So you apparently listened to the “gurus” who told you that you had to bulk to gain muscle mass, now you’re asking for advice on how to get rid of the “bulk.”
Not only am I a firm believer in the notion that muscle hypertrophy is possible while maintaining leanness, or even while cutting, but I’ve proven it in my own life. Don’t let anyone convince you otherwise.
Don’t get fat, and you won’t have much to lose. Find a comfortable bf percentage, like 10%, and maintain it while putting of lean muscle. If you find that you’re gaining a little fat, just make adjustments to your diet, “cardio,” or both, accordingly.
Disclaimer:
1). I’m not talking about being in peak condition all of the time. By all means “cycle.” But set a comfortable high-limit bf percentage, and stay there. So, if you maintain 10% bf, you can cut to 6 or 8%, if you get the notion to.
2). Although, I KNOW that it is possible to gain muscle mass without packing on xtra fat, I CANNOT prove that you can’t pack on MORE MUSCLE MASS by bulking. I can only speak from my own personal experience. BUT I have found no appreciable difference. I have made incredible gains at 7-8% bf, and good gains, now, 20 years later, at around 10%bf.
Here is what Charles Poliquin says on the subject:
"Advantages to a low-carb approach: It promotes muscle gains while reducing fat stores.
I’m not a believer in the bulk-up/get lean approach in hypertrophy training. For 75% of the population, I strongly believe that if you want to gain lean body mass while losing fat, the low-carb approach will do it better than anything, especially if you’re taking supplements that enhance insulin sensitivity."
