Local boy deadlifts 1,000lbs

Hey gang, one of our homegrown boys here just deadlifted 1,000lbs. His name is Ken Brown. He is 38 years old. His lift during a strongman event, was the first 1,000lb deadlift in nearly 20 years. His first attempt was 750. Second attempt was 850. He then announced he would attempt to break the record of 965lbs held by Finland’s Jouko Ahola, the two-time World’s Strongest Man champion. He completed the lift and thought he broke the record. But upon return home from the North American Strongman Championships, he found out that Bill Kazmaier and Ernie Hackett deadlifted 1,055lbs at the World’s Strongest Man contest in 1982. The recognized powerlifting world record for the deadlift is 925.

Ken stands 6’ and weighs 290 and is considered small by strongman standards. Ken said the following, “I’ve done over 1,000lbs in training. I didn’t know about those two until I got back home. I wish I had gone for more, just to erase any doubts. I did have plenty more in me.”

He will attempt to qualify for the 2001 World’s Strongest Man contest at the American Hercules event July 7-8 in Kokomo, Ind.

On a personal note, I used to train at the gym he would work out at. This guy is a beast. Freindly, as long as he wasn't attempting a big lift, then get out of his way. No fat on him either. Just one solid piece of meat.

BS until I hear otherwise. Guys don’t break world records by 10% period. No way this was done in an official meet with weighed plates and international judges present. Sorry guy sounds like fantasy land.

The gym I train at spawns olympic class syncronised swimmers … time to find a new #@!$^&*@ gym.

IronDoc, they are legitimate lifts however it should be known that the barbells are placed on platforms.

It’s a partial deadlift. A great feat of strength , Gary frank has recently done partials in the 1000- 1150 range without straps. Deadlifts are a comp lift. Do it in a meet or it’s just an exhibiton. Gary Heisey pulled his 925 at a meet. You can’t compare a partial lift to a comp lift. Gary didn’t have the benfit of straps. It sounds like a great strngth feet, but you can’t compare it to a comp lift, period.

Ken did it , but it was a partial deadlift from 18 inches off the ground and straps were allowed…it is an official IFSA world record…IFSA was not around when Kaz competed and thus a new record has beeen set…I have competed with Ken for 2 years now and I am glad to hear that he is coming to Kokomo …we missed him last year!
The rest of you may also be interested …the show is on the 7th and 8th of JULY in Kokomo Indiana

Sorry you got your feeling hurt because you’re not intelligent enough to read even the sports section. Better stick to the comic section, at least there they have pictures of guys doing things you can understand. Like dogs licking their balls or something. Of course, you’ll probably say that it can’t be done. In Strongman competitions they lift a barbell with boxes on the ends loaded with iron plates. It used to be called the silver dollar deadlift, because they used to use real silver dollars. Do you know what silver dollars are? Or should I relate to the plastic toy coins you play tiddleywink with. Just because you didn’t see it, doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. Yeah, its bullshit, just like you.

Irondoc, you are really a child. First its all bullshit. Then you have to say it can’t compare. You are an asshole. I posted something that was meant to educate and motivate, you turned it into a negative. What, did your mom take a shit when she pumped you out and your still mad that she did that and didn’t have the self control? Gee, and I bet you’re this strong. Grow up. Coy, thanks for the nice post. I’ll tell Ken when I see him. And Irondoc, I’ll tell Ken your sentiments on his lifts. Where do you live? I’m sure he’d like to look you up. If not, his lifting partners will. Now, those guys are really crazy. I hope you have a good medical plan.

Whatever. While i’m sure he’s got more strength in his left gluteus than me or anyone else here has, I’ll be much more impressed when someone lifts 1000 pounds for real in a legit competition. The other day i lifted a couch that was full of change which weighed 1139 pounds. And last week at my job, I used a forklift to lift 3.5 tons. Where’s my medal?

Yes I know they’re called partials,I had a momentary neural deficit or something. The lift wasn’t legit by PL fed standards but was by IFSA as (Chad)? Coy mentioned and it should be mentioned that these guys do all sorts of odd strength feats with ungodly poundages all on the same day or weekend so many of these lifts are probably done with fatigue, all the more impressive.

Bodz-
Don’t be a jack-ass. Some guy said it was BS. That’s true. You said, and I quote, “one of our homegrown boys just deadlifted 1,000 pounds” If you look at the pictures, the bar was basically at the tops of his kneecaps. You did not mention at all that this was a partial lift, and made it sound like he had done something akin to Bob Beamon breaking the long jump record. Can he out-DL Ed Coan or Garry Franks from the floor? NO CHANCE, so it is your fault for playing the whole thing up like you did. Don’t attack people for calling out your misrepresentation. And, by the way, nobody is going to be qualifying for World’s Strongest Man based on some contest in Indiana, so those facts are not exactly accurate, either.

