Lifting with the Stricks

Thanks, soldog. I really need to figure out technique for the transition area. I have the strength, but seem to need to readjust to actually utilize it.

Dude I cant see the vid at work, but holy hell, thats some great great OH pressing! KUDOS bro, Im in awe.

Good god thats fine pressing…

Amazing press and kudos for locking it out after that struggle. Those are some strong shoulders as that weight just flew up to the halfway point.

james

Breaking your PR straight off 5x5 is amazing. Imagine what you’ll be able to manage after a few weeks of triples, doulbles with the odd single thrown in.

Great job. There’s a lot of guys on here who would be happy to bench that!!

Thanks Matty, Joe. It felt good to hit a PR after all these months.

James, i hadn’t noticed that before. It does move rapidly to the 1/2 point. There is some sort of transition that i work through, at that point, when under heavy weight. It is like I am struggling to slightly reposition the angle of my upper arm, to get a better push at the top. I need to figure that out so that the transition is smooth. I think, If I can get that, I have a few more pounds in me.

Brett, funny you mention that. I have been contemplating 5 sets of 3 reps, working down to 3 sets of 3 reps. Still not decided yet.
I am also considering a deload, this week. Not an easy pill to swallow, though.

This is how I would plan to progress on my lifts as well. At much lighter weights of course!

Congrats on the PR. Rested, training differently (what FB said), I seriously think 300 is within your reach on one of those good days in the gym.

No worries, Bulldog. 20# is a long way to go. Especially at 5# every 6 damn months!

PG, now you’re just teasing. I read that and think, “maaaaybe”. But 20# is a lot on MP. Well, it is a lot on any lift. But MP just seems to move the slowest of the big 4.

I will say, though, if I can get the right technique tweak, to smooth out my rep in the transition area, and my body is primed for the workout AND if I get a perfect rep, I think 290# is within range.

I am very hopeful that the set/rep schemes you mentioned will help, given the heavier weights used. Of course, I tend to slip into strength lulls more easily, on MP, when going heavy for too long.

Funny thing is, I feel like my strength is down, every time I bench. You would think bench and MP would go down together!? Maybe I am in a lull and I will do 300# as soon as I get out of it. Yeah…and maybe I will be the next king of England.

You’re pretty much “selling out” every time you MP, so it’s not surprising your bench is stalled/lagging -only one master at a time. Personally, as I get to the heavier weight set/rep schemes, I plan to add a back-off set focusing on technique and the mind-muscle connection, to maintain overall volume.

And have you checked out this article? Some interesting ways to give yourself a break from the basics:

Thanks, PG. I especially liked the MP lockouts and the tricep variations. Definitely going to look into those.

Skip that is some huge pressing-
and thank you famed bret I would be happy to bench that.

fine work Mr. and Mrs.

No vid here but 280x1!!! Boy am I slackin. Nice work.

Damn nice pressing Strick. You’ll get that 300 soon.

Wow. 280. Just awesome.

Kevin, Rug, dday, Steve, thanks gents. At least it is moving in the right direction.

dday, thanks for stopping in.

Steve, we are still waiting on your video. But you have to let bulldog or me get to 290#.

Skip, don’t be disappointed but I may have lied about the 350. I’ve only pressed 250 and push pressed 265. You’re the MP king.

Perjury!

Steve, I have never seen anyone do a strict Mp with 350#. I have no doubt that there are paople who can do it, but I have never seen it…in person or on video.

And Meat is the MP king. I will have to settle of Duke.

It’s okay, Snap. No blood, no foul.

Bench

I’ve decided to slack off a bit on bench and keep my current slackery on deads, so that I can focus on MP and, hopefully, stave off the inevitable strength lull.
Also, headed out the door today, without eating, to spend 2 hours helping a friend partially disassemble a huge playscape and move it to his house. Shoulder got tweaky during it. Likely because they were trying to lean the big ass thing over, to lay it on its side, and I was the dumbass under it, trying to keep it from falling.

Anyway…

Bench
barx20
95x10
135x10
185x10
225x10
250x10
275x8 - ran out of gas and had no desire to gut it out.

Lat Pulls - wide neutral
100x12
160x10
210x10x3

Seated Rows - close neutral
210x10x3

Mrs. Strick’s very short workout

Squats
barx8
75x5
110x5x5

MP
barx8
74x3
80x0

We are trying to come up with a better workout scheme for her, since we keep running out of time.
Option 1: Break each ME out to it’s own day
Workout 3 days a week, but have 4 workouts to cycle through.
Sat. - Squats
Mon. - Bench
Wed. - Deads
Sat. - MP
rotate

Problem with this is finding enough accessory work after the ME.

Option 2:
Sat. - Bench with 3 sets of 5 reps on deads, as an assistance
Mon. - Squats
Wed. - MP with 3 sets of 5 reps on deads, as assistance
Other accesory work mixed in.

Thoughts?
