Metallica - Death Magnetic

I can’t comment just yet. My comp is so slow. I would just like to stick up for metallica and suggest that for them to play whatever sound you loved when you first heard them for the rest of their lives would be horribly boring. Even though i have not been a fan of the last few albums, i give them credit for trying new things and evolving. You don’t get better by repeating what you have always done, and you certainly have to make mistakes.

The problem is not metallica. Its their fans. Who just want to listen to their golden oldies, relive their teens. “Man, everything else sucks! you shoulda heard metallica back in 1988!!!”

Seriously though…when I first heard they were making another album the first thing that flashed through my head was “why god, why?” Looking at what you guys have said and what I saw over at Rolling Stone makes me feel a little bit better about it.

Listen to it. I was pretty much in the same boat you are in before I heard it. This was your life has some of the coolest guitar riffs I have ever heard.

XM radio channel 51 is now the all Metallica channel, they are going to play the entire album tonight beginning at 8p central.

I’m really enjoying this album. There’s more than enough of the “80’s Metallica” vibe to make me happy.

It’s certainly their best work since the Black Album… maybe better than that one too. That’s one CD I’m definitely picking up as soon as it hits the stores.

The sound is much better than on St.Hangar. The drums still sound a bit tinny; but I’m wondering if that’s not due to the 90’s induced fab of mixing every CD so that they’re as loud as possible. That might have made your song stick out on the radio (at least, before everyone else started doing it), but you lose a lot of nuance from the sound. Very hard to appreciate the details when you’re being beaten over the head with a wall of sound.

By the way, I also caught their video for “The Day that Never Comes” and it’s very good. Very emotional images.

Fave track: Initially, it was “All Nightmare Long”, but I’ve been listening a lot to the 10 minutes instrumental “Suicide & Redemption”… it’s very hard to pick just a few.

Other thrash bands:

Exodus was very good. I kinda lost track of them somewhere in the 90s… One band I listened to a lot when I was younger was Annihilator. They had super fast riffs and catchy lyrics. There was also an album by Forbidden, “Twist Into Form” that I quite enjoyed, although most of my metal listening friends thought it was crap. Of course, the rest of the big four: Anthrax, Slayer and Megadeth… I also remember Testament being very popular, but I never could get into them.

I swear I am the only person I know that just loved the raw production from St. Anger. I thought the songs were great, gritty and a welcome change from the shit they put out in the 90’s.

You aren’t the only one. I remember telling a friend that I liked the drum sound and he goes, “It sounds like he’s hitting trash can in a hangar.” I just liked all the overtones and how raw it sounded.
Ditto. I actually think St Anger is great. Sure it’s no Kill em All or Masters but I can enjoy it for its own sake.

One one hand I agree with you and on the other I think you’re off your rocker.

I am certainly a fan of a band, any band but certainly Metallica, changing and evolving its sound or its direction. I liked Black album and Load for those reasons, even though a crapload of Metallica fans hated Load’s guts.

But, there’s a threshold at which you throw away everything that made you great and become horrible. It ceases to become a new direction or an evolution or a new sound and becomes trash; you piss on your legacy. That was TATSNBN. In fact, I would place it before then at somewhere between Reload and there.

As far as other thrash bands–Megadeth and Testament are two of my favs.
Megadeth is great, however mustaine’s voice was never meant to be in a thrash band. Compare megadeth to slayer or old metallica. Much closer to a rock vocalist, like how james is now. Not that that is bad or anything, but to me thrash vocals are heavy and and raspy and throaty at he same time.

My $0.02

Get mustaine back in 'Tallica, double lead guitar a’la judas priest. AWESOME

So long as a microphone NEVER lands in front of him, fine by me. Actually, Hetfield is really a very good lead guitarist as well. He’s had his share over the years…

I would prefer it if James did play the solos. If you took Kirk’s wah pedal away from him I don’t think he can play a guitar.

The more I listen to this album, the more I dig it.

I think it has elements of every album they’ve ever produced.

Yes, even Load and Reload.

This seems like an amalgamation of some of their best stuff, with a little bit of the elements Metallica “purists” may not like.

I think James’ voice dictates a lot of how the songs are written nowadays, with the traditional rock and roll style and chorus, so its definitely not the thrash of old; however, this is damn good music none the less.

And for all the Unforgiven III haters - that song just pushed me into a new deadlift PR. I can’t get enough of it!

IN-teresting.

I am looking forward to this album. For better or worse.

You mean… can’t play guitar anymore. He used to kick ass before the Black Album Wah came out.

And yeah, he rips some good solos without a wah here too.

what do you mean about a microphone?
i talk in one everyday
what do you mean i have a shitty vocal system?
i hit a note when I have to
What do you mean I can’t make one on time
I got somethin’ better to do
And, what do you mean I don’t have to sound shrill?
Why do you think I smoke?

If there’s a new way,
I’ll be the first in line
But…it better work this time

Saw them in '86 (with Cliff) open for that idiot Ozzie. They were awesome.
I stopped caring after the black album.

But I gotta admit, I’m interested in hearing the new stuff… IF it’s a hark back to the days of old.
My son asks, “Did they grow their hair back, too?”

lol

If we add the comments from the recent Slipknot thread, we can deduce that:

Trujillo walks funny and brings nothing much bass-wise.

Hetfield has no voice left and little writing ability when sober.

Ulrich fucks up on the drums a lot.

Hammet can’t play and his solos are mostly wah-wahs.

Damn, no wonder they suck.

Over time many of the best bands have taken chances and made departures from their earlier sounds. I think the key is to retain the soul of the music no matter how differently you decide to dress it up.

Somewhere along the line, Metallica had a downright collective band out of body experience and they were all wearing dresses.

Now perhaps they have seen the light at the end of the tunnel, and the metal gods have decided there is still a chance for redemption, back to earth they fall…

To rock or not to rock. That is the question.
