Metallica - Death Magnetic

Metallica greatest heavy metal band period.

I’m really liking this album. It’s hard-hitting in parts and melodic and groovy in others. Just bought my tickets to see them in concert in Nov. and am looking forward to that show.

I just bought the album from iTunes. Yes, I already had it (downloaded it for free when it was initially leaked), but it’s something I’m going to keep listening to because it rocks, so they deserve my few shekels for it.

I never did understand people freaking out when bands (Metallica or anyone else) would get upset that an artist wouldn’t like the idea of someone stealing their shit for free, as if it “should” just be available to everyone free of charge. WTF?!!??? Tell that to your local car dealer about his cars, or to Best Buy about their TV’s and computers.

Some people are just silly.

There’s a torrent out there called “Death Magnetic - Better Shorter Cutted.”

It’s a remix done by some guy who thought that some of the songs had boring parts that could be safely removed. The total time goes from 74 minutes to 48…

Here’s what the guy who did the remix says about it:

[i]i’m the ‘enterprising young audio engineer’ that made death magnetic: better, shorter, cut. i knocked it out last friday (9/5) in about six hours using a copy of peak pro (2 track stereo editing program). i then posted it to a couple of torrent sites on 9/6 as “better shorter cut” ?? it almost sank, but then somebody else re-posted it as “better, shorter, cutted.” why, i don??t know, but god bless’em?

basically, i just wanted a new album by metallica that i could listen to without getting irritated by some lame lyrics or ploddy riffs that go nowhere for three minutes before turning into something cool. the original version of death magnetic is the best thing that they’ve done since …and justice for all, but it ain’t great. my version is great.

if the dudes in metallica see my re-cut as a slap in the face, well, they can download two of my albums for free off my website - Henchmusic.com - and cut them up and distribute them any way that they want. better yet, they can hire me to make sure that they don’t include any sucky parts on their next album.

there’s no need to print any of this, but hey… “the more you know.”

all the best,

Hench

I haven’t had time to listen to it completely, but I think it might be an improvement on the original. Some of the original songs do have parts where they’re just plodding along.

So, just a heads up for those of you who might be interested in checking it out.

I agree in part, but lets face it: Metallica had all of us scared for another crappy project. I wasn’t going to drop bones on something that had the potential to be as bad, or worse, than that other album.

I like supporting the artists i like, and if I like an album, I’ll buy it. If I don’t like the music, I’ll just delete it off my hard drive. At least this way I can hear what I’m buying.

If 100% of CD sales profit went back to the artist, I would gladly pay $20 for a CD. But this is far from the case(save for the well established bands like Metallica who don’t get raped by their label). I’m not saying it’s ok to steal, but it’s not “just like” stealing a tv from Best Buy as the RIAA would like you to believe. They are protecting THEIR interests, and all these lawsuits you hear about against people who downloaded music, NONE of that money is going back to the artists, it’s going into the label’s checking account.

Is it morally wrong to download music for free from the internet? Hell yes. But what the music industry has been doing to musicians for the past 35 years is also morally wrong.

Bands have always made the bulk of their money on touring. If you want to support them, fork out some cash and see them live and buy some merch.

Totally agree. It would be nice if the middle men could be cut out entirely so the band would get all the money. Some underground bands do exactly that by self-producing and distributing their albums themselves. Of course, we’re talking on a far smaller volume than bands like Metallica (who got big in the early days through tape-trading their own stuff with friends/fans).

Definitely…go see the bands live and buy their merch.

Whoever is selling a product, phsyical, music, whatever, that you don’t own, deserves to be paid for it if you wish to have it. Whether that is an artist, a record label or some combination thereof (which it is), if you want their stuff, you should PAY them for it. Not TAKE it from them. The record companies invest a lot of money into production, promotion, marketing, advertising, distribution and other necessary functions. If the artists don’t like their cut that they’re getting from the record companies they don’t have to do business with them. That’s their prerogative.

Why do many of them still deal with major record labels? Because major record labels can fund the production and marketing of, and therefore SELL major amounts of records. Lots more records sold means more money in the artists’ pockets. If it didn’t, they would just try to promote and sell the albums on their own. But they don’t.

Again though, this is not any of our business. What IS our business is that the songs/albums are not owned by us (until we pay for them). They’re owned by both the artists and their record labels.

One more point in favor of the remix, then.

Agreed on all points to some extent. I’m not trying to argue the morals of this(that is up to the individual). I just wish my money went to the bands I love, and not some rich old geez that is trying to force Hannah Montana down everyone’s throat.

I got the album one week ago and I like it more and more. I think it might be the best Metallica albm since And Justice For All.

Just picked up the album a few days ago and was blown away! I stopped caring about Metallica after the Black Album, but this new one sounds on fire… like the guys got gasoline transfusions! I love the new drum mix, and “bitey” guitar tones. James hasn’t sung this angrily in many years. It’s like a return to days of old

I’ll be seeing them in January. Last time I saw them was in '86!

Damn. A friend just sent me this, with the message: “Metallica are pansies.”

Really enjoying the album and can’t wait to see them Nov. 4 in CO.

I’ve been listening to the album non-stop since I got it. I really love it! Like others have said, I think it’s their best stuff since …And Justice for All. Pretty much the entire album is going into my workout mix.

Alright after hearing one song on the Radio and reading this thread I’m heading to pick this up after work with high hopes!
