Low Carbing It, A Few Questions

  1. It must have calories to spike insulin??? I drink black coffee with some stevia in it everyday. Curious.

  2. I hit the gym every day except sunday, and post-whatever I did, I drink a protein shake that has carbs. I get about 20g from food a day, and 40g or so in my PWO. So about 60 per day, good or should I go less? My food carbs comes from an apple or other fruit in the morning with my eggs. My food carbs are ONLY in the morning, about 6:15am. Other than that, just trace amounts here and there in nuts or whathaveyou. I really would not like to ditch the fruit as the last time I went low carb I shit about thrice a week. Even with a shitload of broccoli and spinach and water in my diet.

  3. I don’t eat it, at all, ever, and publicly ridicule those that do, but does HFCS have calories? I think yes, and will google this upon posting this post.

  4. 12g of fish oil capsules, with your standard amounts of DHA/EPA in it, 3 times a day. Too much?

  5. I have acclimated to straight niacin and don’t flush anymore at all. Which sucks because oddly enough I loved the burn. I take 400mg twice a day. Is this too much?

  6. Powdered BCAAs. I have some and take 1 full teaspoon (5g or so) at breakfast, PWO, and before bed. Is this fine? Add more? It indeed tastes like shit.

My goal is solely leaning out and preserving/adding mass. I’m still a beginner so I fully expect both for a little bit at least.

6’2" 235, and 20% BF or more. (no where near abs) I can post my diet if need be.

Thanks in advance.

  1. Correct the coffee is not going to spike insulin… Also, add some cinnamon and a tbsp heavy cream. Cinnamon helps with insulin senstivity and the cream will slow the absorption of caffine (helping to not raise cortisol). This combo also tastes fantastic.

  2. I’d either go less to either under 30 g a day or I would bump up the carbs to a more moderate level. (how is your energy, if you feel like shit your probably not fat adapted?)

  3. yes

  4. no bump it up to 20 g if you can afford it.

5.? no idea

  1. It’s more important to get them while you are working out. so 20 g while your working out (more if you can afford it)
  1. I take 500mg niacin twice a day and my blood work liver panel tells me no problem. Check yours to make sure.

Curious. Would like to see references to these claims.

Not disputing it, just curious as to the ‘proof’.

Thanks.

It may just be the fat. Bought cinnamon and cream today. Cream has 5g fat, no protein (wtf), and no carbs.

And as far as claims with the health benefits of cinnamon, just google it. It’s legit.

If you are using Flameout you can take 1 Flameout for every 4 off-brand fish oil caplets.

Also, I’ve seen Thibs recommend liquid fish oil for those who are consuming a high volume of fish oil for insulin sensitivity.

do you have glutamine for your PWO meal?

diet sodas can spike insulin so you may need to watch that if you do drink them.

Almonds are a preferred nut but they do still have carbs so you should be checking the ratios.

Being dehydrated can make you feel hungry.

I’m about to make an order, so I’ll get some more Flameout. Glutamine is NOT in my PWO shake. should it be? I remember reading that. Lower the carbs and add glutamine?

I don’t drink diet sodas but I do drink a gallon of water. I eat mixed nuts, extra cashews and pistachios.

Off brand fishoil caplets are cheap enough (www.puritansale.com), but I will go ahead and bring the Flameout back in to the rotation since I have a steady paycheck now.

You should definitely check out some of the responses Thibs has made in his thread.

glutamine can replenish the glycogen in the muscles after a workout in place of carbs. I know some folks are also supplementing with glycine for the insulin response but I just can’t stomach that stuff.

Almonds are the only alkalizing nut so if you can get almonds, they might be the best ones for you.

It is a shame Bartl’s thread isn’t still up, he was low carbing.

are you fat adapted yet? If you aren’t, when you are feeling terrible, or hungry or wasted, first drink a lot of water, if you are still just trashed eat some fats. Laughing cow cheese are great.

Also, shredding a little parmesan cheese on your vegetables is a good way of slowing the absorption so you stay satiated longer and it tastes pretty good.

a shot of apple cider vinegar a day also assists with insulin sensitivity. Just be sure to rinse your mouth well afterwards to protect your teeth.

Flameout is out of stock.

Son of a bitch!

I “added it to cart”, hope they email me when it’s in.

Alrighty I’ll switch over to almonds. Not fat adapted yet, we’re on day 4 and I’m sitting about 50g carbs a day. I’m going to go lower starting tomorrow.

Biotest does not sell glutamine, what is the premier brand of it?

The last time I low carbed, about 5 months ago, I got constipated, felt like shit, but did get leaner. I’m hoping to persevere and up the veggie intake to avoid that.

I got my glutamine at Henry’s which is a whole foods store out here.

You can go to any Rite-Aid, or Thrifty, some kind of drugstore and get some psyllium husks. Take a serving of that a day for fiber supplmentation if needed. The husks will not add carbs to your diet as they are made of indigestible fiber.

Vitamin Shoppe carries ON glutamine.

I will look at that and the husks (WTF) when I go here in 15 minutes.

Thanks for you help.

What is niacin supposed to do?

Picked up psyllium husk capsules w/ Acidophilus and then some ON glutamine.

OG, you say 1 serving a day? Bottle says 1 or two capsules once or twice a day.

1 capsule is 880mg psyllium and 10mg acidophilus.

Got ON glutamine powder, 1000g. Serving is 5g and it says to take it with favorite beverage. What is the low-carbers protocol for glutamine? Link to “thibs”??

Biotest, you need to make glutamine.

Cardiovascular health

Ain’t gonna hurt, but it’s not something you’ll “feel” either. Could lower cholesterol too.

I take 20grams after, along with 10grams of creatine.

You can read the Thib Zone, or use the Search function and try Thibs Thib Zone and glutamine. I am not sure how many hits that will give you.

good job with your purchases!

I am sure you are going to do great with this.

and I agree, I wish Biotest made a glutamine.

One ounce (about 23 count) of roasted almonds contain only 1.5g of effective carbs!

Cinnamon is definately good, but if u r trying to lose fat, ill go easy on the heavy cream.

I’ll recommend to avoid diary altogether, They have a funny way of bringing up cravings and hunger.

instead try some non diary creamer e.g coffemate lite etc.

What is the purpose of using glutamine if it is converted to glucose anyway?

For instance, what is the difference between 20g of glutamine in a PWO drink as opposed to 20g of simple sugar carbs?

I know it’s been posted before, but I guess I’m still confused.

I get what you are saying about subtracting the indigestible fiber from the total carb count, but I really only do that for my green fibrous vegetables. That is the way Thibs recommends. Carbs are just soooooo sneaky!

There are 2 grams of carbs in a piece of chewing gum. That stuff is everwhere. He isn’t fat adapted yet so every gram of carbs is important.
