Lifting with the Stricks

Sorry Jennifer, didn’t notice the smiley on your comment.

So I went to the gym today, slapped on 85 lbs, and pressed 5 reps without problem. Thanks very much Jennifer, you’re very good motivation.

Sorry. I really apologize. Didn’t mean to offend.

I just meant that someone who’s been working out only a few months has reached the level of someone like me who’s been killing himself in the gym for decades. The humiliation is mine, not yours.[/quote]

No apology necessary! I was just teasing you. Good work on the presses!

Chest and Back…Squats for the Mrs.

We are back to a Sun., Tues., Thurs. schedule.

Jennifer’s Workout

Squats
barx8
75x5
100x3
120x1
140x1
155x1 - PR +5#
115x3 - stopped there sue to dizziness. Her iron is still low…way low.

Goblet Squats
45x10x4

Hip Thrusts/Bridges - whatever you call them
35x10x4

Strick’s Workout

Lat Pulls
115x15
175x10x2

supersetted with

Seated Rows
115x15
175x10x2

Bench
barx20
95x10
135x8
185x5
225x3
265x2
300x2
330x1
350x1 - Pinkies on rings
350x1 - Ring finger on rings
350x0 - Pinky 1/4" inside rings - this was just fatigue
** I feel the tightest with the last grip, but move the most weight with the first. Go figure.

Lat Pulls - Wide Neutral
220x10x3

Seated Rows - Close Neutral
220x10x3

That be it. I was disappointed in the bench. I expected to feel fresher, after three days off. This does seem to be he pattern, though.

Deads, bench and all the other

Jennifer’s Workout - I am trying to get her into the 3 to 5 rep range. She is all about strength, right now. So down with the reps and up with the weight.
Also, her iron levls are still playing hell. She is wiped after every set. But she is still in there plugging at it.

Bench
barx8
75x5
95x3
115x2
105x4x3

Seated Rows - close neutral
115x8x3

Lat Pulls - medium grip
91x8x3

Strick’s Workout - Still playing with Bolton’s dead program. I hit a 3RM, but over reached on the final set. I am, slowly, figuring out how my body does on deads.

Deads
135x5
225x5
315x5
365x3
405x2
440x1
465x3 - PR + 1 rep - much better than the 455x3 last week. I should have stopped here, but had a fourth rep in me. So, since I was going for 3RM, decided to add 10# and go for it. Dumbass move. I was fried.
475x1

Speed Deads
275x3x3

It appears that I am good for 3 to 4 reps, once I really start straining…at least on deads. This is good info. When I max, I need to lead up with singles, or I will burn out before I get there.

Say man, just saw on the news there is a huge wild fire in OK. Hope you guys aren’t in the way.

It is to the NE of us. So we should be okay. Right now, soreness is the biggest issue. So life is pretty damned good.

Great PR on the deads Strick.

Can’t imagine what you’d be capable of if it weren’t for the spondy.

Brett - I don’t know how much of a difference the spondy makes. On the obvious side of things, I have gone months without doing any lower body work, because of it. But even when I have gotten after it, I have been pretty much stagnant.
I think there is a degree of holding back, for fear that I am going to really aggravate it. By that I simply mean that I have the brakes on, during workouts. I never get over the bar , set myself and explode like my life depends on it.

It is hard to tell what condition the S1/L5 area is in. I know that my back hurts like hell if I stay on my feet for a few hours. Of course, that could be because I have a desk job and am not used to it. But it does seem to come from the area of the spondy. That would seem to imply that the diminished disc is not providing enough cushion. But I could be way off.

In any case, I still want that 600# DL. So, I will keep after it until I am forced to stop. I really don’t see how they are not going to have to fix it, surgically, at some point…but I am praying that is not the case.

I still want to know if fused vertebrae are strong enough to DL with. Anyone know?

