Meniscus Tear

just found out my knee is messed up because a tear from heavy lifting. Any one had this? Just simple therapy or surgery involved? I know what you guys are thinking "ASK YOUR DOCTOR STUPID " but he isnt in today, and i want to know now. Its the lateral meniscus thats torn.

just ended my PT for the same injury however iw as playing handball when it happened… they gave me an option of surgery or cortizone shots every so often … i chose the surgery now i just started runnning at full swing 5 weeks out of surgery. go hard in pt man be back soon

so would surgery be best option if given? And about 5 week recovery cause i need to get back in the weightroom and hit the squats and football season is coming up.

consult with your doctor and go by him. all i know is that a meniscus is avascular which means it cant heal on its own… talk ot the docs.

i know consult a doctor but does that mean for sure surgery?

Get surgery. My doctor reccomended surgery for all young athletes or anyone active.

how long would you think the recovery period would be? im a heavy guy so im guessing it would be much longer than someone that weighs less

Surgery is an invasive procedure so avoid it unless your tear is actually unable to heal by itself and remain painful.

Surgery is big money for surgeon but not necessarily the best thing for the patient.

Normally I would agree with you Franck but with a meniscus tear it depends on a number of factors, namely WHERE the tear exactly took place. The outer and inner sections of the menisci (Red Red and Red White) are partially vascular and more likely to heal with surgical repair. The innermost part (White White) if damage usually requires removal which will put you at risk for athritis later in life.

A repair will typically be the better option for anything but the most minor tears, but your recovery will be longer (anywheres between 2 weeks to 3 months, whole lot of variables lol).

its outer i believe but from what i read it seems outer, thanks alot guys your giving alot of useful info and its all going to lead to a right decision and to ease on what about to come.

like i said, i went the surgery and today was first day squatting 5 weeks

GREAT point. I honestly dont know a damn thing about the other tears, but having torn my white-white part, there’s only a few pointers i can give you:

Stretch often. oddly enough, this seems to help me.
If it only hurts, just get over it. pain wont hurt you.
If it locks up AND hurts, stop what youre doing for a while, you dont wanna make it worse.

Everybody has given some great advice so far. It really depends on the severity of the tear.

I tore the lateral meniscus in my left knee about 5 years ago. Fortunately for me, it was minor and I was given the option to have surgery or let it go and see how it feels. I chose to let it go since my doctor told me I was unlikely to injure it further. I can honestly say that I’ve barely had any problems with it. It does flare up occasionally but its manageable and I’m not limited in my training at all. And so far, I’ve haven’t done anymore damage to it.

Just my experience. Good luck with whatever you decide.

ehsbeast, did this meniscus tear happen while you were doing one of DeFranco’s workouts at his facility?

no no no i was only in his competition i dont work out with him y u ask

If your playing football you may want to opt for surgery. In the end not having surgery and just taking extra care of your knee in the long run would be better, but for trying to stay competitive with sports your better off with surgery.

Your going to be constantly putting heavy demands on your knee playing football, you’ll need all the protection you can get even if it just a stitched meniscus.

In most cases surgery is the way to go, because most meniscus tears will not heal on their own. I am an old guy and I have had two surgeries in the last two year for meniscus tears.

I am 46 yrs old and recovery has been slow and hard, but stretching does help alot, and I also see an ART doctor, who has helped out huge.

Best of luck.

If i could afford surgery i would have had it done on my knees a while ago. but I’m really feeling better after i may have torn my meniscus without any surgery just lots of time .

I overdid my training and really jacked my knees up to the point it throbbed all the time.(never had an mri but I REALLY do believe it was the meniscus after all the months of research) sharp pain i could’nt even bend it or straighten it without pain.

My point is get some crutches ( which i should have done) and USE the suckers. you being heavy is not going to help your knee, the crutches will lighten the load. Lose the ego and save the knee. Any time you are not resting on a bed walk with crutches. Ice them whenever you are flaring up and rest them.

when the time comes rehab do biking, leg machines, resistance bands high rep low weight(or ‘no’ weight) squats. Ice right after a workouts. It took my knees 10 months but I hardly feel them.
note: I rarely followed my own advice which is probaly why it took so long.

I’m noticing the dates are pre 2006. so i hope you are healed and this can help out somebody else.

also i’m back to running track. =)
good luck everyone. chronic pain sucks
