Mid/Upper Back Pain After Chest Day

Hey All,

New to this site, so firstly hello!

Im looking for some advice, so I’ll get straight to the issue. I have been working out for over 3 years steady and have had plenty of gains and no injuries, until about 3 weeks ago. I was doing my max on decline bench and all the sudden got an intense thrombin head/neck ache. It was so bad I left the gym and went to bed. I woke up the next day and my mid back (between shoulder blades righe near the spine) felt seriously swollen and stiff.

I took about a week off and got a deep tissue massage on the area and thought all was well. However, the following week after chest day (I lowered the weight quite a bit) the pain came back, not as intense but same area.

Side note, I work in an office setting and sit too much.

Any suggestions?

Much appreciated !
Thanks

The smart thing to do here would be lay off the bench press until your symptoms are gone. Sounds like a mild disc irritation. Start doing some pain free postural exercises and revamp your bench technique in the meanwhile. Not sure if you maybe decline pressed with a forward head which people often do, add in the valsalva and load and you may have slightly popped a disc

You may be a good candidate for chiropractic

Well… how do you do your decline bench? What’s the angle of the incline, angle of your elbows, how do you pack your shoulders, are you bracing, sucking in, pushing out, what are you doing with your head/neck… there’s a lot of factors at play here.

How would you describe your pain? Is there any numbness or tingling? Is there any pain with bending forward, backward, side bending, or rotating? Do you have a history of neck pain or any other medical conditions (high bp, diabetes, heart disease, respiratory, etc…)?

What’s your routine like, how often do you train, what sort of back and upper body work do you do, what sort of low back, abs, stability work?

I won’t wager any guesses, considering the lack of information, but I don’t believe it to be a disc. Thoracic disc issues are typically MVA related.
