Lifting with the Stricks

There is some fine work going on in the Little Strick Land!

If the doesn’t hit, you must not quit!

Tireed or not your umbes went up from teh week before, thats called progress.

Looks like the missus is taking to things swimmingly.

Math, it is just a new facet. We are having fun. And she is still griping at me about her not having any soreness from yesterday’s workout. We will have to work on that

It is moving along, Joe. And the wife is loving it. I can’t wait to see how far she takes it!

Well, today should be a good, and fun, workout for the wife.

This morning, as I am getting ready for work, she looks at me and says, “I am really looking forward to this evening.” Me, being a guy, assume that I promised some sort of sexual favor(s) or event. Uh…no, she was referring to the workout.

She is still griping about the lack of leg soreness. We are going to have fun with squats today.

And yes, I am planning to do light squats and deads. I think I will use 225# as my top sets. Nothing that is going to strain much, but will get me the movements under some degree of load. Fingers crossed…

Lower Body

Today marked my return to squats and deads, after a layoff of months and months. I kept the weights low (225#), but holy shit are my legs hurting! Better my legs than my back, though.

Squats

barx10
135x10
225x5x5

Deadlift

225x5x5

I will pay for this come tomorrow.

95x3
70x5x2

She wanted her legs wobbly and sore. She got it. We both had a hard time getting up the stairs to tuck the kids in.
She is still sorting out her foot placement, hand placement and overall form. Some reps she was too far forward. Some she was too far back. But I think we made good strides in finding the right groove. This will only get better.

Also, I noticed that she has an interesting imbalance. I noticed that she was, on the sets at 95#, twisting and shifting more of the emphasis onto her right leg. Something for us to work on.

Good thing was that I was done by the time she got to squats. So she had my undivided attention. This is really fun, for both of us.

Great to hear you’re back squatting and deadlifting.

And just to be on the safe side maybe you and your wife should squat on different days just so that each day at least one of you can walk!!!

The score is now 4-0 in favor of Lady Strick…I counted 4 PR’s for the Lady and none for the large beastly IT man!!

Go Lady, Go Lady !!!

Holy shit! My legs are killing me! Damn my back for convincing me to completely drop leg work for so long.
MP is going to be interesting…

Brett, that is a good idea. But she does legs every workout. Deads tonight. I am paying for mine. She is sore, but is already adjusting.

OG, she is definitely handing me my ass. That is okay. Whatever motivates her. Fortunately, for me, she is not overly competitive, or I might be in real trouble.

Shoulders

Was supposed to be arms too, but I ran out of time. Gotta get this sorted. Left shoulder is being a bitch. need to get that sorted too.

Bench
barx5
60x5
75x3 - bar path issues wasted a lot of gas
90x0 - bar path again
75x3 - gassed

Going back down in weight on bench. Too much form work to sort out.

Tricep pushdowns
45x8
45x2 - developed pain at top of scaps…called it there.

My legs loosened up for the millies. They hurt again now.

Mrs. Strick did GREAT on deads…slight form work needed. Bench needs lots of form work. Scaling back to get there.

How are you folks eating? Mrs Strick is going up pretty fast, are you working with her nutrition as well?

Cav, I am on a low carb diet. I have been slacking a bit over the last week, but it is still pretty low on simple carbs.

Pre-breakfast - (only on the day after a workout) small protein shake
Breakfast - eggs and bacon (mmmm…bacon)
mid morning - roasted peanuts
Lunch - MEAT, salad and maybe some rice

Non workout days
afternoon - protein bar
Supper - MEAT, veggies
before bed - protein bar

Workout days
afternoon - protein bar and small protein shake
Post workout - large protein shake (usually 1 scoop of Surge recovery and 1 scoop of regular protein powder)
Supper - (if time permits) Meat and a small veggie
before bed - protein bar and BCAAs

Protein shakes are made with skim milk. I can’t stomach them with water.
Friday night is cheat night - pizza and coke
Saturday is a low carb and low calorie day
Weigh-in on Sunday mornings - then a typical day with maybe an extra starch

Mrs. Strick…
She doesn’t really need any dietary help. She lost all that weight via the surgery route (RNY). She was too large to exercise. In fact, she would need a rest after walking up the stairs. After the surgery, her capacity for food was GREATLY diminished. She stuck to her diet like a pro and not only hit her target weight (150#), but blew past it by 20#, to hit ideal weight. Something that, apparently, is extremely rare for surgery folks.

