Long-Time Lurker Saying Hello

Hello everyone,

I’ve been a lurker on T-Nation for the last few years and I figured it would be a good time for me to take a second to say hello. I suppose it would be good to finally have an account so that I can post on here. My name’s Kyle Keough, and I’m a raw powerlifter in the 148-lb. weight class; I live in Iowa City and am part of the University of Iowa Powerlifting team, along with a number of other lifters (the one you know as blackangus is a member of our team). I’ve been competing in powerlifting since 2009, when I did my first meet and managed to bomb out in spectacularly bad fashion.

Anyway, here is a video of the last meet I did, in late October of last year. My apologies in advance for not knowing how to embed youtube videos yet: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5k8OroEsBFo

Thanks for reading, and it’s good to be here.

Good to have you here Kyle. I’m a NASA lifter as well but am staying in the 132s for the time being. Great log you have at sherdog btw.

We’ve definitely spoken before–unless it was another NASA 132 from Texas.

Good job man.

serious question, is there any reason your stance is so close?

The honest answer is that it’s the stance I’m strongest with, and it’s what feels best for me. I didn’t start with this narrow of a stance; I made a video a while ago that tracks the changes in my squat over the last two years, and I started with a shoulder-width stance.

If you want a really long answer, I’ve also got a vlog on narrow-stance squatting, since this is a question I get pretty often. But the simple answer is that I’ve just narrowed my stance slowly over time and felt better each time I’ve gone narrower; this is the end-result.

1355 is a very good total for 148! Nice work!

Would be awesome if you learned to use video editing stuff though and put your attempts or good lifts into the video. I have no idea what breakdown your total was between the 3 lifts.

Thanks a lot! The attempts should be at 0:22 in the video. Sorry, I didn’t mark the individual lifts with text; my video editor likes to seize up on me when I overburden it with text. I would rather do something along the lines of what you’re talking about though, and I admit it makes watching harder.

At that meet, I did 501/298/556; since then, I’ve done 510/305/570 in training. So, things are coming along.

Got a link? I’d be very interested in seeing your log. That is a very narrow stance, but it is obviously working for you as those are some impressive numbers. I’d also be curious to see how your weights have progressed over the last few years. I’m just as impressed with your totals for your age as I am your weight.

Hey op that is interesting because I’ve been a lurker on T-Nation for the last few years and I figured it would be a good time for me to take a second to say hello. Well, I’m not that young anymore–I’m 26. And I’ll PM you a link, since I’m not sure if it’s good form to post links to other forums on here.

(Nevermind: I guess I can’t PM yet.)

Good home, black angus. You’re drunk.

Dude you are strong as shit. I need a new hobby.

Had a good laugh over this.

Seriously impressive lifting. Lots o’ talent.

Man, I know what you mean. I can’t eat pizza and stay up all night drinking all night without ballooning up and feeling like shit. I’m also getting more and more grey hair.

Great lifts!

lol, wasn’t your goal for next year to total 2000? I’d say that’s quite strong. And I could say the same thing when I watch Tony Conyers or Jaroslaw Olech. Or when Sergey Fedosienko destroys my totals from the weight class below me and makes it look effortless.

True–I suppose in powerlifting years, I’m still a baby. I’m on a team with a bunch of younger lifters though, so maybe I just feel old.

And thanks. There’s a little talent, but it’s mostly just borderline-unhealthy obsession getting me through.

I haven’t had a drink in years, and my diet is pretty controlled; but, if I were to do what you’re referring to here, I’d be a little fatty in no time. And I much prefer being a very good 148 over being a pretty good 181.
