So, I drive to my hometown to visit family today. 8 hour drive and I get there for dinner. Have steak and potatoes. Decide to go to the local gym. It’s owned by former Mr. America and Mr. Universe Joe DeAngelis (www.joedeangelis.com). I’ve seen him in there before but never bothered him. I train at this gym once or twice a year when I visit.
So I walk in and the girls at the desk start kidding around with me (I’m tired, not with it, back hurts, and not thinking clearly). One tells me about this contest they’re doing. Do a lift or lifts and get your name up on the board. YOu can do bench and/or dead and/or squat and/or “odd lift” (olympic lift, curl, etc). The only rule is that it has to be competition form and Joe is the judge. We start talking and he says keep ass on bench, touch chest.
I say OK, why not
I end up going for 390 and MISSED. Some of the local guys start getting excited saying you’re gonna do that again!! GET MAD!! lol.. so now I have a little crowd going. I try 390 again and it’s a grinder, but I get it!!! (+5 PR).
Got my name on the board and a pic with Joe! Real nice guy. He tells me I should compete-- do a PL and a bodybuilding show. Says I have great calves… LMFAO!!! (This actually made my night. I told him that coming from him that humbles me and that it meant A LOT).
I picked his brain a bit about training and especially training “after 35”. I guess the point is that these are the kinds of situations that you have to embrace and ask guys about training. The forums are great, but it’s nothing like having a big guy and champion standing in front of you giving you personal advice.
On a related note, this picture doesn’t do Joe justice. He’s fucking HUGE. His arms dwarf mine and he’s got to be like a foot wider than me. He turned into the camera and it doesn’t quite capture his width. Awesome guy.
yeah, seriously…I had no idea what steely looks like and I wasn’t even sure who was who in the pic. Standing next to a former Mr. America, that’s quite a compliment.
Very cool that you got to chat with the man. Unless I’m mistaken, I think he got into physique photography for a few magazines after his competitive hay-days.
And yes, Steely, you are definitely looking swole these days. Just accept it -lol
