Metallica vs Megadeth

This is one for the metal fans.

I’ve traditionally been in Metallica’s corner on this one but Megadeth are doing a lot to win me over. Having been in Australia a couple years, Metallica has obviously not ventured over here. Megadeth is coming back in November for a second time in as many years.

The Metallica website lays dormant for weeks on end where Megadeth’s is updated almost daily.

I’m starting to lean towards Megadeth over Metallica. I’d have to say Mustaine is doing more than is expected by the fans where Metallica are doing a lot less. I’m just wondering whether anyone else agrees with this?

I've had Megadeth over Metallica since Rust In Peace . It came to my attention that more than likely after Metallica kicked Mustaine to the curb , Metallica kept his ideas. Thats why kill em all and master of puppets kicked ass. Black album was good but not as good as their earlier projects.

Since the break up Megadeth has just kept doin what they do best ...... ROCK .Mustaine even seems to have a much better down to earth attitude. More than I can say for any member of metallica's current line up.

Mustaine is a jerkwad, but at least Megadeth is keeping the melodic SF style of metal flame alive & moving forward, while Metallica has gotten the Rolling Stones disease: Too rich to rock…

I don’t like too much after And Justice for All but anything before that I find timeless. Overall I like Metalica better but I like the guitar work in Megadeath ruled. Marty Friedman was amazing. Unfortunately I’m not as crazy about him anymore. Chris Poland is also a motherfucker on the ax. I’ve seen his fusion band OHM a few times and he still rips. I’m not sure how you guys would like it. The music kinda out there.

I think Hetfield is a great rhythm guitarist. Kirk is so so. Dave Mustang is kind of a douche but to play what he plays and sing at the same time takes a lot of rhythmic independence and from a musicians POV he’s got my respect.

Unfortunately after seeing him in some kind of monster and hearing about his politics, I can’t say I like the guy too much but I did have a friend who just met him not long ago and he was a pretty nice guy.

I like both Mustaine and Hetfield as frontmen and I am definetly happy Mustaine was sent packing as it has provided 2 brilliant bands.

I think the DVD ‘That one night in Buenos Aries’ by Megadeth showed the energy is still there. Compare the ‘Live, shit, binge and purge’ by Metallica to one of their latest concerts and the energy is just not there. Megadeth, or Mustaine, have kept up the pace.

This latest work with Rick Rubin might change my mind though.

Old albums up to and NOT including the beginning of the demise of Metallica “And Justice For all” id say Metallica had them, edged out. BUT Megadeth was in the running for sure had some quality tunes just not the total solid albums that were Puppets, kill em all, the original Garage days, ride the lightening, the singles with misfits covers like Jump in the fire and creeping death now added to Lightening and Kill em all. That was quality work.

Since then Megadeth has them, trampled. Metallica I wouldnt even consider real metal from Justice and and was all marketing hype, out for the money. I dont blame them I just wont buy into it myself

The pimp suits, short hair of the Load and Reload days are something I look back on and cringe. I do like the music they produced and showed a great deal of versitility but the days pre-Black album were gold.

Hopefully they recapture their Justice style days with this new album. Whenever that may be!

I hate this topic…I really do.

Musically, Megadeth has been light years ahead of Metallica, no question. “Cool what’s in” factor, I guess Metallica wins that, and that’s what makes them so appealing. Dave’s voice is something to get use to, but on that note, because of him you have Kill 'Em All, a lot of Ride the Lighting, and Leper Messiah, so whenever you headbang, think of Dave.

He’s always been a jerkwad, but you have to remember where he’s coming from, he was basically kicked out without warning. Having said that, James comes of as a good guy, I met him a few times, he’s comes off as a caring family man, Kirk is goofy as shit, and well lars, he’s a douchebag to put it lightly.

Listen to Lucertia, and you’ll know what hard rhythm playing is, compared to Metallica’s rhyhtms, no question. Megadeth was always more musically skilled, Poland was a Jazz Player, and Kirk well, he’s not that good skill wise, but he knows how to make hooks with his leads, although he’s no Marty Friedman.

/end rant

I really can’t pick one over the other. Both bands have always kicked ass in my eye. I have a couple of cd’s from both always in my changer in my truck. To me they are one in the same.

Sorry, I had to clear that up.

I really don’t understand the obsession with putting vs for everything. Hell, it even appears in adult videos. It is starting to get ridiculous.

It is music, not an MMA fight, boxing or whatever.

Why choose? I like them both. In fact, I also like dozens of other bands.

As for their personal lives, hairstyles, political opinions, what car they drive or soap they use, I couldn’t care less. To me, they’re musicians, not life shaping gurus.

Metallica? Those guys are done! Kill 'em all!

MEGADETH!!! Love the old Metallica tho… and yeah it’s a fact that Metallica kept a lot of Mustaine’s ideas. He told the not to use his songs but they still did

Love Metallica 1982-1991. I think of Metallica as two distinct bands: Metallica 1982-1991, and Metallica Sellouts 1995-current.

I’m a huge “old school Metallica” fan…like someone else posted 91 and back. I’ve honestly spent very little time listening to Megadeath…I will be downloading songs pronto.

I like all Metallica, from Kill’em All to St. Anger.

Sell out this, that, blah blah. They make good music. I don’t care if they cut their fuckin hair, the day I give two shits about what a rock star looks like is the day I slam my dick in a door.

Unles it’s Shakira or Beyonce. I love those two.

Megadeth never did it for me, don’t know why, maybe too melodic or not fast or heavy enough, just never held a candle to old Metallica for me. Iced Earth never really won me over either, and everyone raves about them.

Everything including and after the Black Album wasn’t the same. Good radio hard rock, but not metal.

Metallica was good up to Master of Puppets (sorry…the black album isn’t THAT good, especially when compared to MoP and I just find Justice boring). But I cannot stand Megadeth. Maybe it’s Dave Mustaine and his attitude, maybe it’s the song “sweating bullets” or maybe it’s the shitty album titles but it’s probably just because their music doesn’t do it for me.

My vote is for Metallica, even though they stopped being good a while ago.

Actually I think the OP isn’t so much pitting them against one another musically, it’s more what they do for the fans right?

Being a fellow Aussie I have to say Megadeth have treated us very well over the past few years. I think they’ve been here the past 3 years where Metallica has been here twice in the last decade.

I look forward to Metallica returning more than I do Megadeth, but Mustaine has been way better to Australian fans. Obviously they don’t make much money coming over here in comparison to Europe or the US but we are still fans that buy their stuff. Maybe a few downloads here and there too. LOL
