Look Strong, Be Strong

Nice workout. That’s great that you PRed on your bench for the first time in . . . let’s just say a number of years. Really impressive. And great that it doesn’t hurt your shoulders.

well done on the bench PR - we can count it since it’s been like a century ago right?

The Dog is right, down south we refer to smack talk/teasing as “hate” and we respect those who do it well.

If I can get to 275 in a reasonable amount of time I’ll be pretty tickled. Even when I did bench, way back when, I didn’t know what I was doing. Hence the shoulder injury. I still need a lot of technique work.

Yeah I need to technique work as well, but I need it on all my lifts. You’ll hit 275 pretty soon I’d imagine.

Thanks for the kind words, git and N. Made me smile.

Bench is tricky on the shoulders. Great PR, but its a very good thing you are going about this smartly. And there will be no “ancient” jokes from me, you sweet young thang.

Very impressive dips. Interesting that you feel it in your biceps. Do you lean forward when dipping or it is more of a straight up and down?

Well aren’t you the sweetest.

A slight forward lean on the dips but nothing out of the ordinary. I had some nasty bicep tendonitis about 2 years ago (no biceps work for a year) and it still bothers me a bit. Since the tendon extends into the shoulder, there must be some pressure on it as I start the dip.

If I look forward in the 5/3/1 schedule, I won’t be repping 225 on bench for another 6 months. I’m impatient but I’m OK with a cautious approach so I can stay healthy.

Cycle 3, week 3
Squats

Trained in morning fueled by a bowl of Cheerios, 2 cups of coffee and frustration.
235 x 5
265 x 3
315 x 6…I felt as strong on these as 300 x 5 last week
275 x 5,5,5…quick and explosive
Felt strong. I pretty much felt like punching someone in the face the whole time I was there. Not that I would.

Leg curls…dead stop reps focusing on explosive eccentric
110 x 3
125 x 3
147.5 x 3…PR. Highest weight I have used on this machine.
125 x 10

Calf machine
20 reps rest paused

Forearms using cables
Supersetted 4 or 5 sets of wrist curls and reverse grip curls

Nice squatting. I had to wait for the squat rack this morning on account of quarter-squat-with-315 guy. I was duly unimpressed.

If your gym has a heavy punching bag, that might be just the ticket.

I full squat…promise

Funny you should mention the punching bag. My son was buggin me to put one in the home gym. I thought it was silly. I may rethink that.

Good benching and squatting!!! just keep going.
