Met A Former Mr. Universe/America

Thank you for kind words everyone.

Sorry for the delayed response-- I’ve been driving around past couple days trying to visit family before I have to head home.

I just want to reiterate that the guy I’m standing next to makes me feel anorexic. I think I just happen to have good lighting and camera angle in the picture because Joe is a freaking tank. Very humbling standing next to him. I’d just got done training and he’s standing there cold and still huge and vascular!!

The picture does not capture how HUGE this guy’s back is. He’s an impressive guy-- check out his site and pics when he was competing. I remember seeing him in mags but I never realized he was from essentially my home town.

He definitely lit the fire for me to try to turn it up a notch. He assured me that I can still grow-- diet, training, and consistency.

Steely, anyone making fun of you for body fat needs to take a look at the progress you’ve made. Those arms got serious.
HA! I’m really holding my gut in

Thanks for that-- that really means a lot coming from you. I’ll never have arms that are ‘big enough’…

I like that no one really gives a shit about “that other dude” in the pic.

This thread IS about Steely’s GREAT progress.
HAAA!!! “That other dude” is impressive and a pretty good motivator!!
SSC wrote:
Nice, man. Very cool! Don’t be afraid to toot your horn a little here, you’re looking pretty big compared to that guy, you should be happy about that.

I’m pretty jelly, to be perfect honest.
Thanks man! I didn’t mean to draw any physique attention, I just thought it was a cool little experience and that I got to talk with and pick the brain of guy who won a couple major comps!

Don’t be jelly dude, your story and progress are pretty epic!!
heavythrower wrote:
fuuuuck steely, how much do you weigh now?
I’m a chubby 260!!

Too fat to be a bodybuilder and too weak to be a powerlifter
Professor X wrote:
What the fuck has Steely been eating?
I’ve been doing the “Professor X Diet”–> Cheeseburgers 24/7.

Steak, eggs, potatoes, rotisserie chickens, and anything else!

Seriously, X, you are one of the people who have constantly stressed that you have to eat to grow. It’s the absolute truth. Eat, train, assess, adjust.

Training hard is a given. The diet is the dealbreaker. Diet is right, you grow. If it’s wrong, you don’t grow or you just get fat.

No, really, steak and cheeseburgers
Professor X wrote:
The fact that Steely apparently didn’t know he held his own in that pic stands out.
HA! I honestly didn’t even look at the picture in that light. I just thought it was cool to get a pic with him.

Seriously, standing next to guys like this is inspirational because they’re just huge thick dudes. Joe’s arms and back are unreal.

I’m nowhere even near his league for sure, although I’m motivated to turn it up to get there for sure!

Can this just become a SteelyD, How Do You Train thread?
LOL-- thanks! I’m so totally unworthy of a “How I Train Thread”. Best to listen to guys like PX, Tankman, Synergy, MarauderMeat, PeteS, and a few other monsters in these forums and guys like Stu who are just zen-like with their training, diet, and philosophy.

If anyone is interested, I keep a log in “Over35” that’s captured my training for the past 3 or 4 years when I started my ‘bulk’. I’ve logged probably 3/4 of my training there as well as other experiences, trials, and tribulations that have affected training and progress.

Very cool that you got to chat with the man. Unless I’m mistaken, I think he got into physique photography for a few magazines after his competitive hay-days.

And yes, Steely, you are definitely looking swole these days. Just accept it -lol

S
Thanks, Stu!

I’m not sure what he did after competing. He’s owned this gym in south jersey for about 5 years or so. I know he was out west for awhile.

HAHA! I wish!

Follow up-- this was the meal I had about an hour before I lifted that day. My folks always hook me up with some strips and potatoes (and meatballs, and sausage, and frittatas, and…)

Dude, you’ve got pretty swole, there’s no denying it!

There’s a lot to be learned from Steely’s training logs. What stands out most next to his dedication is his consistency. And being on the road somehow doesn’t hamper his progress. Damn, there’s definitely a pattern …

Anacondas, not the protocol, the snake.

You look great!

And don’t worry about sucking in the gut. We all do it. Joe was doing it in the pic too.

It’s just good to see progress. Some of the people here act like muscular gains are only relevant if in contest shape. You’ve done more than most here physically, I’m sure.

For real. I would have to wait 2 hours after something like that since I hate lifting “bloated”. I waste time that way. I wish I could head out the door right after a big meal.

Steely you are way too modest. I’ve been following your progress and you’ve made unbelieveable progress. You just need to take the plunge and compete in something now. You have a great physique and strength to just be content being another guy that just lifts weights. I wouldn’t say that if it wasn’t true my friend.

LOL… Yeah, I don’t normally eat like that before training. I’d literally just gotten out of the car after an 8 hour drive and snacking on nuts and store bought ready-to-drink protein shakes.

Training was almost an afterthought that day. Glad I went!
