Lower Back Soreness

I have some soreness in my lower back and I wanted to ask a few questions. The soreness isn’t terrible. I’m able to move and run around. But it’s more soreness than I’ve ever had from weight lifting before and I’ve had it for about 5 or 6 days. I can’t tell if it’s from just recently incorporating deadlifts into my workouts or from trying to correct my posture.

Regarding the deadlifts, I try to maintain correct form (not arching the back) but I don’t workout in front of a mirror. I guess it’s possible I am arching my back without realizing it. Regarding posture, I’ve learned that I don’t keep my shoulders or hips back far enough or my abs tight enough when I stand or walk around. So, I’m trying to correct my posture.

Do you think the soreness is from deadlifts or from posture changes, or both? Should I not do deadlifts until my back feels better? Should I not lift any weights until my back feels better? The soreness is tolerable and not that bad. I just want to make sure my back isn’t vulnerable and I don’t hurt it really bad. Thanks for your help!

When I started deadlifting my lower back and hamstrings were tortured. It wasn’t a torn feeling, simply a feeling of really hiting muscles that I probably never hit before.

I reccommend the following. Unless the pain is to great keep up with your workouts, the pain will subside and will actually turn to pleasure. Maybe decrease the weight a little. Also,STRETCH!!!after deads. Attempt to touch the ground a few times stiff legged, and typical stretches for lower back and hamstrings. But, keep up the good work, let us know if anything changes. Good luck!!

from the deadlifts. those babies will hit that area hard, especially if you have not done them in a long time. they are awesome. laters pk

Thanks for the replies. I’m wondering if I started out at too high a weight. I started out at basically the heaviest weight that I could do five reps at and then I did five sets of five. I did that last Sunday and again this morning (Thurs). My lower back was sore throughout the week and definitely is more sore now after doing the lifts again this morning. Since I’ve never done this exercise, should I be starting out at a lower weight and building up more gradually? Thanks.

Wow; those are some really impressive pics you have there, PK. I can tell you’ve been lifting for many years!
