Lower Back- Christmas Tree?

Cannot believe there is a thread here about Christmas trees without mention of Mr Christmas tree himself Samir Bannout.

holy shit that is freaky.

I think waist size is mostly genetic. I know im very luck to have a small waist, but I’ve been doing heavy deadlifts for 2 years and my waist has stayed the same. Lots of bodybuilders/powerlifters still incorporate deads into their routine and have very small waist.
Pretty impressive back there. Are your profile stats (Weight: 180-190lbs; Height: 5’ 10") still up to date?

That looks truly unreal… crazy looking back.

Holy fuck. That’s why I lift. I think it would be badass to look like that, nice job man.

What was your back work like, if you could pm me the exercises that you think contributed most to back growth?

Last time I weighed myself a few days ago I was 194. Im not as lean as I was in that pic, but Im not far off. Im currently trying to put on as much size as I can and then evaluate my progress in March/April-ish.

Yeah I’m gonna have to 2nd the notion of elusive telling us how he got that incredible lat size.

What does everyone like to do to get that christmas tree?
I just diet. Hardly ever do regular deads. Bent over rows and squats seem to hit the lower back just fine for me. I only get that xmas tree if my body fat is low.

Yeah, I think most people don’t realize the required low fat levels. DOing any decent sort of training regimen will develop your erectors to some degree.

I stopped doing DLs (came close to tearing my bicep) and now only do Hyperextensions for the lower back.

Let the flames begin.

Yeah, I have to agree. Without being very lean, theres not going to very much detail on your low back.

How did deadlifts almost tear your biceps ???

Your arms only attach the weight to you they have no other role to play …

I’ve actually heard of a few people that either strained or tore their bicep doing deads. I think it may have to do with hitching on the way up as the person hits their sticking point before the lock out.

I suspect if the triceps, brachialis, and biceps provided no force towards holding the ulna and radius up into the elbow joint, it would be pretty hard on the ligaments. Better to share the load with the tendons, I would think, via muscle tension.

Don’t know that for a fact, but I’ve assumed those muscles tensed fairly hard with heavy weights for that reason.

If I remember correctly from one of the stickies in the dogg pound over at IM, Dante said he switched to overhand grip DLs (which makes you lift lighter weights than with mixed grip) and a bit higher reps for the same reason (not tearing his biceps).

weak bicep tendons? i was wondering the same thing too.

Heavy Deads and squats made my back hyooggeeee…but Never got the christmas tree before due to carryin a lil bit of fat. Its the powerlifter in me saying no to leanness…also You can tear your biceps deading, It actually happened to my old PL coach. He said it was because of hitching and a bend in his elbow or some shit

watched a guy tear his bicep in the britain’s strongest man comp this year. he was struggling to get his last rep in the deadlift, about 300kg on the bar, and you could see his elbow come up a bit out of the locked position as he hitched… and the bicep kinda rippled and, you could see it split under the skin. pretty gruesome.

You gotta see the difference between doing deads as a powerlifter, an doing them as a bodybuilder. When I used to PL, I’d use a typical PL grip, one up, one down, which although I’d sometimes get a little strain in the bicep of the hand facing up, I always felt I could pull more weight. After a few back ‘incidents’ (read Injuries -lol), I switched to a typical both overhand grip, rationalizing that although I’d be using less weight, that was actually the goal, and I wanted to distribute the stress even across my body as I pushed for a higher rep count.

One slight form mistake when using mixed grip on heavy deadlifts and the bicep of the arm applying the underhand grip is often done for.
(bar catching on your pants, you leaning back too much so that more stress is on the bis, etcetcetc, also like someone mentioned above with the strongman incident… Goes for injury due to lacking diet/training too heavy too often=recovery prolems etc as well, not just direct form problems…)

There’s a “nice” vid of a tear during mixed-grip deads (0:34 onwards):

Rolled up nicely…
