So long as a microphone NEVER lands in front of him, fine by me. Actually, Hetfield is really a very good lead guitarist as well. He’s had his share over the years…

I would prefer it if James did play the solos. If you took Kirk’s wah pedal away from him I don’t think he can play a guitar.

WAT??

the master of “MASTER OF PUPPETS”… can’t… can’t play a guitar?

Scott

If we add the comments from the recent Slipknot thread, we can deduce that:

Trujillo walks funny and brings nothing much bass-wise.

Hetfield has no voice left and little writing ability when sober.

Ulrich fucks up on the drums a lot.

Hammet can’t play and his solos are mostly wah-wahs.

Damn, no wonder they suck.

Rob’s stuff from Suicidal was pretty cool. He’s much more of a pocket bass player. He has some serious skillz but seems to choose not to use them most of the time.

Last night at 10pm EST Metallica was on the radio with Dave Grohl playing some stuff from their new album. Not sure what stations they were broadcasting on across the country but it was DC101 in the Washington DC area. Pretty cool, I liked most of the stuff I heard.

i listened to a few songs that were on youtube… and aside from “the day that never comes” i wasnt very impressed. come on, unforgiven 3??? are u serious? i’d say its time for metallica to just give up. hate to say it. but i think its that time.

Check out Infectious Grooves for more of his skills.

I can’t comment just yet. My comp is so slow. I would just like to stick up for metallica and suggest that for them to play whatever sound you loved when you first heard them for the rest of their lives would be horribly boring.

Even though i have not been a fan of the last few albums, i give them credit for trying new things and evolving. You don’t get better by repeating what you have always done, and you certainly have to make mistakes.

The problem is not metallica. Its their fans. Who just want to listen to their golden oldies, relive their teens. “Man, everything else sucks! you shoulda heard metallica back in 1988!!!”
Hey, I agree with you when it comes to them as artists. I would be the same way. You have to “evolve”, if you want to stay creative.

But, you also agree that their last few albums were sub-par. Wouldn’t you have liked them to put out something that you thought was great? Sure you would.

The people who were fans from their early days, loved them like no other band from that era. They had attitude, balls, and weren’t pretty boys. They wrote music that mattered, played with intensity, and weren’t sellouts.

The 90’s came, along with Napster, now all of a sudden money DOES matter, wrote and played mediocre music. Which for them, is crap. Their shit songs are still better than a lot of other bands good songs (Nickleback for example).

So, is it wrong for the older fans to want to love them, and their music again? I don’t think so.

what do you mean about a microphone?
i talk in one everyday
what do you mean i have a shitty vocal system?
i hit a note when I have to
What do you mean I can’t make one on time
I got somethin’ better to do
And, what do you mean I don’t have to sound shrill?
Why do you think I smoke?

If there’s a new way,
I’ll be the first in line
But…it better work this time
Mustaine can’t sing worth a shit, but he doesn’t have to. Their intensity, and attitude bury most bands these days.

Peace sells…

BUT WHOS BUYING!

Oh, I know. That was good.

Of course, now I can’t get the song out of my head. Damn you.

Sorry to quote my own post, but every time I hear this song (End of the Line) now it REALLY pisses me off that they cut this awesome part out! After the slow intro I’m expecting them to charge into it (the part I was referring to in the youtube link) but there’s just some lame-ass slower section instead.

Who the FUCK was in that studio and said, “Hey guys, let’s take out THIS section, the most TOTALLY FUCKIN’ ROCKING MINUTE’S WORTH OF MUSIC WE’VE MADE IN ALMOST 20 YEARS, and replace it with some lameness!”

Did Rick Rubin do that? Did little Lars request the change? WTF?!?
Damici wrote:
HERE’S the early version of “End of the Line” that I was talking about! Fast-forward to about 2:57, after the 2 slow intros (first one where Trujillo’s bass was the wrong one, then he got the RIGHT bass guitar, then they did the slow intro again).

At about 2:57 the FAST intro part that I was talking about starts, and it fucking ROCKS!!! That was the best part of the fuckin’ song!! Why would they take it out??

I’m listening to it now. (I’m on the third song). So far it FUCKING ROCK!!!

