Men are Funnier than Women

while I know that it’s almost always men that make me laugh and I can’t think of any females off the top of my head (yeah, wanda sykes) who do stand-up well, I really don’t think it’s because women are genetically programmed NOT to be funny.

I am a hundred times funnier when I’m drunk cause my guard is down and I like making people laugh. I’m sarcastic, bitter and cynical at times and those are not traits that go over as well in women. We are supposed to lighten the atmosphere, and I don’t mean with fart jokes.

We are supposed to make OTHER people, including you boys, feel good about themselves. We are not supposed to be drawing attention to OURSELVES. Think of all the attention funny people command. Are most women comfortable with that attention?

Men are supposed to take up space, women are supposed to recede. Think of big fat guys who can get all the puss they want and then some. That’s power. Doesn’t work that way for fat women.

I know it seems like I’m rambling, but I think all this plays into why there aren’t very many funny women.

Men aren’t funny as a rule. Let’s not forget that 9 out of 10 people posting on this thread are probably unfunny as hell on a day to day basis.

Arguing that men are more likely than women to be geniuses still doesn’t make you one.

Not only unfunny, but unintelligent. Good on you to stake a claim on all of man and their accomplishments, and feel some part of it, but youre not. Women may not hit the mark in being universally ‘funny’,its true, I think women are painfully unfunny and stupid in most cases. BUT… you can pull your superior fingers out of your asses already, because mankind doesnt translate to YOU in your fucking room being a total social retard idiot. You sir, do not get claim to everything done by your sex. I see you .

Here’s another unfunny one.

Oh dear baretta… you misogynist …ho hum. Who cares about you. Honestly… who cares …you could die in a ditch…and who gives a fuck. Nobody. Now thats funny.
I think you are putting your crazy pills in the wrong hole.

What do expect from a flaming cock tease?

Where is all of this hatred coming from?

Women of America…THIS is why you should breast feed and hug your children!
I was a breastfed and lovely child. My son, will be the leader of all of you. From strong women strong men come.

Other than Wanda Sykes, the only female comic I can think of off the top of my head that made me laugh was Wendy Liebman, but I haven’t seen or heard from her in years.

As my Grandpa used to say: Women are only good at one thing and half the time they’re not good at that either.

In a thread about men being funnier, Seinfeld could have definitely been left out.

Females just aren’t good at stand up. There are many comedic actresses - but standup is a totally different gig.

IMO, the rule still applies. For every funny actress, most of us could probably name five funny actors (many of whom are the same stand up comics). You could say that intrinsic ability is the source, but I believe the mentally crippling effects of the “romantic comedy” are also responsible.

It’s like affirmative action for comedic actresses, ensuring that actresses like Meg Ryan, Kate Hudson, and Ashley Judd have mammoth acting careers but never actually do anything funny.

Kinda funny that extending title nine to the mic is a joke in-and-of itself.
I don’t agree with that one. I agree with Rainjack that there are just as many funny ACTRESSES as actors. [But not female standup comedians compared to male ones].

The women you name are not comedic actressses at all. And they’re not supposed to be. I do agree that romantic ‘comedies’ has a lot to do with it. Those named women star in mostly romantic comedies, and to the extent this genre of movies is funny at all [and I think they rarely are], they are funny because of the situations the characters are involved in.

And not because of the comedic talents of the stars, be they male or female. I can think of almost no men in these kind of movies who are funny either. Kevin James in Hutch may be a borderline exception, but to the extent he was funny, it was still mostly because of what HAPPENED to his fat, nerdy character and not because of him actually being funny, witty, or sarcastic in any way.

I’ve known several extremely funny women in real life. But they wouldn’t be necessarily be described as ‘feminine’ or ‘loveable’. But they’re ever bit as funny as men-not really in a standup way. But they’re funny, clever, and witty. Just the way they view the world and the things that come out of their mouth, you crack up being around them. It includes dirty and raunchy jokes but mostly not.

Women still get shafted in movies, especially comedies. In dramatic roles, it’s gotten a lot better. But in comedies, women are usually relegated to the ‘hot chick’ or a love interest.

So we all agree:

SARA SILVERMAN IS NOT FUNNY!!

Any of you considered that the male sense of humor may be different from the female sense of humor? That perhaps humor could be shaped by cultural roles?

Gee, if that were true, different cultures would find different things funny. God, what a crazy thought. Extrapolating on that, different groups within a culture might also find different things amusing.

I’m way off the regression line now. This is crazy talk.

Yes, it is, because if it were just about a difference of “female culture”, there would still be enough women in the world to keep it marketable. There is a reason there aren’t many well known truly funny women comedians. That reason is there aren’t enough people who find their humor…amusing.

To go even further, there is a large difference in culture associated with race in this country. However, the comics who are able to become UNIVERSALLY FUNNY are the ones who make it big, even if they still focus in on their own “culture”.

Since, regardless of culture, more men seem to own the field of comedy, you can’t make some judgement that we just aren’t noticing the “female culture”. Maybe the female comedians aren’t realizing that their shit isn’t universally funny.

Seriously? I’m counting male and female comedians who both acted and did standup.

I’d go down my list and the ratio of “Dick Van Dyke/Jackie Gleason/Milton Berle” to “Lucille Balls” or “John Belushi/John Candy/Dan Akroyd/Harold Ramis/Bill Murray…” to “Gilda Radner” or “Peter Boyle/Gene Hackman/Marty Feldman” to “Madeline Kahn” is close to 5:1. Is there some laundry list of female comedic actresses I’m missing (that doesn’t have a male counterpart)?

You disagree with me and then clearly illustrate almost every point I was making, it’s the highest paying role for a female actress, but they’re not comedic actresses. They’re strictly there for looks. Comedic men on the other hand do one or two movies in spite of their looks and then bail on the entire genre. I do disagree with your assertion that the men aren’t funny either, the male role quite often spans the romantic and comedic (Jack Black, Bill Murray, Adam Sandler, Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, Will Smith) whereas the female role is relegated strictly to the romantic. Lastly, ask a female if Julia Roberts or Meg Ryan is funny. I bet the % yes might surprise you.

I believe you meant In, not From.

I’m surprised Lampinelli isn’t getting more love in this thread. I think she’s pretty damn funny. I have literally laughed out loud watching her routines all by myself. Not an easy thing to make me do. On a related note, why are things funnier when you’re in a group as opposed to alone? Somebody should do a study.

She’s funny but her formula gets tedious after a while.

I’ll go out on limb here and say that I’ve seen some funny stuff out of Sarah Silverman. Her appearance on “The Aristocrats” comes to mind. I haven’t seen her sitcom, but I don’t see how anyone could find the idea of a show with her subject to standards and practices promising. This is a problem though that many comedians attempting to crossover encounter. Very few comedians are inherently funny people. Most have their success driven by their material.

Will Ferrell is slowly becoming one of the funnier people in movies even though when interviewed he doesn’t seem to be all that funny.

How dare you…

I watched Sarah Silverman do stand up the other day. She’s not funny.