The diminished capacity forced her to adopt a high protein diet. She gets 80-100g of protein a day. I have emphasized that she needs to try to stay closer to 100g. She eats little bread, no rice or pasta and does eat some veggies…but only because she is supposed to  Her only vice is the occasional sweet, but that is rare.

Her back seems to have gotten better. It was on both sides and is now only on the right. It is definitely muscular. She can’t take NSAIDs because of the surgery, but is using it as an excuse for hot baths and is using a heating pad. We will go light and work around it for a bit.

Be careful at the rate your wife is progression in a year she will putting you in your place.

Your wife is an amazing success story. I’m really interested in following her progress. Let her know we are all really pulling for her.

When you mention that she is having “bar path issues,” do you mean she is benching too high with elbows out?

Ah-ha, no wonder she’s doing so well. You folks are lucky to start out with a healthy diet. It took me many years to understand proper nutrition.

Bulldog, you may be right. At least it will give me a strong push!

Snap, thank you. And I pass all encouragement along. My hope is that she will eventually want her own log. For now, I will take her just lifting with me.
As for the bar path, elbows out was the initial issue. We got that out of the picture pretty quickly, though. What is happening now, but only with heavy weights, is that she is not consist with her bar path. One rep might come down exactly like it should. The next, she brings it down but it drifts too low. Other times it is too high. I think it is really just a matter of not having benched enough to really have a feel for what is happening. Most of us can feel pretty early in a rep when the path/setup is wrong. It will take time for her to get that. When the weight gets heavy, weaknesses/issues are magnified. No biggie, just something to work on.

Cav, in many ways her surgery was a blessing. Only a few pains. My diet didn’t clean up because of her, though. Mine cleaned up because it had to, if I plan on seeing my grandkids. And, the only way I could figure to maintain muscle and lose fat was the low carb route. We shall she.

Good stuff going on here! Way to go on the low carb. I hope it really works for you. Also, it’s great that your wife is getting in to the game.

Lookin good, Skip. Ya know, as much as we sometimes like to say it doesn’t matter, and when it comes to what unimportant people think of what we do and how we look it doesn’t, what does matter is how we feel about ourselves. What’s nice is that at our age, we finally have to smarts to care only about the ones closest to us and our health, not how we look to someone else. I started monitoring my food intake for alot of probably the same reasons as you. I was gaining fat, not weight, in the wrong areas…ie ‘organ’ fat, not subdermal fat. You know, the real unhealthy kind. Just by doing the little things, it’s starting to trend downward. Mostly lower carb. I’m generally under 180gms a day, which is ‘lower’ for me. Usually high fiber bread, potatoes and vegis with dinner and ice cream at nite (giving up my ice cream is the one thing that I’ve never done, ever). I don’t want to live forever, but being healthy and active and never on medication (I dislike how the medical profession operates right now) till I’m dead is a really nice goal. Keep up the good work.

Math, it is good times. Now, if I will just quit hurting her. Her right shoulder blade/back is still bothering her, though much better. We are going to do some light work today, working around it.

Rug, you are spot on. And congrats on your own success!
I understand the ice cream thing. That is why I still have my pizza and coke night.

Just checking in to see how the kittens, and Mrs. Strick, are doing. Not necessarily in that order, of course!!!

PG, I will get more pics up today or tomorrow.
Wife is doing well. Back still bothering her, but only when she moves her head forward.
She was able to get her workout in, with just slightly lighter weights. No pain.
