Lipoma's

About a year ago I noticed a little lump on my side, a small rubbery little “lump” is really the only way to describe it. Needless to say I freaked out thinking it was cancer or something and I went and had it checked out. I was informed that it was a lipoma and it’s pretty much genetic. A lipoma is a build up of fat tissue into a little deposit. They never did a biopsy on me though.

Basically it is harmless and only needs to be removed if it becomes bothersome or painful. Since that time I have developed a few more and it’s really kind of annoying. I trained all through highschool and never got any of them, but for some reason I want to think that they might be related to my intense training and or rapid weight gain. They dont get any bigger, they are just kind of sore and tender if I fuck with them a lot. I have one on my leg, one on my right lat, one just below my left lat, and one on the right side of my abdomin.

Anyone else ever seen/had one of these?

~bump~

? nobody

I’ve had one in my upper left leg since highschool. If you push on it, it feels like a soft lump deep in the tissue. They’re harmless and I never even notice mine unless I overwork the muscle group around it. But yeah, you can get it taken out if it bothers you. Mine doesn’t.

I had a knot on my neck for a couple of years. When I had it looked at the doc said it might just be a lipoma or a subcutaneous cyst. Harmless either way. It actually grew until it was a little bigger than a marble. I never had any problem with it except it looked like I was going to grow a second head out of the side of my neck. When I got on salary and gained medical insurance, I had it removed. The surgery took maybe half an hour (I was out), and it only ended up costing me less than $100. Nothing to it, it wasn’t dangerous, but I’m glad it’s gone.

I think I have what you are talking about. I’ve had a cyst removed before, so I know that it is not a cyst. It is a lot like you described and on my left quad. Also, I didn’t notice it until I had become serious about lifting. I’d be interested in knowing more about this.

Got one a little smaller than a golf ball on my right biceps. For a few years, I actually thought it was a part of my biceps, a peak if you will.

It has no feeling, but I want the damn thing removed anyway, now that I have health insurance.

Cunnivore: May I ask what insurance you have and if they had any issues with your surgery being “medically necessary”? I have Blue Cross/Blue Shield.

We have a smaller group insurance plan , named Coresource through our employer. I never received any complaints about the ‘necessity’ of the surgery, they covered about 90% of the total bill. The doctor’s office called in advance and worked out the details as soon as I made the appointment. I got a small bill from the anesthesiologist and another from the surgeon. No problems whatsoever. Plus, my employer pays for the insurance completely. Bonus for me!

I’ve got one in my right upper arm & one in my left foot.
I’ve been told that it could have been caused by trauma to the particuilar spots, although I doubt it.

Good to know, thanks.

Who the hell told you that? Your instincts are correct; they are benign, fatty tumors and are largely due to genetics.

That sure is a jump to conclusions without SEEING IT. Traumatic lesions would also present as raised areas often with a more scaly presentation on the skin. His “instincts” may not be correct and he may simply need larger shoes.

I still think about getting a second look at these things. If it were cancer… boy that would suck.

I mean, I would have at least thought that a biopsy would have been done on them. Lipoma’s generally aren’t supposed to be painful. While mine aren’t “painful” per say, they aren’t pleasent. If I drive my finger into the lump, down into the tissue it does actually hurt a little bit.

Down, boy!

He logged on to a thread about a specific ailment and claimed to have the same thing.

Taking him on his word, I merely told him what these things are and are not. I made no attempt at diagnosing what he may/may not have.

If you think Killer7 has misrepresented himself, or you want a complete patient history, then take it up with him.

I have got it checked by a doctor; he told me it’s a lipoma. & does feel uncomfortable if I put pressure on it

Actually, that’s not the first time I’ve heard that. A friend of mine had one pop up on his back some time after a car wreck, and had it removed. It left a weird dent in his upper back, that eventually went away as the muscle resettled.

i had one on my inner thigh. i’m not sure how long it was there. my gf mentioned it one evening. apparantly it had been there for as long as we had been dating, but she didn’t want to say anything at first.

i had it removed. it didn’t hurt until i knew it was there and started poking at it. i just didn’t like the thought of a growth on my leg that shouldn’t be there.

my surgery was also quick, but painful. they numbed the area, but i could still feel the guy cutting at it. i think he had to tear a little too. it looked like some one working on a tough steak.

i was glad to have it out though.

I had the same thing happen to me on one tricep, one bicep, forearm, and I think maybe a couple more. I was eating big and working out like crazy and put on about 20 pounds in less than a year and then they showed up. I was doing a lot of very high weight lifts so I’m wondering if it was trauma induced. Either that or the result of putting on a lot of weight really fast, plus maybe a genetic predisposition or something.

From wikipedia “Lipoma”:

Cases have been reported where minor injuries are alleged to have triggered the growth of a lipoma, called “post-traumatic lipomas.”[16] However, the link between trauma and the development of lipomas is controversial.[17]

i had a couple since college. Man that must be like 15 or more years ago. I went to the infirmary at college and asked the doc. It was a free visit. Lipoma. He put a note in the chart about the size of it and said if it grows we’ll take care of it. Nothing ever happened with them except they are annoying. I think there’s one on my back and one on my lower chest around the rib cage area.