Bodz-I think what some of the people meant was that it is not a “true” deadlift since the silver dollar lift starts higher than a regular DL. Since that first few inches is the hardest, the two are not the same. My best regular dead is 520, but I have pulled 775 from about 3-4 inches below my knee. I’d never even break that off the ground in a normal deadlift. You won’t see Browns lift listed in Powerlifting USA, because it wasn’t a true, full range deadlift. Still though, that is a ton (half ton really!) of weight to move and is still impressive. I’m not taking anything away for him at all, I just wanted to clarify why it wouldn’t be considered a powerlifting record.

No I know what a deadlift is. That a powerlifting meet lift, not a strong man lift. To a competitive powerlifter, that’s how we look at it. Strong man lifts are great feats of strength, no doubt, but not competitive lifts in powerlifting. I’ve heard of a lot of guys claim lifts that you find out later are bogus. Fake plates, assisted, done by someone’s second cousin, etc.
Yes, I remember kaz and the strongest man silver dollar deadlifts. I’ve been in this game for along time. I’ve just seen a lot of BS in the day. Guys who have been in the meets think of deadlifts as the powerlifting lift, not a strong man lift. The have to be done under very exacting condtions to be compared. As for the ball licking, sounds like a personal problem you have experience with.
In case you want to know, I’m a former national powerliftin referee, competive lifter, with a doctorate level of education. I’ve treated ptofessional and high level athletes at world chapionships and in my office. I probably have one of the few offices in the country with a reverse hyper, glute ham, power rack, and a few thousand pounds of iron. Sorry your upset, I din’t mean to offend. I remember when Kaz was pulling Dls in the high eights. Your boy’s strong know doubt, but it is different than an IPF lift. still great, but different.

JASPER
Just so you know one of the qualifiers for worlds is in Kokomo, In. the otheris in Hawaii on the 2nd of June…
Why shouldn’t Indiana have the qualifier…corn fields are not exotic enough???hahahaha.
If Coloumbus Ohio is the best town for powerlifting…then Kokomo Indiana is the best place for strongman…the Americas strongest man …98 2nd place trained at my gym …the 1999 champ and the 2000 champ are my partners…and then we have several more top American International guys…4 of the top 15 are from my gym

I live about 8 miles from Kokomo, IN. I hope my schedule allows me to be at the competition on the 7th at least. It would be great to meet up with some of you T-men. Are any of you planning to be there? -LW

LW
I will be at the show…I am the promoter and a competitor.
Where do you train?

Hey coy, I may be all wet here, but I think you are the owner of the Powerhouse Gym in Kokomo! We’ve never met, but an out of shape uncle and a buddy of his had memberships there about 2 yrs. ago or so. I think I’ve heard of you through them. Remember any middle age, fat bald guys named Ron Graber or Dan Otto. Ron is my uncle. I’ve always trained at home, so I’ve been learning through trial error. I’m a young poor guy so far have’nt been able to afford a gym membership.
Rats, I just found out I’m expected to go with family to a reunion the weekend of the Competion. I only get the Sunday Tribune, will the time and place be in there? I’ve got my fingers crossed and hope to weasel out of the reunion, we’ll see… Later -LW

I do remember the two of them, but it has been some time!
If you need some help with your training let me know and I will help you!
Yes I am the owner or atleast I sleep with her…my wife…I think TC might even laugh at that one.
The show will be Saturday at Kautz Field from 10am til about 2pm…4 qualifying events…and the finals are Sunday at 2pm and we will be doing 6 more events…all the top Americans will be there plus 4x WORLDS STRONGEST MAN Magnus Ver Magnusson…and a few other international friends of mine…
This all happens about the same time as the opening of the new gym.

coy - American Hercules is going to be an automatic qualifier for WSM? Good for you guys, congrats… How many spots will the contest determine: 1, 2, or 3? I am aware of you referring to yourself and Neese and Schoonveld, but who is the fourth person you are talking about who is in the top 15 in the US? Anyway, good luck with your comp. when it goes off…

Coy-thanks for the schedule of events. I’d really love to go. It means alot when a big guy takes time to encourage us. Are you at the Powerhouse everyday? I’d really like to drop by & meet you personally. Just promise not to step on me, I’m on day 17 of the FF diet & I’m not a “whopper” lol… I was a VDB (very defined beanpole) @ 5’9" 135 app. 5%bf 4 yrs. ago, then I discovered I needed to eat to grow, Duh!! I started the FF @ 169.5 10.6%bf (7 spot) and at day 14 was 155.5 @ 8.3% hope to get to 7% by day 21, then try something like JMB’s Massive Eating. My workouts are limited to upper body since I broke a leg April 7 playing football. I’ve been feeling a bit sorry for myself lately, watching my leg shrink isn’t cool. I hope to be doing some lower body by July. A couple of my uncles (who eat like @#$%) have been telling me I’ll have a big gut & poor health like them by the time I’m 40. There’re all the motivation I need!! If you really don’t mind I’ll drop in sometime! Nuff ramblin…-LW
