of 100 mg twice a day, has anyone noticed that minocycline has negatively affected their lean body mass, recover, or bodybuilding progress? Is there any practical catabolism side effect of minocyline in anyone’s experience if taken for acne, and what negative effects has anyone noticed on lifting progress??

I have been taking 100mg of minocycline a day for 2 weeks now, and have noticed a slower recovery rate. I have not noticed a change in LBM or strength. I would like to know if there are any supplements I should avoid taking while on minocycline, ie:Nandrosol/Androsol. Any clue?

Yeah, I have this question too. I know a lot of people, probably tmag readers have had ocassion to try minocycline or another tetracycline and know that many know the effects or theoretical effects on weightlifting concerns. I have been also holding out on using it for acne due to lack of knowledge of this. Everyone, please post your experiences!

I was on minocycline for about 16 weeks. If memory serves me, I took 50mg twice daily. My progress in the gym was in no way affected. Even if my training would have been affected, I would still have taken it. Pimples can cause major scarring. Besides, you don’t have to stay on the antibiotics forever. Another way to prevent acne (this comes from the late Dan) is to consume a diet of 40% protein with no more than 30% carbs. Another remedy I use is borage oil (it’s an EFA, not a topical). When I experience a breakout, I take 1-2 tablespoons for a week or so. This usually does the trick.
