You might get the added benifit of increased fast twitch preferance with push press. I’m with the have the cake & eat it too crowd here, do both.
Seminole - I tend to smash it up behind like a drop snatch which might not be good for someone with shoulder pain/impingement or low training age. How do you do them?
I see the Military and Push Press scenario being similar to Curls and Cheat Curls.
Use the Military press to build hypertrophy. Then use the Push Press to increase the hardness of the muscles.
Thats if your goal is hypertrophy. If you’re doing an Oly lift program then do Push Presses.
What is hardness? It is my understanding that you can increase contractile and non contractile elements deending on rep range, vascularity & capillarisation or you can reduce fat for this effect.
Be careful when using the push press (as with any explosive exercise done overhead), particularly late in the workout. I witnessed a guy losing his balance slightly as he exploded to the top of the movement and lost the bar behind him, tearing his rotator cuffs. This is an extreme case, but it pays to take extra caution.
It helps to learn first how to safely ‘fail’ a lift before doing this with a lot of weight.
Definitely do your push presses or any other explosive movements first or close to first in your workout…
Excellent guys!
