Load For Waterbury Method

I am going to be moving into a waturbury method next and I’m hoping for some advice on how to set the starting weights…should they be set below what you can do so that the first week or two isn’t too tough but then you can DEFINITLEY increase each time?

For example, on the 4x6 exercises…if I start at my 6 rm it will be pretty hard to consistently increase, yet I hate the feelig of not going all out on a set.

Then 10x3 is tricky…he says to use 6 rm on it. That means that really you are no where near struggling on the last rep of any of the sets. Does it still work?

Thanks!

You have to rid yourself of the idea that you have to go to failure on every set to achieve success. On those 3 rep sets where it says to use your 6 rep max, focus on moving the load as fast as possible. On the 6 rep sets, first use a weight you can get 8-10 clean reps, and increase from there. See how you feel afterwards and adjust the weight as necessary the second week.

Yes, it works. On the 10x3, when you get to set 8, you are probably going to think the weight is a bit heavy. Chances are, you will struggle finishing set 9 and 10.

Also, if, as mentioned above, you are moving the weight quickly, it is going to be a bit more taxing.

Good luck with the program.
