Lower Back Pain When Training Abs

Hey boys. It’s been a while since I posted and since then, I’ve had a little lay off formt he gum due mostly to being retardedly busy at work. But, I’m back, and need some help. BACKGROUND: I was getting a lot of back pain when driving to and from work for a while. ART and Stretching got rid of the back pain but I still get pain in my lower back when doing ab work. I have to stop doing abs before fatigue because of the back pain. It’s really frustrating because I know my abs need work and it seems that whatever I try, I just can’t get a good ab workout in without the pain. Any suggestions?

Big, we probably need a few more details in regards to the exercises that you are currently doing for you abs, and the sets/reps etc that 'bring on the pain’for you. My wife was a d-1 track athlete, and much to my surprise, she ran into the same thing that you have when training her abs. When I designed a workout protocol for her, part of the ab component involved leg lifts, which in turn really hurt her lower back. I have had my Chiropracter examine her and correct her sach, as well as some additional issues. But, most importantly, I had her begin high rep low weight, STRICT Romanian dead lifts and worked up the weights from there. I also had her begin reverse hyper work in order to build strength in her lower back and posterior chain. The issue is now gone. With the info that you’ve provided, that’s all I really have for you now dude. Try some swiss ball workouts, and explore your options. Either way, it sounds like you’ll need to go back to 1st base and build strength and capacity in your posterior chain. It sounds like you just have a muscle imbalance/weak lower back that needs some work. It’ll take some time, but It’ll be worth it for you to invest in. Don’t forget to hit the squats and deads!

Well, punch me in the nuts and call me a dumb-ass!!! I never thought of Dead’s to correct the problem. I most certainly will try that. Thanks for the input, I’ll drop an update in a while

Actually, I’ve always had back pain after doing hanging leg lifts (I’ve never tried them in the “chair” position). I think it has to do with the position of the pelvis at the starting point. Any way, my chiro has recommended against doing leg lifts for abs.
