Meathead Camaraderie

Yeah I have noticed in more than one gym the fact that birds of a feather flock together, I suppose its natural to some degree and it does reflect a little on the hierachy in gyms. It’s a lifestyle…and the peopl who live it know what it takes to maintain it.

Too many times to count I get a head nod or start speaking to someone just because we notice we both lift seriously.
Even from the big and lean group X? Well good for you it seems all is not lost in our quest for camaraderie

n.

 1. The belief that certain persons or members of certain classes or groups deserve favored treatment by virtue of their perceived superiority, as in intellect, social status, or financial resources.

As far as camaraderie goes, I’ve definitely seen some great supportive folks on here, this is despite the Sh-t-Storm threads that have become the norm these last several years. In at least as much as you can feel supported from an online forum, it’s always worked for me. That’s why I always enjoyed detailing my own experiences, and went out of my way to answer every PM, or thread questions I’ve gotten. If I want people to support me, I gotta support them. That goes for people who do not share my personal beliefs or goals, as well as those who do but have yet to achieve similar levels of accomplishments as mine.

To the idea that all serious people are elitist: No need to mix words, I think that’s a complete load of pompous crap. If the dictionary definition of the word is to be believed, than I should be running around letting everyone know how awesome I am every time I add to a thread. People who disagree with me must be wrong, because damnit, I’m the Mighty Stu. If you get out of line, or heaven forbid you start getting more attention than I do in your threads, then I’m coming in to shift the topic to me… so yeah, I kinda disagree with that idea. I’ve enjoyed online friendships with many folks from this site, and even met a fairly good amount of them in real life to hang out and train. At no time do I ever entertain the idea that I deserve special treatment for any reason, especially something as silly as being a decent bodybuilder.

Good post/points.
I do tend to only solicit advice from people that have attained a certain level of development or skill. I don’t just ask any fat slob for diet advice simply because he is at the gym. So being bias or excluding people from my circle of people based on their lack of performance or development is something I find useful. This is perhaps not exclusively elitist by definition, but a vetting process is necessary when dealing with a source of information on a subject. Some may find me not accepting their advice or shunning their suggestions elitist on my part. I think this is the level of elitism that Prof X was suggesting.

This has been one of the primary complaints against you. You have no justification to wine about it until you clean up your own act.

HT has called you out on this very thing several times to no avail.

Bro you don’t represent everyone on this site that doesn’t agree with prox on everything he says. You certainly don’t need to be anyone’s advocate that does have a disagreement with him. But don’t let me interrupt your voyeuristic keyboard masturbation exercises.
Actually I do represent them. I’ve filed a class action suit against PX on behalf of all the aggrieved on this forum.

For real though, I just think it’s hilarious how he talked about the loss of camaraderie due to hiding behind a computer screen when he is constantly called out for talking to people in a manner that he would not use in a face to face conversation.

Yeah, I couldn’t disagree more. You CHOOSE to use “elitist” in such a negative way. The truth is, you won’t be walking up to the guy who never lifts and just sits on the equipment to talk beyond a passing “hello” because you recognize you have little in common.

Please deny this.
I CHOSE to use ‘elitist’ as is its actual meaning. Personally, in all parts of my life, I chat with strangers left and right (sometimes bothers the wife a bit actually). In the gym, I don’t really go over and strike up talks with anyone, I come and do my thing. Sure, I have some random people occasionally approach me with questions, the gym has a nice big photo of me with “WNBF & USBF Pro” on it when you walk in, and you know what? I’m nice and friendly when people do. Sure my mindset isn’t currently what it would be if I were contest prepping, but the point is that I don’t look down on anyone, especially the younger, or skinnier trainers (you know how many people in the gym actually recognized me from this very site? I’m continually surprised myself -lol).

I think that you choose to take a lot of things in a way that most people don’t. So when I express my honest feelings, you can argue, and think I’m full of crap all you want, but if you’re truly incapable of ‘getting it’, then all the arguing and poop throwing people do on here won’t ever change matters.

Best bro post, bro.

Man A is 40lbs over weight and never competed. He starts to spout off all the information that he learned from Google about contest dieting. Do you get out your pen and pencil and start taking notes for your next show prep?

Man B has coached several people in competitions and has many people who have placed well. He himself has competed and knows what it is like prepping for a show. He provides you with a diet plan.

Who’s plan are you more likely to ignore? The plan that man A provided may be spot on, but by virtue of no experience and general appearance I will chose to ignore all advice and find a different source that I can verify. Does this make me an elitist?
The Mighty Stu wrote:

Good on you.

It seems that allowed you to completely miss the point.

Yes, i would say most who take this to an exreme level see what they do in a light rthat causes them to gravitate towards those who push as hard as they do…and avoid those who do not.

If this is “negative” to you something is wrong.

You know what if I ever was to cross the ocean and go into both your ( Stu ) and X’s gyms I would be wary as fuck of striking up a conversation with X and would have no hope in hell of arriving at any camaraderie with all of the bigger or more developed guys who seem to know each other. But I just know that I could approach you Stu and ask all the questions I need to ask. Ironic really as you would assume the much more accomplished guy would be less approachable. Camaraderie.

lol. because I am the one that is having trouble understanding what was meant by elitist… those that are pretending seem to be ignoring my post but addressing Prof X??? Weird… I really don’t know how he has the endurance for this shit. I find it exhausting, and thankfully I have very little time to actually participate.

If you can reach just one person…

Yea I mean it’s a cool feeling when you’re acknowledged as someone who is “serious”. I don’t look like much physique wise but am known as that guy who’s always grinding out heavy deadlifts, so I get the head nod of acknowledgement from the guy who’s “aesthetic” doing pump work. That mutual level of respect is cool and it’s nice to know you can ask someone reliable for a spot or just shoot the shit about training.
It isn’t always about being as big as the biggest guys in the gym. I see many guys I try to go out of my way to point out progress on because I see how hard they work…an many of them are making great progress.

They are part of the same group.
That’s definitely cool and I’m sure they appreciate hearing that.

But this really isn’t about who’s advice you would take though.

Look at the key words in the OP-

“all of the bigger or more developed guys”

“smaller or less developed”

All the good attributes have been bestowed upon the first group while the second group has received the negative attributes. Why is that? We’ve seen it before for sure.

Are there big developed guys in the gym that are dicks with attitudes? Sure. Just like some small under developed guys are the same way.

Are there smaller less developed guys at the gym that are serious and goal driven that behave how the “big” guys in the OP were described? Sure are.

And what about this sentence: "There is a whole new breed of gym goer who has no clue about gym ettiquette and some even seem to dispise those who worked to stand out from the norm. " Do we really see small dudes in the gym that ACTUALLY despise big guys? Really? C’mon. This sentence right here seals it for me as to what the OP was really about.

And the last sentence “How do we maintain that camaraderie in a public forum when it comes so easily face to face…and is lost so quickly once behind a computer screen?” Apparently according to the OP, both types of people exist in the gym as well as the internet. So why ask specifically about those on the internet?

Thinly veiled attempt with enough back-pedaling built in for deniability. At least that’s how I see it. Just more of the same, different thread.

It happens in every thread. And new threads are created for the purpose of continuing it, while bitching about the forum quality.

Yeah we saw what it was about right from the the off it was an OH FUCK NOT AGAIN POST

weird thread this.

If you want to be accepted into the camaraderie in your gym, put your weights back after you use them, work hard and don’t be a dick.

if you want there to be camaraderie on a forum like this, then respect people’s views and don’t be a dick.

what is there left to say?