The only thing I’m upset about so far is that in the second song, End of the Line, which was the one they’d been performing live month ago just calling it “New Song,” (see YouTube) they took out the super-fast double-bass drum / guitar lead-in that kicked in right after the slower intro. That part rocked!!! Why’d they take it out?!

But the album rocks so far!!

Do you mean “Cyanide”?

That was the best part of the song.

Ok, now the first song, “Almost Like Your Life” has really grown on me and might’ve overtaken, or at least tied, the fifth song “All Nightmare Long” as my favorite so far.

Oh, man!!! Nostalgia!!! I’m digging that stuff out of the collection right now!

I’m just listening to it on their site and this is the best shit they have produced for well over a decade.

Granted most people won’t say that is hard. I thought St Anger had some great songs. St Anger, Some Kind of Monster, and The Unnamed Feeling were solid in my opinion.

Load and Reload had some good shit on them and it probably could have been merged into one good album. Bleeding me is one of my all time favourites and sounded great live. There were a number of songs that I enjoyed and still do on those two albums.

Garage would have been a bit of fun for them and also has some songs I am quite partial to.

Metallica will always rub someone up the wrong way. The Napster dealings and Mustaine’s droogies will mean there will always be those who bag the shit out of them for every little thing.

All nightmare long, The Judas Kiss, and My Apocalypse are fucking solid. They rest of the album will grow on us too like Kill Em All, Ride, Puppets and Justice have for over 2 decades.

Another thing I think that works against Metallica’s latest releases are the fact that I and many fans grew up with their earlier albums and I think you have that closer connection to music when you’re younger as it shapes you.

Metallica shaped me and I can slap on any of their earlier shit and it takes me right back to my teenage years. It’s a fucking part of me just as Death Magnetic will be for todays youth.

I just bought the CD.

Do Metallica hire consultants to help them find ideas to piss off their fans?

First of all, the damn CD booklet is glued to one of the cardboard flaps that surround the jewel case. Gee, it’s so much more fun to try and read the lyrics with the whole jewel case flapping away.

Second, they have a little coffin shaped depression on the CD. Cute design. Problem is that the damn depression is actually cut into the booklet and that the words have been cut away in many places… Argh!

That Lars would sign off on such a design, I can understand. He’s like concentrated asshole essence that’s been pressure injected in a small runty body. If he was a perfume, he’d be like Eau-de-Cocksucker #5. But James? WTF James? Kirk? New bass guy? WTF do you do this to your fans?

I agree with you. I really liked Black album and Load, along with Garage. Load had this kind of mean, menacing, grungy quality to it that I really really liked (NOT grunge as in the genre!). Vindictive kinda.

It wasn’t metal but it was aggressive and angry and good all the same. Garage was just cool because they covered a bunch of songs, pretty daggone well IMO

With the exception of TATSNBN, and much of reload (though there were several genuinely good songs on it), I’ve really loved their entire discography. Those last two albums have been the majority of the last decade though, so I’ve still been pretty depressed waiting for them to come out with something genuinely metal again. Until now, of course.

Agreed on your other points as well.
imhungry wrote:

Yup, that’s why I bought it.

I downloaded the whole thing over a week ago; I’ve commented on it previously on this thread.

I usually buy CDs when I feel that there’s a least 3 or 4 tracks of “good stuff” vs. filler crap… in this case, I pretty much enjoy the whole thing.

I’m a little miffed because pretty much the only additional thing I get from the CD is the booklet with the lyrics… and in this case, they screwed THAT up nicely.

I bought this yesterday and have listened to it once so far full through. Initial impressions are, James can’t write awesome lyrics much anymore, but they’re effective none the less. The drums are 10x better than St. Anger, in general not amazing, but Lars was never known as a good drummer…

Guitars are ok, they sound a little to modern to me, which they have since Load I think. Its not bad, but I just like how from the start they always had an evolving guitar tone, but its been the same for a while now. Oh, and Kirk seriosuly needs to lay off the Wah for a while, I think this has more wah than the Black album! Ok maybe not…

Overall its pretty good, its not another MoP or RtL, which is good, because if I want to hear either of those, I’ll listen to them. I don’t want Metallica to release Master of Puppets 2008.
