Lower Back Injury or Just Soreness?

Hi folks,

my situation is like this; My lower back feels stiff and tired. When I hyperextend it, it kind of “hurts” NOT a sharp pain or anything like that, just like “flexing sore muscles” pain.

During the workout, I haven’t got any trouble with it. No pain or anything at all.

I’d say I do squats/deadlifts with go form. So did anyone experience anything similiar? If this is a sign of an upcoming injury, I’d try to avoid it of course.

Best

I have been dealing with a lower back injury for about 7 months. My advice is rest it for a week and see if there is improvement. If there is, probably just not fully recovering enough or a mobility/form issue. If it isn’t may be what you said, an injury coming up which also kinda ties in with the mobility/form issue. I’m no expert but just my 2 cents

In my own case there is a very fine line between working the lower back and it coming back stronger and overworking the lower back and it coming back injured.

I try and minimize the load to my lower back where possible… Doing things like relatively upright torso high bar back squats (or even front squats), replacing loaded rows with inverted rows etc.

Also working hard on abdominal activation (I learned I had lazy abs, I would ‘hang’ from my lower back muscles instead of properly bracing with my front muscles as well, so my back muscles really were taking a beating. Also working hard on gluteal activation (I learned my lower back was taking a bit of a beating with my deadlift lockout and I had to really work on finishing with my glutes without overextending at the knees).

In a way… It could well be that your lower back always will be your limiting factor. I’m never sure what to think when some people suggest more back work to strengthen it for these kinds of cases. I’ll admit I’ve never tried it…

Stretch the fucking fuck out of your hip flexors and glutes.
