Lifting with the Stricks

You moved to OK? Wow I’ve got some catching up to do. You are neighbors from a Texas standpoint.
Looking very strong in here Stricks.
I was having some bad shoulder pain before I took time off. Kept me up and night and was like a hot knife in the front socket during heavy workouts.

Hope we see some water from the sky soon.

Hey Cav - When I worked in Irvine I’d go to the top floor of my office building in Newport Beach and view fires sweeping up the hills. It was like the end of the world. Surreal.

Lol…yep. I moved to OK in June…of '97. GA will always be home, though…the foothills of the Appalachians, the beach, the swamp, tall trees, hot summers, so-so winters, the four seasons (Winter, Spring, Summer and Football). Not to mention, my brother and I are the only ramblers left (he is in IL…commie bastard). Everyone else…mom, dad, aunts, uncles and cousins…are all still there.

I would say “Go Dawgs”, but I was a cop in Athens and did my share of arresting the ball players. It is still hard to pull for the heathens.

The shoulder is a perpetual issue. I have taken time off before, and it got better. Once I started back, though, so did the discomfort. What I am feeling now, though, is different. Normally the pain is in the anterior delt…supposedly the bicep tendon. This new discomfort is in the joint and radiates out the top. It is only present during the workouts.

Great lifting Mr and Mrs S. Not bad for a middle aged married couple. Senior Olympics next?

Hey! We’re not that old! And, as I recall, someone just caught up to me on years…muahahahaha.

Happy belated, young man.

Back to 205 for Lady Strick!!! WIN!!! Nice deads!

I still think she can hit a 2x bw dead (270#), this year. She will have to get her confidence back, though. We are working on it.

Sunday’s Fun…
Jennifer - Shoulders
Strick - uh…yeah…bench, speed MP and back

Jennifer’s Workout

Military Press
barx8
55x3 - speed
45x3x4 - speed
65x5
75x3x4

Laterals
15x8x3

Rev. Flyes
15x8x3

Strick’s Workout

Lat Pulls
115x15
175x14
185x13
195x12
205x11
220x10

Speed Military Press - my first time doing these. Part of my “get to 300#” plan…
barx3
95x3
140x3x5

I find this video funny…only because the weight is 5# more than Jennifer weighs.

CGB - MP Grip
135x8
185x5
225x3
275x3
315x3x2
225x10

Seated Rows
220x10x2 - wide neutral grip
220x10x2 - close neutral grip

Lots of fatigue from this one. Felt great.

The speed MP is part of my plan to get to a 300# MP. I am going to include speed MPs on bench day and use a combination of Z Presses and MP on shoulder day. I am considering a couple of sessions with pin presses, from the nose/eyes area, thrown in. Will it work? I have no clue. But I need to do something.

Speed MPs huh…I might have to try these, makes sense for that burst of power you will need to go up to the big 300, and not so big 235 for me lol.

I hope it helps. I think the lighter weights will help me reinforce form and, hopefully, add even mor explosiveness off the bottom. Strangely enough, MP is the only movement where my explosiveness seems pretty good.

As for the 235# comment…that is a big weight. There is no one that I see, day to day, that could press 200# over their head. Forget 235#.
I understand the sentiment, though. We compare ourselves to the folks here…or the really strong ones at the gym, assuming we go to a gym. They are the exception, not the rule.

Besides, the 300# that I am chasing is little compared to the 300x3 that meat did. It’s all relative.

Truth spoken bro…

I’ve actually read a few articles where some high level Strongmen competitors have added dynamic work on there MPresses with good results.

Thanks, gents.

Bulldog, I hope it helps. I can’t see how it could hurt, unless it is a complete waste of time. I don’t think any lifting is a COMPLETE waste of time, though.

Deads, today… According to the program, this is a light or nothing day. So, poor Jennifer will get all of my attention. Squats for her.

This will be an interesting run, for me, on deads. I am on week 9, running down to 1. After this week, according to the Bolton plan, I will start with a couple of weeks of 5 reps at lower weights. It will, in theory, build up to a new max. I am just skeptical of running weeks on end at percentages so far below max. Maybe that is why I never progress!? I just have a fear that, if I don’t hit numbers, at least once every 2 weeks, that are at or above 90%, those weights will no longer feel manageable. We will see.

The speed MP’s make sense to me…people use them on deads and BP with success so why not MP’s…doesn’t everything come down to bar speed? I will be interested to read along. Now if you truly want a BIG MP I have heard that you have to do super high rep squats!!! Training is looking good Big Man…

OG, having read through your tortuous workouts, I guess I’ll have to settle for a so-so MP. Ain’t no way in hell I am doing 50 rep squats!

Squats and Deads…what a wonderful couple.

Jennifer did squats today and, in my opinion, had a damned fine day. I did my planned light day and threw in some shit for the hell of it.

Jennifer’s Workout

Squats
barx8
75x5
100x3
120x3
135x3x5 - these are bodyweight. Looking nice and strong and with great control on the way down and up.

Goblet Squats - She has graduated to a 50# DB. Not sure that she can hold much more.
50x10x4

She seems to be feeling a bit better. I think the new iron supplement may be helping.

My workout

BW Lunges
10/leg x 3

Rack Pulls - bottom pin
135x10
225x5
315x5

For the hell of it, I threw some pullups in. Mind you, I SUCK at pullups! The wonky wrist doesn’t help. But I won’t get better if I con’t start somewhere.
bwx1x4
bwx2
bwx1x2

All singles, except one double. Who knows, if I keep this up, they may be all doubles…by Christmas.

That is all.

Oh yes, poor me. It’s not like I demand you tell me what to do in there anyway.

I have absolutely no explosiveness on my squats. I really need to find a way to work on that. I could feel the difference when I did it on MP the other day.

[quote]MrsS wrote:

When you figure it out, lemme know. The only way I can be “explosive” when raw is to bounce off my calves. Otherwise, I’m better off super wide and very slow and controlled. When I throw the gear on, it’s a different story.

Good stuff in here stricky.

Even bouncing I don’t explode. I do get more speed and go up easier though. It’s how I got that last rep yesterday. But I’m much better than I used to be - I used to basically just drop doing squats. I’m much slower and more controlled now. Goblet squats have helped with that - I make sure to go super slow doing those.
