Yeah, I’m going to get wraps, no matter what. My hand hurts like hell today from Wednesday. It’s all because I didn’t use hand wraps. I do know what it’s like to punch without gloves/wraps on. I’ve messed around punching heavy bags at friends houses without gloves. We don’t use the thick boxing gloves, but rather the thin gloves that are used for heavy bag work and focus mitt work.
If gloves and wraps are bad, why do boxers always use them? I want my hands to be intact. I’m not looking to go out and fight anyone, so I’m not worried about getting my hands used to hitting without gloves.
JWright,
Boxers use gloves and wraps to protect their hands, and with good reason.
It would be foolish to train regularly without wraps. There’s something to be said for trying to hit stuff bare knuckled, but to do it for any length of time several times a week is just plain stupid.
I apologize O’shea, I mis-interpreted your post. It would be foolish to train without wraps and gloves. I already hurt my hand training without wraps, so I immediately went out and bought a set of 3. Shaking hands hurts like hell now, and it’s my own fault.
O’Shea, Yeah, but Kung Fu dude seemed to think that using wraps and gloves would be a bad idea, so I just wanted to put in another instance of the correct opinion.
Rep - Such a long thread dude, sorry. Kungfudude must be a wild man. My views on wrapping have become less conservative over the yeas, ironically because of injury, not lack of it. Wraps and belts have their place.
JWright I always use wraps when necessary too. My example was the heavy bag but as you by now know sparring can be even tougher on the hands, particularly against novice or unorthodox stylists. I condition mine gently and progressively at home on a punch bag. Better safe than sorry
I find it impossible to masturbate with my left hand. It simply doesn’t work for me. It’s pretty annoying because the left hand isn’t all that good with the mouse either.
JWright-After a while your hands will get used to it. Remember how you felt after your first time i nthe weight room? One point that has been brought up with this discussion on wraps: Don’t try hitting someone in the head with a closed fist. Boxers wrap their hands to protect the little bones from the big bone called a skull. If you’re a big dude, than you can get away with it. But if not, be careful. The other thing that came to mind while I was reading this thread was something I heard a long time ago: A martial art is only as good as its practicioner.
Anyways, I take karate, kickboxing and submission grappling back to back to back. When I get home, I am so exhausted. I eat, and veg out on the couch until bedtime. Last night, I was so tired, I couldn’t even read a book.
It depends on how you go about the conditioning. My approach is not old school (boards n’ bricks) I have had more injuries from lack of proprioception in the wrists and gnerally soft hands. Sledgehammers help the musculature of the hand. I hit a medium bag fairly softly too.
