is this album really that good? I like the early 80’s Dio/Sabbath albums (Turn up the night is one of the best tracks ever), but I have never listened to this album.

I think this was a great choice. By 1992, metal had completely pussified and gone rotten (it smelled like the pooty from “TheBodyGuards’” club story.
Even Metallica started down the dark path of commercial radio friendly songs (and entered a decade of commercial fuckism). Vulgar Display came out that year, too.
It was Black Sabbath saying “Hey boys, sit down and LISTEN … THIS is how it’s done.”

Well said, SD!
OK, here we go. I’ve spent about 2 hrs on this, no joke. I’ve come to this list by way of my own taste and personal thoughts, as well as some research on wikipedia to see the legacy/consensus on some albums.
^ Huge influence on Exodus, Metallica, Sodom, etc.
^ Just listen to Rapid Fire. IMO there was still a lot of hard rock/bluesy types sounds in a lot of the previous ‘heavy metal’ albums of other bands. This album changed that.
^ It’s influence on the early thrash bands… Slayer, Kreator, Metallica, etc, is undeniable. This is straight heavy metal, nothing else.
^ Black Sabbath set it all up. They already had sounds of doom, sludge, stoner, as well as straight heavy metal, but in this album, it is said that it contains some of the first thrash riffs ever. This gets first because of how early it was (1975, wow!).

Lol, so I just listened to all 3 through again. It wasn’t easy, hell it took me hours to decide, but I came to a decision. IMO Cowboys from Hell has some the most god damn metal vocals ever put down, but at the end I came to Vulgar Display.
Vulgar Display of Power - Pantera

LOL. You’re a product of that damned HEAVY METAL!
Reign In Blood - Slayer
Kill 'Em All - Metallica
Cowboys from Hell - Pantera (like Phil said, they are the fucking kings of metal)
Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath (Pantera might be the kings, but Iommi and Ozzy are Zeus and Hades)
Of course, Martians being devoid of a keen sense of irony and all, we could send them away with something like:
Man, 100 (mars) years from now when they’re sitting around looking at each other with some kind of shit-ass music playing that was derived from #1 and they finally get the joke, they’re going to be PISSED!! (and they’re thin atmosphere will be depleted from their environmentally unfriendly use of martian hairspray).

All 3 of those songs are awesome and I love them.

I don’t think he was saying they’re bad. They’re just not “The Metal” per se. He was also sort of commenting how they’re the predecessor to a lot of garbage music today I think. At least that was how I read the post…
#1 is Ride the Lightning by Metallca
#2 is Vulgar Display of Power
#3 is Number of the Beast
Shit this is hard
3- Somewhere back in time by Iron Maiden -greatest hits album of the 80s albums, not sure if it counts by it encompasses so many good albums it rates up there.
2 Metallica Black album- Fuck you I still think it is one of the best Metallica albums out there, just nothing after it.
1- Black Sabbath by Black Sabbath- this album is the reason we have metal, need to share that love.
Simple.
Deep Purple - Made In Japan
Best. Album. Ever.
We must build a Martian Heavy Metal Defense Shield.
See what happens when Heavy Metal gets into the wrong hands?

I fully agree. Then, before he’s buried, we’ll need to cut off his hands and destroy them so he won’t be annoying to anyone in the afterlife.
Number of the Beast, Maiden
Vulgar Display of Power, Pantera
Black Sabbath, Black Sabbath
That “manualist” made me spit my breakfast - that was some funny shit!
