Mars... Needs... Metal

OK, so there are couple recent “What’s your favorite [music thing]” threads out there.

Here’s the deal-- Martians have landed. They have come to Earth in search of THE epitome of Heavy Metal (they want to breed a whole new breed of headbangers and moshers).

They can only start the experiment with ONE metal album. It must capture the essence of metal and will represent the prototype for future metal.

THREAD RULES:
You can list ONE and ONLY one album (CD whatever) as THE number one, epitome of metal. You may list others if you’re having trouble deciding, but in the end you must post:

1. <Name of Album, Band>

You may debate the merits of several albums, but NO TIES! You may NOT split out sub-genres (ie post one thrash, one hair-metal, one death metal)-- only one. It may be a compilation album or a live album, but it must have been released as such. It need not be your favorite BAND, but THE metal album to beat all metal albums.

WHAT IS YOUR “PERFECT” METAL ALBUM?? (the future of Martian Metal depends on YOU)

  1. “Live After Death”, Iron Maiden
    .
    .
    .
    .
  2. “Vulgar Display of Power”, Pantera
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
  3. “Master of Puppets”, Metallica

This was not easy for me.

Roots, Bloody Roots by Sepultura. All strong tracks.

After I emerged from my seventies rock slumber I found this album. This never leaves my car, I-pod and I have another copy for home. Is that weird?

I’ll just agree about most of the others to follow lol.

Your #1 and #2 are both tops, either one for me could be number 1.

V

“Vulgar Display of Power” Pantera

Close second: “Reign in Blood” Slayer

Also, your picture gives me an idea. Someone really needs to do a Mos Eisley Cantina band metal album.

  1. AEnema - TOOL

  2. Screaming For Vengeance - Judas Priest

  3. Number Of The Beast - Iron Maiden

This will probably change in 5 minutes, though.

Go back and read the thread rules… :stuck_out_tongue:

3: Vulgar Display of Power, Pantera

2: Domination, Morbid Angel

1: Blessed Are The Sick, Morbid Angel

  1. “The Great Southern Trendkill”, Pantera

“Dehumanizer” - Black Sabbath (with Dio of course)

  1. Metallica: No life til leather- the demo that started it all.

is this album really that good? I like the early 80’s Dio/Sabbath albums (Turn up the night is one of the best tracks ever), but I have never listened to this album.

Wow dude, this is heard. Let me think on this. For me it has to encompass NWOBHM, thrash, death, and black. Wow, tough one. It definitely has to be in the areas of 1975-1985 somewhere.

Helmet…Meantime

start to finish perfect

Black Sabbath, Paranoid.

I think this was a great choice. By 1992, metal had completely pussified and gone rotten (it smelled like the pooty from “TheBodyGuards’” club story.

Even Metallica started down the dark path of commercial radio friendly songs (and entered a decade of commercial fuckism). Vulgar Display came out that year, too.

It was Black Sabbath saying “Hey boys, sit down and LISTEN … THIS is how it’s done.”

Ok, this was hard as hell. I’ve had numerous favorite albums over the years from the time I was about 14 and first got into metal until now that I pretty much refuse to listen to new bands. But I would have to say that the album (actually I have it on CD) that I have spun the most over my years on this planet is…

Among the Living- Anthrax

Epitome of metal? Wow, what an inquiry.

Racks brain

I’m honestly probably going to have to go with None So Vile - by Cryptopsy. It’s probably the single most chaotic, complex, savage, and memorable metal albums I’ve ever heard.

I’m not saying this is a tie, but I’d also put Opeth’s Still Life and Cannibal Corpse’s Tomb of the Mutilated very close to the top.

In no particular order…

Cowboys from Hell - Pantera
Vulgar Display of Power - Pantera
The Great Southern Trendkill - Pantera

I couldn’t pick just one. All I know is Pantera = all that is metal.
