That’s really the only lift he has over him.

Well the only three lifts that matter are the squat, bench, and dead. Johnnie is not a good squatter but I think that Matt and he bench very similarly. Johnnie and both Matt are around 500 as their best raw benches I believe. So Matt is a better squatter, Johnnie is a better deadlifter, and they are fairly equal on the bench so it’s a bit of a push.
Neither of them can carry Stan Efferding’s jock in terms of powerlifting strength.

Isn’t Matt in a much lighter weightclass than those two?
stan is 275lb class
matt has competed in 220 242 and 275
johnnie has competed in 242 and 275 i believe
Johnnie used to compete in the 220’s as well if I’m not mistaken.
Don’t remember if he already pulled 800+ then though.
Matt K has been pretty heavy before, like 260-270, hasn’t he? Outside of competition/meets I mean.
Or at least I think I read that in his log years ago…
johnnie deadlifted:
814lbs at 216lbs in 2001
804lbs at 244lbs in 2004
760lbs at 275lbs in 2008
814lb at … 2009 olympia
matt kroc 220lb
1003lb squat
738lb bench
810lb deadlift
matt kroc 242lb
1014lb squat
705lb bench
783lb deadlift
What are Matt’s raw numbers like? Or did Johnnie compete equipped as well?
814 lb DL at 216lb bodyweight. Shiiit…

I’m trying to figure out how as Jackson’s weight increased his dead dropped. What’s that about? Yes, I’ve heard of the losing leverage thing but that’s pretty wild.

Krocs numbers look the same way. Mass eventually gets in the way of DL setup the way I understand it.

I think it’s more just a question of not having a good day every single time you step on the platform. We don’t know if the lifts they got were easy, but then they took too big a jump, or what. Also, once you get over 800 lbs, you’re probably operating pretty close to your limits. you’ve got to have a lot of things go right to hit 810 or 814, esp at the end of a 3 lift meet, and you dont need a helluva lot to go wrong to hit “only” 93 - 96% of that
just my opinion, obviously

I think the other issue with kroc is that his actual weight isn’t that different between competing at 220 and 242. He was cutting a ton of weight to hit 220.

Johnnie isn’t all that tall is he?
And he pulls conventional. I had one hell of a time getting into conv. position back when I still used to pull that way, especially during the times where my stomach wasn’t totally lean. Then my quads got bigger and yeah. Limb length etc probably influences that as well…
Anyway, I need to have my knees out/legs out of the way.
I can pull full Sumo (but I don’t like that as much, harder on the hips and I tend to forget to lock the knees out for some reason with the heavier weights… Plus my knees don’t quite like it) and practically park my ass on the floor without any rounding in my lower back.
But if I have my knees in front of my traditional style, I can’t even grab the bar losing my arch.
So I pull with a modified sumo stance and my DL has gone up like you wouldn’t believe…
How many of the westside behemoths pull 800+ ?
Last time I checked (okay, that was years ago) most were in the 700’s or so…
Seemed kind of low to me… Shit, such an elite gym and so few DL monsters?
And all those I checked pull (or used to pull) conventional too if I remember right…
I never quite understood that.
If you are on the fat side, or almost fat (or just have a beer gut or whatever), and you can squat a ton with a wide stance (well, fine, equipped, but still they do a lot of work for the posterior chain after all, and probably adductors too), why not pull sumo or semi-sumo instead? So much easier to keep your back arched in any event… Guess I’m missing something there… Maybe it’s that most guys only try all-out sumo and not the semi-style, and don’t like it much?
In the other thread (on semi-sumo style) someone mentioned that that’s the way Coan used to pull… Thought I’d be more popular, ya know?

I’ve actually wondered the same thing. Why wouldn’t more lifters pull sumo?
I just switched to it two weeks ago… so much easier on my back.
Looks like it was USPF Nationals so single ply. He was also 7 weeks out from the Europa show.
Johnnie pulling 760lbs (768???) first attempt
Johnnie’s second attempt 821lbs (not the head slapper)
Johnnie’s 3rd attempt (pulled hammie)
Johnnie putting on the bench shirt
600lbs bench attempt
post meet interview (this is pretty good)
