Skidmark is right - I also train at home and use sawhorses as my safety stops for squatting. Never had to dump the bar on them but I’m sure they could handle the weight. From your video, you have a better rack to take the weight from than I do. Mine is seeming really flimsy and I don’t really want to load much more on it as a squat rack.

Take a look at the videos in my log and you’ll get an idea of the sawhorse setup.

The rack is built into my weight bench. The crutches are long enough so that you can set them at squat rack height (also reversible, have handles for doing dips, and has oly and normal width uprights into which to lock the crutches).

What kind of sawhorses are they? Don’t look like the old-fashioned 2x4 type.

They are fancy foldable plastic kind. Hold plenty of weight and fold up into a 4 inch square by the length of the top piece.

My rack is also part of the weight bench - a much flimsier bench than yours. But, hey for $70 I got the bench and a smaller weight set with DB handles that I’m using as well.

I think I got my bench for about $150. They also have a power cage that is now priced at about $350

I’d probably skip all of the add-ons.

Maybe I’ll go to Lowe’s and check out the saw horses!

I like that one! I’ve been shopping for a while now and that is one of the wider ones which is really nice for that price. I keep hoping I’ll find a deal on Craigslist but no luck yet.

Yukon makes really good stuff for being midrange equipment. People who bother to buy them don’t generally give them up easily.

Hey welcome to the old and not old folks home.

Ive been rack free for almost two years, til I joined a second gym, there is a TON of stuff you can contrive to squat out of
but its not fun

have you thought of squat stands?
kmc

Lowes has these for about $30 for the pair

http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=161034-82673-161034

Says they can handle 1000 lbs for the pair, but doesn’t say how tall they are. Probably a little too high for my bench, and a little too low for my squat.

First Day of Angry Bovine Training:

4/18/09 Mesocycle #1/Microcycle #3/Session #2
A1 Flat BB Bench 180# 3x3
A2 T-Bar Row 190# 3x3
B1 Shoulder Press 100# 5x5
B2 1 Leg Calf Raise 60# 5x8
C Squat 200# 3x3
D Deadlift (from stands - 3") 230# 5x5
E1 Chins 0# 5x5
E2 Dips 0# 5x5

Plan: Alternate 2 sessions

Session A
A1 Flat BB Bench 5x5
A2 T-Bar Row 190# 5x5
B1 Shoulder Press 3x3
B2 1 Leg Calf Raise 3x8
C Squat 200# 5x5
D Deadlift (from stands - 3")3x3
E1 Chins 3x5
E2 Dips 3x5

Session B
A1 Flat BB Bench 3x3
A2 T-Bar Row 3x3
B1 Shoulder Press 5x5
B2 1 Leg Calf Raise 5x8
C Squat 3x3
D Deadlift (from stands - 3") 5x5
E1 Chins 5x5
E2 Dips 5x5

3x3 sets will be heavier. Try to increase 2.5 to 5 lbs per week.

Goals are approx 20% increases in 5x5 on basic lifts.

            Current/Goal

Bench 170/200
T-Bar 180/210
Squat 190/230
Dead 230/270
Shoulder press 100/120

I’m throwing in the Chins and Dips for “a little extra”, and because it’ll give me some biceps triceps work at the same time as a little extra chest and back work from a different angle. No specific progression plans on them.

Plan is unabashedly based on Mad Cow. Pick a few basic, compound lifts, progress the weight with good form, get stronger, build muscle, never get sand kicked in my face at the beach again!

Thank you for the welcome!

Check my pics and videos out on my profile page. I have a bench that doubles as a squat rack, but what I don’t have is protection. I’ve been getting by with “unsafe squatting and benching” for too long now! Also I’m starting a program where I’ll be pushing some long standing limits. I’d like to have something under the bar on the squat and bench - just in case.

When I had neither power rack, squat rack nor stands, I did floor presses and anderson squats off of cinder blocks. When I got my squat stands I used cinder blocks as catchers. I adjusted my bench with boards and halfcinders underneath when I got the squat rack.

You can make it work and be safe with a little ingenuity.

I’ve done the “Angry Bovine 5x5” a couple times-- it works. My biggest mistake was not eating enough either time, although I did make some strength gains.

I did the Intermediate workout (to the letter) making some weight adjustments after a few weeks.

You definitely sleep at night

That’s probably the biggest problem - I’m trying to lose some fat right now. I’ve been doing something along the lines of the anabolic diet, trying to get at least 1.5 g protein per lb lean body weight, but with less fat than suggested (around 40%0. I plan to switch to a carb cycling approach to support the Angry Bovine training, with moderate carbs and about maintenance on training days, and a fairly aggressive low carb, low cal diet on non-training days. We’ll see how it goes.

Thanks for the feedback.

one hour, six minutes

I bought a pair of plastic sawhorses at Lowes today. They are rated at 1000 lbs for the pair. They are the perfect height for protecting the bench press with my bench. The photo shows them with about 300lbs loaded on the bar. I jiggled the bar, and they seem stable. I won’t be anywhere near 300 lbs for quite a while (if ever) so they’ve got me covered on the bench.

I think they’re too low for my squat, since I just can’t get that low due to mobility in the knee. $30 for the pair!

Then, after I get them, my wife says I should go ahead and get the power cage. Oh well, I need a pair of sawhorses anyway!

Make sure you take care of that wife of yours. Sounds like a real gem.

And never say never on the 300 BP.

Did your heart go ‘pitter-patter-pitter-patter’?

It’s awesome when the better half drops a gem like that.

One time my wife said “I’m going to the grocery store with the kids, do you want me to drop you off so you can fish at the river?” (I’m a fly-fishing addict)…

Well, first she asked what I could do with the sawhorses. Then her eyes lit up, and I could just see her calculating the home improvement projects that we (er, I mean I) could use them on. Plus, I think she thinks the power cage would be a great place to hang laundry…

You parlayed saw horses to a power rack
nice job, well played.

kmc

Score!

The rack I just ordered is the regular base version of the Yukon. I am anxiously awaiting its arrival. My quads are not so sure.

I was eying the Powertec, but after the kids enormous backyard play thingy, I couldn’t justify the cost.

As for the wife, I am pretty sure that she won’t think of laundry…something much more naughty.
