The late 70s/early 80s is the golden era for me. In saying that, the movie that wet my lips for the genre was Fist of Legend, which was made in the 90s?
Was a big fan of Sammo Hung movies. The right blend of bonecrunching violence with a sprinkling of woeful comedy. Always good to watch a guy that size, move with the grace of a Russian ballerina.[/quote]
sammo and jackie chan both were raised by a chinese opera master. sammo about three years older than chan used to beat the crap out of the smaller younger jackie chan.
look for this biography “i am jackie chan” at your library. it’s a very good read.

There was a TV show featuring Sammo back in the 90s I think. Lots of PR at the time about his history with Jackie, and it really sounded like it was going to do well. Didn’t last too long if I recall correctly. (I don’t really remember a lot about the series)
Saw it and tossed it right in the bin labeled “modern shit that somehow can’t compete with classics even they have more money, bigger crew, more time”.
It’s really unusual for kungfu movies to be even decent these days.
It seems like the consistently try to overachieve.
On the plus side, the Wuxia genre, which I would keep seperate in a serious nerdiscussion has it even worse:
CGI complety ruined it.
Also Ang Lee.
If you are a questing chinese hero with a sword these days, I bet the house you suck.
-S.
p.s. “Legend of the Black Scorpion” was nice, though a bit on the romantic and artsy side for most T-men.
I was a mad Jackie Chan fan. My favourite Jackie Chan eastern is Snake & Crane Arts of Shaolin, btw.
Unfortunately, he’s become a [chinese] conservative figurehead, badmouthing democracy everytime I read about him.
So I try to pirate his movies now whenever I can.

Ah yes, Martial Law…best remembered for being bold enough to use the three grand cliches of TV :
Generic title? Check!
Main character has the same first name as the the lead actor? Check!
Main character has an implausable surname that turns what was a generic title into a witty play on words? Check!
Sammo Hung IS Sammo Law IN …MARTIAL LAW…(he’s a cop. Who does martial arts)
For ultimate silliness combined with fighting, it’s hard to beat Kung Fu Hustle. I love that movie. Its silliness is quite intentional though, as opposed to some of those older films.

Like 10x in theaters! That was one of the defining films of my brother and my childhoods. I may be opening myself up to all sorts of crap, but I’ve actually got the soundtrack on my Iphone.

i’m sure he doesn’t want to end up like bruce lee. it has to be a fine line to walk with family in china.
john barry is a master in his own realm…movie soundtracks. he did 007 movies and my favorite bruce lee score.
i do my last sets of bench work to this same music on my head phones:
…the only reason chuck norris is still alive is because he knows bruce lee waits for him in the next world.

That was great! I checked out the Kickstarter fund and found it’d closed a few days ago. They didn’t reach the $1 million target needed to make a full feature, but there’s enough to make a half-hour version which the director plans to stream online for free.

Great stuff. I’m sure plenty of people are positively affected by music solely because of the visuals they conjure. I’ve always been a big fan of movie soundtracks, and have plenty of them that even though they seem a bit laughable now, speak to the inner, younger me who was so influenced by the fictional characters and heroes he read about and watched growing up. I’m sure this could be a thread unto itself, but your mentioning John Barry got me thinking. I used to love the theme from Fists of Fury when Bruce is fighting the ‘Big Boss’ at the end. Just the kind of images a teenage martial arts nut needs to have swirling through his head at all times.
I actually have a few tracks on my gym playlist that must get me amped solely because they were used in certain bodybuilding youtube videos that I’ve found inspirational. I say this because when I’ve played just the audio tracks for either of my brothers or training buddies, they always look at me with a “are you serious? This kinda sucks dude” expression -lol

that’s funny. and the stuff they’re listening to probably would keep you from being able to focus.

Sadly, the Kung Fury trailer will probably be funnier than anything they would actually come up with.
See the yawnish “Iron Sky”.

Director David Sandberg already has the movie in the can. He just needed the additional money to complete the FX work.
