Mighty Stu, How do you Train?

Kellogg’s should endorse Stu.

Stu should turn down BSN and all the other big name supp companies and instead be on the box of every flavor of Pop Tarts.

lmao… I could picture that.

Don’t you worry that if you start with something like a pop tart that you unleash a sweet pasty chocolate frenzied carb deprived monster? This is what happens to me anyhow.

How is it possible that you can have just one??

damn one poptart would not satisfy me at all lol

reeses puff cereal is where it’s at  1.5 cups + 1-2 scoops protein powder in a shake = nice big bowl of cereal

LIFT AND EAT: I’ll try to dig up some old pics if I can. I’m not much of a photo album guy, and most of the pics I’ve collected over the years are probably in my parents basement out on Long Island. I will remind anyone paying attention that I started college weighing 152 lbs, and stayed about that weight until I hit the weights at age 20. I was one of those guys who THOUGHT I was in great shape because I had a little arm definition and some hint of abs. I didn’t realize that I was just not fat. Anyway, here’s the only pic I have on my current computer desktop that’s not some meathead-shot from the last 5 years or so. I was such an adorable kid, what the hell happened?! -lol

Haha I guess you had to grow into the gloves  You look like you meant business though!

Yeah if you find a pic that would be good, but whenever, I know you’re kind of preoccupied right now!

I think it would be interesting (and useful) for some guys to see how someone who was 152lb and thought they looked ok, transforms into where you are now. Kind of illustrating the fact that you had alot of work to do to get bigger BEFORE you could think about competing and cutting to where you are now.

Like you said, you thought you were in pretty good shape, but in hindsight, you now know how much work it takes to be ready to step on stage and I don’t just mean the contest prep period, but all the years previously where you had had to find out what works for you.

In real life, it’s not always a linear progression and it’s good to see someone work through all the ups and downs, dealing with injuries or other life setbacks, it makes people (beginners) see how dedicated you need to be over the long term.

I think guys these days are so lucky they have resources like T-Nation and as long as they can filter the BS, they have a goldmine of info to help with their journey. I for one know I would have made alot less mistakes, if it had been around when I started lifting.

That’s just beautiful! LMAO~!

Iron Dwarf… JUST WOW!

ROFL!

hahaha that is awesome

I am really enjoying these threads about posters and their training like this one and Cephalic Carnage, and Dirty Gerdy. Great idea guys.

Stu, how long are your workouts? Have you noticed what works better for you, whether evening or morning?

When you aren’t getting ready for a comp do you still keep to 4-days a week?

you look great and thanks for taking the time with answering all the questions

I would totally buy that!

By the way Stu, I tried out that Cable X-over Back exercise you mentioned earlier, and that is a great find! Definitely helps with the mind-muscle connection for back exercises.

about that cable back exercise, do you have any videos explaining it?

You said you just grab the top cables but you don’t really bend your arms right? So is the ROM really short?

For your elbows yes, I just focused on contracting my upper back as far as I could with as little arm movement as possible. That’s what I imagined from his description at least.

Okay, I’m laughing pretty damn hard over that Poptart box. Great stuff IronDwarf -lol. Coincidentally I was just trying to convince some young kids that the blueberry is the most anabolic fruit

DEBRA- Believe me, I’d love nothing more than to really dive into an entire box, but I keep reminding myself that most people couldn’t get this far anyway, and that by holding myself to higher standards… (I know this will sound awfully arrogant)… I’m better than other people -lol.

PUMPED- My parents buy Reese’s cereal, and when I’m not dieting, and I go visit, the 1st thing I do is go to their kitchen and pour a giant serving bowl full of the stuff!

OCTOBERGIRL- I usually train with a 5 day split rotation, although I don’t typically do any cardio, so depending on how my week is going, sometimes I can actually train 6 days a week, and sometimes I can only get 3. This all depends on my work schedule, and being honest with myself as to how run down I get, and if I truly feel an ‘off’ day is warrented, or if I’m just feeling lazy (then I just make a big pot of coffee and suck it up).

My workouts, which are typically two bodyparts each (a large one, and a smaller one) can take anywhere from an hour, to 90 minutes, depending on if I’m training with my partner, if we’re doing heavy weights with longer rests, or if I’m just feeling a little run down, so because I can’t summon real intensity I end up doing a few more sets of each exercise. This is an area where I really feel the addition of BCAAs peri-workout has helped me in the past year as my volume has gone up a bit (as I’ve backed off some of the really crazy shit I used to do).

THAT ONE GUY- Glad you like that. I seem to be the weird-dude who has brought some odd exercises into my gym, and usually a few weeks later, I see younger guys trying to do what they saw me doing (and usually incorrectly). I just did them tonight, and right after, did bent over rows with two dumbells into my waist… sooooooo much cramping going on! -lol

PUMPED- It is a very short movement. When I had an injured bicep, and would do barbell rows, I would make it almost a horizontal SHRUG motion. Think of your back in terms of that short crunching motion, and you won’t bend your elbows as much.

LIFT ADN EAT- My Uncle was actually Larry Holmes’ corner man, so true story, I got those gloves from the champ himself.

Did I miss anything? -lol

Thanks Stu, I think I already told you I have switched to those FiberOne PopTarts for my PWO.

in regards to BCAAs, you say you take them periworkout and you’ve noticed an improvement in your intensity towards the end of your workouts. You must be using powdered BCAAs and drinking it. I didn’t know it would have such an immediate effect!

thanks again

this guy Stu is a man of the people, answers the questions, shakes the babies, kisses the hands, and trims the hedges of many small villages…

Stu i concur about peri-workout drink. I craft mine out of power aid, waxy mazie, and BCAA powder. Creatine comes pre-and post in pill form. i’ve created a fabulous “during my workout drink” and didn’t pay a lot for it. Sad that don’t get a fancy shaker with it or a free t-shirt but these things are bound to happen when you do it yourself.

Stu,

Go to Kellogg with that box mockup and a business proposal.

Everyone else, buy stock in Kellogg a few days prior.

We’ll all be rich. Champagne riches and blueberry Pop Tart dreams…bliss.

Lol, I mix my own little anabolic concoction in this red metallic water bottle I have, and no one ever really knows for certain what’s in there. I’m sure my training partner Corey tells the kids who ask all sorts of B.S.stories about Gorilla testosterone of something. My other friend Mitch once convinced this rather daft woman who always asked about my calves that they were implants, and when he pointed out the ‘scar’ from the alleged operation (actually a vein on the back of my leg), she swore up and down how she could see it!

S

ok I’m pretty sure I get it now

I’m guessing you don’t count rest periods? Sometimes I think I shouldn’t but then get the feeling like if you end up resting too long your not giving your muscles as much stimulus compared to last time. I guess in the long run you would know if your progressing though.