StormtheBeach broke his back (don’t know the exact details) playing football I think, and he’s an 800 lb. deadlifter. He’s very knowledgeable and very helpful, my suggestion would be to see what his thoughts would be on your condition wrt deadlifting.

Thanks, PG. I searched for him and from what I gleaned, he never had surgery. I hope that is how it plays out for me.

Damn fine PR Big Man…and I like the thinking on working up using singles to save fuel…smart training for a young guy!!!

nice pressing and nice job pulling.

I want that 475 too dammit.

I have spinae biffida occula while its mild I think the bottom three vertabrae never hardened properly.
while Im pretty pain free it flares up a bit .

maybe you need some mild gear- like compression shorts or briefs or something
or even dare I say it a very loose single ply suit- straps down just to make you feel safe?
just putting it out there.

“Young guy”…yep, that’s me! Thanks, OG.

Kevin, that might not be a bad idea. I will check into that.

Dead Day - for Jennifer
Shoulders - for me

I know I said that I would stop bitching, moaning, groaning, griping and complaining so much. So I will. Suffice it to say, though, when simply raising your left arm, to wipe your brow with your forearm, sends sharp pain shooting through the socket…it was not a fun workout. Odd thing was, the laterals and rear delt raises didn’t cause any pain at all.

Jennifer got back up to 205#, on the deads. That is the weight that she hurt her back on. She was very cautious this go around. Cautious to almost being in slow motion. The confidence will return.

Jennifer’s Workout

Deads
135x8
155x5
175x3
195x3
205x3x3

Leg Ext.
55x10x4

Strick’s Workout

Face Pulls - for a quick warmup
91x15x2

Military Press
barx20
95x10
135x8
170x3
205x3
230x3
250x3

Z (Savickas) Presses - 1st time doing these. Damn, they are awkward and really hit the core.
185x3x3 - these got easier after the 1st set and got a feel for stabilizing

BB Shrugs
225x20
315x15
405x12
465x10 - power shrugs

Supersets of 1-arm DB laterals and 1-arm DB rear delt raises
Laterals
60x10
60x8x2

Rear Delt Raises
60x8x3

Time for a nap…

Umm . . . it is not complaining to point out that raising your causes sharp shooting pain. In fact, it’s alarming. Complaining is “I can only press 250 and that makes me a failure”.

Jennifer, great work on those deads.

Dead PR NOYCE!!!

And those millies man, just outstanding…do you use a false grip?

Glad y’all are gonna be ok. Good lifting by the strick family.

Thanks Cav. And you are correct. As for the pain, it is gone, now. It wasn’t there before I put it under load. It normally isn’t that bad. I will get it checked the next time I go see the doc about my spondy. This is a different doc than I went to for my shoulder last time.

Matty - thanks, big man. I do use a false grip. I have tried wrapping my thumb on both bench and MP, but it just doesn’t feel right. I know a lot of folks hate the false grip, but I think it more natural. My thumb is in the same alignment as it would be if I shoved someone or something.

Dday - thanks for keeping tabs on us. The fires are still to the NE. Although, there is now another to the SE. The closest one is over 15 miles aways and not moving in this direction. Poor firefighters…the OK wind is NOT their friend.

Regarding the fires . . . I used to live in Los Angeles. Oklahoma is mostly flat, but the mountains around the LA basin are just a firestorm feeding area. Fires climb up the hillsides like you wouldn’t believe. And when the Santa Ana winds kick in . . . better move away.

Any connection to the fires that swept Texas earlier this year?

(Hold on, I’ve driven through OK . . . it gets pretty hilly in places.)

Cav, I don’t think there is any connection between the fires, other then the really, really dry summer.
As for OK and hills, OK is a transition state. In the west of the state, it is prairie land. The middle of the state has trees, but they are fairly short, especially when compared to back home…in GA. The easterm portion of the state (central eastern and southeastern) are heavily wooded, hilly and pretty green. But the whole state does have some rolling hills, just not like the east…unless you consider the hills in SW OK, which they call “mountains”.
