The other day I was playing pickup bball and when I grabbed a rebound I fell and landed oddly on someones knee. After that, my back sort of felt a bit weird but there was no pain. The day after that(Sunday) when I picked up a case of water bottles; I bent down and tried to pick it up but all of a sudden there was a terrible pain in my lower back.
Since then, my very lower back been extremely painful. It hurts more when I sit and a bit less when I stand. I can’t even bend over at all without my back being painful. It is also hard to sleep because I cannot turn on my bed when I am laying down without pain.
Also, there is a weird sort of dull pain on the inner thigh a bit lower than the groin area of my right leg. It’s nothing extreme just a very dull pain that will occasionally turn into more painful “shooting pain”.
Before I go to the doctor I figure I would post on Tmuscle and see that people think
Thanks
Did you fall and land on somebody’s knee or did you come down with the rebound and land directly on the knee? What part of your body hit the knee? I’m just having a hard time picturing exactly how you fell and landed on the knee. Could you also be more specific on the pain location with your inner thigh? Marking a picture may help. Any bruising present?
Sounds like pulled groin. If you’re body is compensating, it will tighten the psoas and illacus causing some back tightness.
See a sports doctor, not an internist. Trust me, they don’t know shit.

Sorry about no being clear. What happened is I landed, fell backwards and my lowerback hit another person’s knee pretty hard (odd? yes).
A groin pull? maybe? The pain in the lowerback is MUCH more intense and the pain isn’t really near the groin its sort of on the inner thigh about half-way down the leg. It’s sort of a throbbing pain that can shoot up and get worse. Here is a pic hopefully it helps…

That’s one of your adductors. Rest it. After awhile, begin stretching it with dynamic stretches.
Adductor injuries are awful. Don’t train through this. Trust me.
It may just be an adductor strain like BackInAction said since the area circled includes the sartorius, gracilis and some of the distal portion of the adductor group, but it may be something more. The mechanism of injury doesn’t correlate to a strain, but you may have done something else and not realized it.
Where on your low back did you hit the person’s knee? Do you have any radiating or any other “shooting” pain other than your lower groin? Does it hurt more when you cough or bear down to take a shit? The reason I ask is because your L2-L3 dermatomes (area of sensation) track right over the medial (inner) thigh. This picture shows the dermatome patterns in the lower extremity (http://www.scribd.com/doc/7532858/Dermatomes-of-Lower-Limb). This may be due to just some inflammation around the area impinging the nerve root or inflammation to the nerve root itself. Worse case is that something is wrong with the spine itself or the disc at that specific nerve root. Again, this is all just going off of your symptoms (difficulty laying/rolling in bed, pain w/ sitting, and the shooting pain in your inner thigh) and the mechanism of your injury (direct contact to your low back). It may just be a muscular strain or even just a possible deep contusion or edema causing the swelling, but could be something more.
With your pain and symptoms, I would recommend going to see an orthopedic physician and just keep those points in mind. Best of luck and let us know how things go!
Thanks for the help so far guys. @Backinaction: obviously I am not training through it. Even if I wanted to, I can barely bend over the pain is so bad.
@Levelhead:
Sometimes when I am sitting, if I try to readjust my position and move there is a shooting pain in my back. Also YES it does hurt when I cough, and yeah I can’t bend over at all because the pain is so bad.
Tomorrow I am going to see a sports docotr and see what he says, hopefully he can tell me if its back or an adductor injury. Either way, its not looking too good…
If you have radiating pain into that inner thigh area, or anywhere into your leg, when you cough, you always worry about involvement of one of the spinal root nerves and a possibility of disc involvement or some other spinal issue.
Best of luck with it all. Let us know how things go.

Sounds good, let us know what they say. I’ll try to give any advice I can.
Well I went to a sports doctor and after a series of tests and stuff I have a “severely strained sartorius and adductor muscle”. He thinks this was probably unrelated to my fall playing basketball. He said I probably strained the muscles playing basketball and didn’t realize it. And when I tried to pick something up, I probably worsened it.
My back pain is due to my back and hip flexor muscles tightening up. This is due to my body basically trying to “compensate” as he put it. (BackInAction was right). I have a few stretches to help my back loosen up which should reduce back pain.
The doctor said I am to stop all physical activities and to limit extended periods of walking. I am to RICE for 10 days and then go back to see him at which point he will reassess me. He said he would then give me a series of stretching and strengthening exercises.
Have any of you experienced something like this? Any advice would be appreciated. thankfully he gave me some pain pills (nothing too strong) because the pain right now is just unbearable.
Glad to hear the good news forensic! This is a situation where I am glad to be wrong. Especially with your pain level where it is at, you definitely need to get that under control first and limit your inflammation. If the body senses excessive inflammation and pain, it will guard and can “shut down”/inhibit specific muscles, causing improper muscle activity/sequencing and poor biomechanics, which can impede your recovery and lead to further issues. Take your time with the recovery and progress as your body tolerates.
Yeah, the sports doctor said that with the symptoms I had it could have been a disc or nerve issue which, most probably would have been much worse. Lucky in my unluck I guess…

Glad to hear it’s nothing worse that that! Now is the time to rest and work on mobility. You don’t want these muscles to tighten up (as you’re already experiencing what this feels like). If you do nothing (mobility wise), it will just get worse.
Here are my suggestions for treating this:
-
Limit exercise to very light bodyweight movements only for a little while now. Nothing too strenous. Things like lunges and squats (working on perfect form) with just bodyweight will be excellent now. If you have muscle spasms with this though, wait till these go away and work on #2.
-
Mobility mobility mobility. Work on pelvic mobility and hip mobility. This will prevent scar adhesions as well as aid in healing. Plus this will keep your body from tightening up (like you’re experiencing now). From a standing position put your one foot on something in front of you about knee height. Put the other leg a little back behind you. Now with keeping an upright posture, move forwards and back, and then side to side. Try to feel it. Keep your pelvis pointed forwards as well.
-
Don’t do anything crazy right now. Don’t do anything like basketball, soccer, etc. Anything that involves cutting or jumping is bad (just for right now).
-
Let your body heal. This is where I screwed up. Doctors told me I was fine. I definitely wasn’t, but continued to train because I trusted them. That was a mistake. Listen to your body.

If this doesn’t get better, don’t let doctors suggest anything until you’ve tried to work through this with mobility, rest, and some exercise. I imagine if you do the above, you will be back to normal in a month or two. If you don’t get better, you will have to continue the above and I would also recommended seeing a manual therapy expert (Active Release expert). Make sure they are a good one. This should help after 2-3 weeks.

Stay positive. Since nothing is torn, be thankful. Just focus on healing now.
Good luck buddy!! If you have any other questions, shoot me a PM.
