Low/No carb grub

I know some/many of you use a low carb type of diet at one time or another. I was wondering if anyone has come up with some kind of way to kill the monotiny(sp?). I mean the same crap all the time is such a pain, and without carbs, it is tough to vary anything. I was wondering if anybody had any unusual or tasty ideas for low/no carb meals. Thanks.

I have to control carbs quite a bit, even while on a mass phase (I eat carbs on a mass phase of course, but the source of those carbs is still important) so I’m used to the boring diet.

The best thing I’ve ever done, and I’ve written about this a few times before and in Reader Mail, is to make puddings with Advanced Protein. Mix cottage cheese with AP an no water, chill, and eat. You can add natural peanut butter with chocolate then sprinkle with nuts and it tastes like a Dairy Queen Peanut Buster Parfait (yes, I come from a very small town!) A real treat and low carb to boot. I’ve noticed that low fat instead of fat-free cottage cheese has less carbs, at least in the brand I use.

And yes, I’m sure you can make this with other brands but I’m not guaranteeing the flavor! (My last “pudding” made with Met-rx low carb protein went to Bogart, my lab. And he wouldn’t eat it.)

Sugar free Jell-O and whipped cream is another zero carb treat and only about 20 or 30 calories. It’ll get you through a sweet craving. I eat a lot of omelets and use a variety of cheeses when low carbing as well. You may also want to look for the recipe articles by Steve Berardi at T-mag. He has some good ideas. And read “Foods that make you look good naked” if you haven’t already. May be a few ideas there.

I will throw some bacon bits into things like tuna and cottage cheese just to be able to crunch on something.

Chris, I too have to limit my carbs to keep my cholesterol in check. I eat a paleo style diet relying on loads of veg and a few pieces of fruit for my carbs. There’s no doubt that this type of eating dumps the fat quickly.
However, I’d like to know how you personally introduce carbs in a mass building phase.
Thanks,
Keith.

Thanks! I never even thought about something like the cottage cheese thingy. I will have to try that.
Bacos are a good, simple thing as well. never even crossed my mind to put em on anything except salads.
maybe i should get my head out of my butt and think on this sometime…
Thanks again!

Dairy Queen, huh? Oh, the HOURS I spent after little league games drooling over the counter girls. I think it was a requirement for employment that you be young and nubile. Those honeys are part of the reason I ended up a tubby little bastard in Junior High. Scrumdillyicious!

Keith- My main source of carbs in a bulking phase is old fashioned oatmeal. I also use Surge (I do that dieting too though) and eat a few pieces of fruit per week. If I’m truly on a mass phase and taking supportive androgens (Androsol etc) I’ll add a couple of pieces of bread per day, but only the dark, grainy kind. I usually add in an occasional sweet potato too.

roast beef & cheese or turkey & cheese roll ups in the microwave are a good snack

Those are some cool recipes, Chris, but let’s be crystal clear about one thing: Employing Dairy Queen as a culinary benchmark is not evidence that you’re from a small town. It’s evidence you’re from TEXAS! After all, DQ is “the Official Restaurant of the Republic of Texas.” (Well, it ought to be.) By the way, how do you know your first recipe tastes like a Dairy Queen Peanut Buster Parfait? Good memory or have you been cheating?8-0 (Sorry, but I’m a Sooner, and you know how hard it is to be humble when you’re a Sooner. So are you a Longhorn, Red Raider or what? I CAN’T WAIT to rub it in!)

newbie

PS–All kidding aside, I’ve greatly appreciated your dietary articles and posts, especially about logging. Well, time to visit DQ based on my diet guru’s advice; gotta do some…um…“experimenting” to find what works for me.

I’ve been meanin’ to ask off & on now for weeks: just where ‘bouts in Texas are ya from? --T-Rev, from the bustlin’ metropolis of Clute.

Newbie- Strictly a distant memory. These days if I want to blow the hell out of my diet I have black tie cheesecake at Olive Garden!

And I’m a Hardin-Simmons University Cowboy, yep, non-scholarship Christian football at its best! (cough, cough)

T-Rev: I live around the Abilene area. That means I get my butt to Dallas or San Antonio as often as possible because this area is pretty darn boring. Where is Clute?

Most Low fat products like cottage have less carbs than fat free products because when you take the fat out they replace iut with carbs and its usually sugar to make it taste better.

By the way, the cottage, chocolate protein and PB is a great snack!!

Clute is in the Brazosport area, near Freeport & Lake Jackson, on the coast; 40 miles down the coast from Galveston, about 50 miles SE of Houston. I grew up there, then lived Mission down in the Valley for about 6 years, Irving (Dallas suburb) for 12, & have been ex-patriate in the North ever since. You’re right about the Permian Basin bein’ kinda dull… so was Clute.

Thanks for the reply Chris.
