Here’s a comparable analogy:
What do you think would happen to a group of people in America who founded an organization with the stated aim of wiping out Japan through violent means? Since there’s no widespread resentment towards Japan in this country, they’d probably get thrown in jail. On the other hand, an organization hoping to overthrow Iran’s government might be safe from interference, for opposite but corresponding reasons.
Relativism has its uses, in both science and politics. I have just demonstrated its effect in the latter area.
Do you think that in Europe and America, at this very point in time, there exist no underground organizations with violent goals? I’m talking about any and all criminal groups, not necessarily terrorist ones. Another way to put it would be, are there no violent and crazy people anywhere in the world besides the Middle East?
If that is not the case, then scientific inquiry would lead you to ask what is the difference in the nature of the threat posed by the domestic wacko’s versus the ones in the Middle East. Why is our army deployed over there, instead of over here?

Wars and extended occupations bring about the kinds of socio-economic conditions that give rise to political extremism. There are other factors at play, too - of course - some of which are inherent to Muslim societies, such as their cultural trait of polygamy, which denies sexual gratification to young, frustrated males from poor backgrounds. These individuals form the standard criminal profile for a suicide bomber.
Lastly, there is the consideration of what course of action is best suited to the present situation. It is feasible to suggest that “we’re in too deep” in the ME to pull out immediately. However, what’s not feasible is the notion that widespread resentment of American occupation of the ME had little or nothing to do with creating the present situation. Any current proposal must acknowledge the weight of that assertion, no matter where its ultimate recommendation lies: be it in an immediate withdrawl or not.
